Please take a few minutes to submit your September time sheet (support staff) or time-off report (administrators) to your supervisor right away. As always, be sure it is complete, accurate and signed by both you and your supervisor before sending it to HR at Box 6108. (If your supervisor is not available to sign it, please send a copy to HR and keep the original until it has been signed.) The link on the HR website for these documents is georgefox.edu/offices/hr/forms.html.

A tip to help you remember to do this each month: Set a recurring appointment on your Outlook calendar for the first business day of each month with a brief notation, “Turn in time sheet.” That gives you one less thing to have to remember, allowing you to save your brain space for important stuff.

Student supervisors, please submit your students’ September time sheets to HR right away. Please be sure the student’s name is legible on each one and use the new cost center numbers. Also, don’t forget to sign the sheets, and be sure the students did as well. (If the student is not available to sign it this week, please send it without the signature and HR will hold the check until the time sheet is signed.) If a student delivers his or her own time sheet to HR, it must be in a sealed envelope — a Federal Work Study regulation.

If you happen to still have any paperwork to submit on a newly hired student, please send that in right away as well. It is necessary in order to pay students.

The Oct. 10 payroll will be the first payroll run in the new PeopleSoft system, so we anticipate it taking more time than usual. Receiving time sheets earlier than usual will be a big help.

Doug Campbell’s (Visual Arts) photo expressionism exhibit, “Second Street Parking,” is currently on display in the Murdock Learning Resource Center. The show runs through the month of October.

An administrative assistant II .75 FTE position (30 hours per week over 12 months) is currently open. The job is to provide administrative support to the dean and the director of the Doctor of Management program (currently Ken Armstrong and Craig Johnson, respectively) on the Newberg campus. This position is paid on Pay Range 4.

The Tilikum Center for Retreats and Outdoor Ministries welcomes Chris Steele to serve as retreat center director. He recently moved to Oregon from Tulsa, Okla., where he was an account manager for Camp BackPack, a camp management software company. Before that, he spent four years at Camp Lebanon in Upsala, Minn., where he was a guest ministries coordinator. He also was a retreat manager, guest relations manager and guest services coordinator at the Pine Cove Christian Camps in Tyler, Texas, for seven years. Chris earned a bachelor’s degree in history from the University of Texas at Tyler in 1994. He lives in Newberg with wife Amy, son Jack and daughter Olivia.

Shelley Yonemura joined student life to serve as interim director of multicultural services. She has worked as an English Language Institute co-curriculum programs assistant at Oregon State University the past two years, and in 2006-07 she was a study abroad advisor and graduate teaching assistant for OSU’s international education program. She also worked for two years at Linfield College as a community service coordinator from 2004 to 2006. Shelley attended Oregon State’s master’s program for college student services administration, specializing in spirituality and counseling. She earned a bachelor’s degree in elementary education from George Fox in 2000. Shelley lives in Newberg.

Daniel Brunner (Seminary) was named a GreenFaith Fellow in September and will join the 2008 class of the GreenFaith Fellowship Program. The program is the first comprehensive education and training program in the country to prepare lay and ordained leaders from interfaith religious traditions for religiously based environmental leadership.

Debbie Cash (Financial Affairs) is the university’s first “Employee of the Month” recipient. Debbie was honored for her work with the PeopleSoft implementation. Winners of the award are honored with a reserved parking space.

Al Zimmerman (Planned Giving) was presented the 2008 Distinguished Service Award by the Northwest Planned Giving Roundtable during its annual Planned Giving Conference Sept. 23. He was honored for his demonstrated leadership and service to the public and the planned giving community, and in recognition of his mentoring members of the profession of planned giving.

Jim Steele (Management) conducted a concurrent workshop, “Change Resistance: Turning a Liability into an Asset,” at the Northwest Human Resource Management Association’s 70th annual conference and tradeshow in Kennewick, Wash., Sept. 16-18.

Ginny Birky’s (Education) research on high school reform, Spotlight on Success: What’s Working in Oregon High Schools?, was recently posted on the Oregon Department of Education website. The 10 documents highlight successful models and practices in Oregon high schools that are in the midst of change and innovation. The documents include an introduction to the project, scholarly summary of the research, and stories of what’s working in eight high schools.

Matt Meyer (Cinema and Media Communication) made two presentations in August at the University Film and Video Association conference in Colorado Springs, Colo. Matt presented “Your Students’ Films Sound Awful: Top Ten Ways to Improve Film Sound” and “Teaching Film Techniques to the Video Generation.” He also is editing and mixing sound for the feature film Magic Man this term.

Ed Higgins’ (Writing/Literature) poem “Daylight Savings” was published in a recent issue of the Christian literary journal relief (vol. 2, issue 3), a publication that features fiction, poetry and creative nonfiction pieces. Ed also had a tanka piece, “the big bang ever,” published in the August issue of scifakuest, an online literary quarterly.

Bruce Strom (School of Professional Studies) wrote a column, “Your small business is now profitable; what next?,” for the Sept. 23 issue of the Idaho Press-Tribune.

Andrew S. Miller, a student in the Master of Arts in Spiritual Formation program, believes that “beauty is important, especially to those who love God.” Come and enjoy the beauty he has found through his camera lens. His photographic art will be displayed through October at the Portland Center Library.

Bon Appetit is issuing an “Eat Local Challenge” on Tuesday, Sept. 30. To commemorate the event, lunch in the Klages Dining Room will feature ingredients from within a 150-mile radius of Newberg. This act, while seemingly simple, has far-reaching implications.

For starters, food grown locally is fresher and more flavorful than food that is harvested early so it can be transported great distances. Tuesday’s greens will come from Mustard Seed Farms, the beef from The Dalles, the vegetables from throughout Yamhill County, and the mushrooms from the coastal range. This Friday, Oct. 3, an art exhibit by Mary Saunders will open in Brougher Studio 3 at 4 p.m. The series of self-portraits, titled “How Am I Not Myself?,” will be on display all month, so if you can’t make it to the opening, stop by later. Refreshments will be served at Friday’s opening.
