Over the past couple days we’ve seen a couple of cute dogs being walked or carried by their owners in the Bruin Den. Although we love dogs, please be aware that unless they are certified guide/service dogs, they are not allowed to be there or in any food service dining area per Oregon state food safety policies. This includes even the cute little ones that can be carried in purses. Thanks so much for understanding.

Angela L. Milner began at the Portland Center as a student financial services specialist. For the past two years, she was an executive assistant to the head of school, office manager and bookkeeper at Pacific Northwest Academy in Wilsonville. Before that, she was an account administrator for Acordia Northwest in Seattle for two and a half years. Angela earned a bachelor’s degree in theatre from Oklahoma Baptist University in 1999. She lives in Newberg with her husband Jonathan and attends Imago Dei Community in Portland.

Nikki Martin resigned her administrative assistant position in Salem in September.

Gary Tiffin (EDFL) has moved from adjunct to half-time associate professor in the School of Education.


Alene Horney accepted the position she was temping in – as an administrative assistant for the School of Professional Studies at the Portland Center. She replaces Eileen Newman, who is now a library assistant at the Portland Center.

Janeen Dillow is now a library assistant II in the Murdock Learning Resource Center.

Bruce Strom (School of Professional Studies) wrote a column, “Some tips for weathering this economic storm,” for the Oct. 8 issue of the Idaho Press-Tribune.

Kevin T. Jones (Communication Arts) published “The Persuasive Function of the Visual Ideograph: The Case of Baby Samuel” in Visual Impact: The Power of Visual Persuasion, a new book published by Hampton Press. The chapter explores the role of an iconic photograph in shaping cultural ideology. In particular, Jones’ chapter examines the photograph taken of a fetus in utero during surgery and how right-to-life proponents have used the photograph to promote their agenda. Former George Fox professor Michael Graves contributed a chapter to the book as well.

Reid Kisling (Registrar) had a book chapter, “Character and Spiritual Formation,” published in Foundations of Spiritual Formation: A Community Approach to Becoming like Christ (Kregel Publications). His hope is that the text can be used as a spiritual formation textbook for college and seminary students.

Interested in being a staff adviser for winter serve? We need faculty and staff to lead our trips Jan. 4-10, 2009. This year, teams of students will serve at Twin Rocks, Seattle, Portland and possibly in the Newberg area. Each trip needs a faculty adviser. The theme for the year is “People Matter.”

We also are organizing a prayer team of people who will pray for these trips both before and during their week of service. At your booth you may choose to share your culture through music, dance, videos, pictures, crafts, games, and, of course, the all-time favorite, food. We can reimburse you up to $30 for expenses with receipts. So come join the fun!

The University Store is hosting a “bored room” sale this Thursday through Saturday, Oct. 16-18. Store hours are 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. Thursday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday, and 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday. Come check out the great savings on current product we’re “bored” with so we can make room for new merchandise.

Employees interested in learning more about long-term insurance are invited to the university’s final long-term care insurance meeting from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 15, in Room 280 at the Portland Center. Spouses and/or other family members are welcome to attend as well. Sub sandwiches will be available at the meeting.

The Health and Counseling Center will host a walk-in flu shot clinic from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 15, in the Health and Counseling Center.

The Orbis Cascade Alliance, in conjunction with Online Computer Library Center, is finalizing work on the new Summit catalog. Summit is the catalog for ordering books and media from other academic libraries in Washington and Oregon. With one search, this new catalog will allow you to discover materials from all over the world. One search will soon allow you access to both the Summit and WorldCat catalogs.

The new catalog will be available to use beginning Dec. 1. Some inconveniences and disruptions in Summit features and functions may be part of the transition. The library is working hard to bring you better searching and discovery tools and will appreciate your patience while we work on implementing the new Summit system.
