Getry Agizah, program coordinator for Friends in Peace and Community Development, and David Zarembka, coordinator of the African Great Lakes Initiative Project of the Friends Peace Teams, will share about their experience in peacemaking in Kenya. Both of them live and work in western Kenya

Bring your lunch (or not) to hear about responding to violent conflict in Kenya after this year’s presidential elections.

Multicultural Services invites the campus community to take part in Cultural Celebration Week beginning Monday, Oct. 27. On that day, a “Celebration of the Arts Chapel” begins at 10:30 a.m. with singing, music and special performances by the Concert Choir and University Players. Lunch in the Bruin Den will feature Asian cuisine.

Monday night at 7 p.m., the film Grandma Zula’s Legacy will be shown in EHS 102. Watch the Portland documentary and interact directly with the film’s creator, Julianne Johnson (sponsored by ADVANCE Leadership). Please note: This is a time and date change from the original schedule.

Residence Life, in partnership with ASC, is hosting a mock election starting Monday, Oct. 27, to raise awareness and promote dialogue about the candidates. A voting booth will be open in the Bruin Den Oct. 27-31 from 11:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Stop by to learn more about the event and cast your mock presidential vote. You can also cast your web ballot online.

Polls will close Oct. 31 at 5 p.m. and results will be compiled in an Electoral College style, then announced to the campus starting Nov. 3. Don’t forget to cast your official vote by Nov. 4.

A faculty teaching forum, “FoxTALE 1.9: Upgrade and Grade Book Changes,” will be presented from 3:40 to 4:30 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 29, in the Hoover 211 computer lab.

FoxTALE will be upgraded to version 1.9 between the fall and spring semesters. Come to this session for a peek at the new features and especially the new grade book. The grade book has been completely rewritten in version 1.9, and you’ll want to know how to prepare for spring semester, especially if you use a complex grading scheme with weighted categories. Leading the discussion will be presenters Russ DeVore, Gloria Doherty and Sheila Abercrombie (IT).

The session is open to all faculty; however, it will be geared toward those who are already using the grade book. A separate Portland Center session will be scheduled in November. IT will provide additional training sessions in January; however, if you use a more complex grade book, you are encouraged to attend now so that you can prepare.

Due to high demand from participants, TIAA-CREF’s two newest, very timely, and highly successful seminars — “Staying on Track in a Volatile Market” and “A History of Strength and Stability” — are now available on its website as a web seminar. The first seminar addresses the historical returns and inherent volatility of stocks as well as the importance of asset allocation. The second seminar provides information on the financial strength of TIAA-CREF.
