The Department of Performing Arts is presenting another Students in Recital.  Come support our music students as they present what they have been working on this year. This month’s session is scheduled Friday, Nov. 14 from 12:40 to 1:30 p.m. in Bauman Auditorium.

If you’re planning to teach English abroad or in a community program, don’t miss this opportunity to learn the basics. Take COMM 350 Introduction to Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL).

Offered in Spring 2009. Scheduled Monday and Wednesday, 3:40-4:55 p.m.  The next time it will be offered is Spring 2011.
COMM 350 Introduction to TESOL can be taken on its own or as part of the TESOL Minor.

The Department of Performing Arts presents the Chehalem Symphony Orchestra in concert on Wednesday, Nov. 19 at 7:30 p.m. in Bauman Auditorium. Admission is free.  The concert will feature selections from Verdi, Schubert, Mendelssonn and Otto Nicolai.  The orchestra, comprised of students and members of the community, will be presenting their first concert with new director, Mr. Ben Brooks.  Please come support them and enjoy a night of classics.

The GFU Admissions Department is hiring an intern for the upcoming spring semester.  Applications are available in the Admissions Office, located on the second floor of Stevens.

For the months of November and December the Portland Center Library is pleased to present the art work of Kathleen Jones.

 

Kathleen says:

 

“Throughout my life, I’ve been attracted to art in its many forms.  I’ve worked with stained glass, mosaic, pottery, interior/landscape design, drawing, floral design, costume/set design, and even floats.  Although I enjoyed each of these mediums and still pursue most of them, I sought for an expression which was my own.  

 

Seven years ago, I enrolled in a painting class at George Fox.  Prior to this class, my painting was limited to murals and objects until I decided to experiment with oils.  The first brushstroke on the canvas was instant love; in that moment, I knew I’d found the media I was searching for. 

 

Ever since then, I paint nearly everyday.  I love the feel of oil on canvas and the way the paint moves and blends.  Oils can be soft without a noticeable brushstroke or dramatic with harsh strokes.  I love this versatility of expression which they provide.

 

My love for nature and the experiences of hiking in the woods of Oregon and Glacier National Park provide the inspiration for these pieces.  The wonder of such landscapes is difficult to express either in words on paper or with paint on a canvas.  Time after time, the sight of an unexpected vista surprises and fills me with a sense of the goodness of God and the goodness of the world around me.  In these moments, I come to understand more deeply that we are created to love and respond to beauty. 

 

I strive for a feeling of peace in my paintings.”

A Faculty Teaching Forum, “What Would You Want From a Center for Teaching and Learning?,” will be presented by Rick Muthiah (Center for Teaching and Learning) from 3:40 to 4:30 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 13, in Hoover 104 (Hoover Library).

This session will be a discussion about the role of a Center for Teaching and Learning as part of the larger endeavor of faculty development. Is faculty development in general, and discussion about teaching in particular, an important component of your life at George Fox? What would help you develop as a teacher? What conversations about teaching do you wish you could be part of? How do you think educational technology supports or detracts from your teaching? Bring your thoughts for this roundtable discussion.

Refreshments will be served. No R.S.V.P. is required. All faculty — full time, part time and adjunct — are invited to attend Faculty Teaching Forums (FTFs).

Mandee Spotts returned to George Fox to work as an undergraduate admissions counselor. She graduated from the university in April with a bachelor’s degree in psychology. Over the summer, she worked as an intern at the Murdock Charitable Trust organization. She also has worked as a teacher and coach for Northwest Basketball Camps for the past six years and, from 2005 to 2008, was employed in George Fox’s fitness center. Mandee lives in Aloha with three other recent college grads and attends Solid Rock in Beaverton.

Becky Jensen transitioned from temporary status to full time as an administrative assistant in the School of Management. She had worked in the office since May. Before that, she was women’s ministry director for Grace Baptist Church in Newberg for four years. She also served as business manager of Windmill Nursery of Sherwood from 1989 to 2002. Becky earned a bachelor’s degree in biblical literature from Multnomah Bible College in 1986. She lives in Newberg with her husband, David, and sons Nathanael, Zachary and Nicholas. She attends Northside Community Church.

Bedford Holmes (Tilikum) will be leaving George Fox at the end of the year to serve as executive director of Zephyr Point Presbyterian Conference Center in Lake Tahoe, Nevada, effective Jan. 1. Bedford has worked at Tilikum for eight and a half years.

Paul Otto (History) presented “Beads of Power: Wampum and Ritual Transfers on the Early American Frontier” at the Conference on Ritual Dynamics and the Science of Ritual at Heidelberg University in Heidelberg, Germany, on Oct. 1. Paul also was quoted in a Nov. 4 Oregonian article, “The Middle-Class Muddle,” in which he provided insight into early-America’s class system.

Blair Cash (Athletics) was inducted into the Belhaven College Sports Hall of Fame in ceremonies in Jackson, Miss., Oct. 24. Blair was honored for being the school’s first sports information director. He was SID and athletic teams manager as a student (1971-76), then became the first full-time SID at the school in 1976-77.

Ed Higgins (Writing/Literature) recently served as one of three jurors for the Christian Scholar’s Review’s annual Charles Miller Award for best essay. Ed’s pick for the best 2008 essay turned out to be the selection that will be announced in a forthcoming issue of CSR. For the past several years, Ed has been George Fox’s representative to the CSR Editorial Board, and this marks the second time he has been a juror for the annual best essay award.

It’s that time of the year once again: The university’s baseball team is selling oranges. A 20-pound box of sweet California oranges is $22 ($10 is tax deductible). Come to the Lindy Hop Swing Dance Workshop hosted by the GFU Swing Club and taught by guest instructor, McLeod Larson, a GFU alumni who teaches swing in Sacramento. 

The class will be held in Wheeler 211 on Saturday, November 15 and will consist of two sessions:
1:00 -1:30 p.m. – Lindy Hop Basics
1:30 -4:00 p.m. - Lindy Hop Technique and Connection

Cost is $10 for the first session or $15 dollars for both sessions.

The university’s BlueZone group is hosting the first Letterman Jacket Month in December. Bring your letterman jacket back after Thanksgiving break and wear it until Christmas break. All students, employees and pets are encouraged to participate. A large group photo will be taken in the quad at 3:30 p.m. Dec. 2.

Once a year, the George Fox Symphonic Band invites a guest ensemble to perform with them at a fall concert. This year, the Newberg Community Band will be joining the band in a concert at 7:30 p.m. Monday, Nov. 17, in Bauman Auditorium. Please join the music department in supporting our students and community members. Admission is free.

The Crescent is looking to hire one well organized, self-motivated, business savvy individual as our Business Manager.

Manager would be responsible for all business and managerial aspects of the Crescent office; including coordinating all ad sales, ad design, billing, and the general operations.

The seniors in the Liberal Arts and Critical Issues group will be presenting their research on Islam on Monday, Nov. 24. We are looking for 30 people to help judge these exhibits. Each judge will have four to five projects to examine. This should take approximately one hour, and no experience is necessary. We hope to have administrators, faculty and staff participate. The all-employee meeting originally scheduled for Thursday, Nov. 20, has been moved to 4 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 18, in Hoover 105. Please make a note of this scheduling change. The meeting will provide employees with an opportunity to receive campus updates. Your attendance is strongly encouraged.
