Taylor Martin, a 2008 graduate of George Fox, has returned to the university to work as an undergraduate admissions counselor. Since earning bachelor’s degrees in both psychology and Christian ministries in the spring, he served as the activities coordinator for the Rose Schnitzer Manor at Cedar Sinai Park from May until August. He also gained experience as an activities and social events worker as an intern at Friendsview Retirement Manor from December of 2007 until April of 2008. Taylor lives in Beaverton with wife Kaleigha, who also graduated from George Fox in the spring. The couple attends Northside Community Church in Newberg.

Al Zimmerman (Planned Giving) is leaving the university in December to serve as executive director of the Portland-based Northwest Christian Community Foundation, a conduit for generating gifts in support of a wide range of Christian ministries. Al has worked at George Fox for three years.

Sara Vulgan is now a graduate admissions counselor for the seminary. She was formerly an administrative assistant serving various programs at the Portland Center.

Ron Arnold now has a part-time contract with the MAT program in Boise after serving as an adjunct instructor.

Gary Fawver will serve as interim executive director of Tilikum until a new executive director is hired. This marks a return to Tilikum for Gary, who served as director from its founding in 1971 until 1990. A former professor at George Fox, he also served as a member of Tilikum’s long-range planning committee in 2003 and on the task force that developed a new site plan in 2007. Bedford Holmes is leaving Tilikum at the end of the calendar year to serve as executive director of Zephyr Point Presbyterian Conference Center in Lake Tahoe, Nevada, effective Jan. 1.

Lori DeKruyf and Keith Dempsey (Counseling) presented at the Western Association for Counselor Education and Supervision 2008 Conference in Palm Springs, Calif., Nov. 6-9. Keith co-presented “Multicultural and Advocacy Dimensions Model” with Manivong Ratts of Seattle University. Lori’s presentation was titled “Screening Potential School Counseling Field Placements: Practical Tools for Structuring and Evaluating Visits, and Connecting with and Equipping Site Supervisors.”

Sylvette Norre (French) was quoted in an article on continuous learning and professional development for foreign language faculty in a recent issue of The Language Educator, a journal of the American Council for the Teaching of Foreign Language. Sylvette makes reference to the Cavilam program in Vichy, France, which focuses on working with the common European language assessment tools.

Tim Rahschulte and Craig Johnson (Management) attended the International Leadership Association Conference in Los Angeles Nov. 12-15. Craig presented “Trust and the Practice of Ethical Leadership,” and Tim presented “Facilitating Leadership: A Discussion on Effective Educational Tools and Tactics that Develop 21st Century Leaders.”

Paul Otto (History) has been named to the editorial board of the new Journal of Early American History, published by Brill Academic Publishers.

Kerry Irish recently published an article entitled “Cross-Cultural Leadership: Dwight D. Eisenhower,” which appeared in a new edited work, The Art of Command: Military Leadership from George Washington to Colin Powell.

The application deadline is 10 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 9. George Fox’s Multicultural Services will award $2,500 in scholarships to current students who show leadership potential and want to actively engage in racial reconciliation on campus.

According the organizers, the annual conference convenes with the purpose of “glorifying God by empowering students to better face the challenges existing on their campuses, in their communities, and in society at large through multi-ethnic awareness and engaging in the active process of racial reconciliation.”

The event focuses on the needs of students from diverse ethnic backgrounds who currently attend Christian colleges and universities. Students have the opportunity to meet one another, fellowship, dialogue and pray together for a weekend. You can read more at the SCORR website.

WRIT 103A is a one or two credit course designed to meet a student’s individual writing needs. It is a personal Writer’s Studio where students work, one-on-one, with professors and tutors to complete individualized goals in grammar and mechanics, reading, composition, and research skills – skills necessary for effective college learning.

It is graded Pass/No Pass.

The Murdock Learning Resource Center will close at 5 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 26, for the Thanksgiving holiday. The MLRC will reopen on Sunday, Nov. 30, with hours from 6 to 10 p.m.

Join the Department of Performing Arts for the last Students in Recital presentation of 2008. Come see what this semester’s music students have prepared from 12:40 to 1:30 p.m. Friday, Dec. 5, in Bauman Auditorium.

The university has been working on implementing a new registrar/billing software system for spring semester 2009, and we need your help.

First, please register for spring 2009 courses in Bruindata by 5 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 4. If you have already registered and plan on making changes, please complete those as well. This will help prevent registration delays during the transition.

Secondly, read your e-mails from the enrollment services, registrar and student financial (billing) offices regarding changes. The e-mails will be short with critical information you will need. We appreciate your help and will continue to keep you informed using e-mail and e-nnouncements.

Enjoy some holiday cheer.  You are to celebrate this special time of year at the Snowflake Swing Dance Sunday, December 14 from 8:00 p.m. to 11:00 p.m. at the Arcadian Ballroom in Portland.

The Department of Performing Arts will present its Christmas concert, “O Holy Night!,” Friday through Sunday, Dec. 12-14. The concert features more than 175 musicians from five ensembles in the main-stage performance, and preconcert music featuring six of the university’s chamber ensembles.

Friday, Dec. 12, 7:30 p.m. (preconcert music begins at 6:30 p.m.)
Saturday, Dec. 13, 7:30 p.m. (preconcert music begins at 6:30 p.m.)

Ticket information
All faculty, staff and students receive one free ticket that can be picked up at the box office in the University Store. Additional tickets may be purchased in person at the box office or by calling the office at ext. 3844. Tickets also are available at music.georgefox.edu. Tickets are $10 for adults; $8 for seniors and George Fox alumni; and $6 for students and children.  The concert features reserve seating, so if you have a favorite seat, make sure you save it now.

The Portland Center will operate on holiday hours this Thanksgiving week. The buildings will close at 5 p.m. on Wednesday and will re-open on Monday, Dec. 1, at 8 a.m. Have a Happy Thanksgiving!

You are  invited to attend the artist talk and opening reception for the “Shift” art exhibit featuring paintings by Biola University’s Dan Callis. The artist talk begins at 4 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 25, in Hoover 102, followed by the opening reception in Minthorne Gallery from 5 to 6:30 p.m.

Just a reminder from the university’s Safety Committee: Be careful out there. On-the-job injury accidents have skyrocketed this year. Three lost-time or restricted work duty accidents within a week have pushed the total number of injuries this year above last year’s total.

An accident is easily avoided if you are attentive and cautious when walking on wet floors or just about anywhere outdoors, especially this time of year. And be careful to always use proper bending and lifting techniques. You can find more good information about preventing slips, trips and falls at this site.

Be safe at work and at home. Take care to carve your turkey, not your thumb, and have a happy Thanksgiving.
