A reminder as you are registering for spring 2009: If you are planning to teach English abroad or in a community program, don’t miss this opportunity to learn the basics. Take COMM 350 Introduction to Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL).

The course will be offered in spring 2009, scheduled Mondays and Wednesdays from 3:40 to 4:55 p.m. The next time it will be offered is spring of 2011. COMM 350 Introduction to TESOL can be taken on its own or as part of the TESOL minor.

The Department of Performing Arts will present its Christmas concert, “O Holy Night!,” Friday through Sunday, Dec. 12-14. The concert features more than 175 musicians from five ensembles in the main-stage performance, and preconcert music featuring six of the university’s chamber ensembles.

Three presentations are scheduled:

Two on-campus performances in Bauman Auditorium
Friday, Dec. 12, 7:30 p.m. (preconcert music begins at 6:30 p.m.)
Saturday, Dec. 13, 7:30 p.m. (preconcert music begins at 6:30 p.m.)

Off-campus performance at Village Baptist Church in Beaverton
Sunday, Dec. 14, 2:30 p.m. (preconcert music begins at 2 p.m.)

Ticket information
All faculty, staff and students receive one free ticket that can be picked up at the box office in the University Store. Additional tickets may be purchased in person at the box office or by calling the office at ext. 3844. Tickets also are available at music.georgefox.edu. Tickets are $10 for adults; $8 for seniors and George Fox alumni; and $6 for students and children.  The concert features reserve seating, so if you have a favorite seat, make sure you save it now.

Reminder that the Department of Performing Arts is presenting its last Students in Recital of 2008 this week!

Come support this semester’s music students as they perform their current repertoire on Friday, Dec. 5 from 12:40 to 1:30 p.m. in Bauman Auditorium.

During the past 4-6 weeks we have had over 1000 glasses, coffee cups, bowls, deli baskets and silverware disappear from the dining room. Because of that, we’ve had to spend almost $2000 to replace those items and we’re still not able to keep up with what is being taken out of the dining room and not being returned.

We would greatly appreciate everyone who has any of these items in their rooms or apartments to please bring them back as soon as possible so that we don’t have to continue to buy new ones.

Also, please remember that the meal plan is not designed to take food out of the dining room. By helping to keep costs down it will benefit everyone. Thanks so much for your help…

As of Wednesday, Dec. 3, there are 4 more chapel credits available to students.

If you are officially participating in a ‘small group’ be sure your leader submits your names. Credit for small groups and winter serve will be applied during finals week.

If you know that you are NOT going to complete your spiritual formation requirement you can check out the student life handbook and see what you need to do to fulfill your requirement.

On Friday, Dec. 12, students who are deficient will receive an e-mail from Jere Witherspoon. You will be instructed as to what needs to be done to complete your spiritual formation requirement.

There are a few days left to participate in the Urban Services “All I Want for Christmas” drive. Help us bless our homeless friends by donating a mug and/or small gift items like toothpaste, mints, shoelaces, lotion, jewelry, etc.

There are drop-off sites in LeShana, Coffin, HMS, Edwards, Pennington, and the Bruin Den. We officially end Friday, Dec. 5, but you can pick up items over the weekend and drop them by the Christian Services Office in the SUB.

This is a Critical notice regarding the registration/billing software transition for spring semester 09.  Please take a moment to read the information.

Impact:

• Fall 08 – Final grade entry will be in Bruindata – No Change
• Students are receiving emails/ennouncements asking them to register for Spring 09 by Thursday, Dec 4, at 5 p.m. to reduce manual work in late December and early January.
• Registration enrollment records will be converted into PeopleSoft beginning Dec 4 at 5 p.m. in preparation for Dec 8 go-live date.
• Students will continue using the Bruindata Registration for spring 09 after the new system is live on Dec 8. These records will then be entered manually in the new software by the Registrar’s office.

Please encourage students to register as requested; this will greatly assist the Registrar’s and Billing offices to start springs semester in the new software.

On Friday, Dec. 5, the courier to the George Fox Portland Center will not leave Newberg until after 1 p.m. All items for Portland must be received at the University Mail Services by 12:45 p.m.

The regular schedule will resume on Monday.

It’s time again for the Library’s Annual Wassail Party! Please take a break on “Dead Day” and join us.

Murdock Learning Resouce Center is hosting the Wassail Party for students and employees on Monday, Dec. 15, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the multi-purpose room in the Library. Christmas goodies, wassail and coffee will be served.

For those not familiar, wassail is a warm spiced-cider drink.

Spring textbooks will be available online on Monday, December 15th.

Books will be available for purchase at this time.

We Need Your Help!

George Fox has been working on implementing a new Registrar/Billing software system for Spring Semester 2009, and we need your help.

1. Register for Spring 09 courses in Bruindata by Thursday, Dec. 4 at 5 p.m. If you have already registered and plan on making changes, please complete those as well. This will help prevent registration delays in during the transition.

2. Read your emails from the Enrollment Services, Registrar’s and Student Financials (billing) offices regarding changes. The e-mails will be short with CRITICAL information you will need.

We appreciate your help and will continue to keep you informed using email and e-nnouncements.

All undergraduate students who are currently freshman, sophomores or juniors are invited to apply for the SCORR Conference, a student congress on racial reconciliation scheduled Feb. 27-28, 2009, at Biola University in La Mirada, Calif.

The application deadline is 10 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 9. George Fox’s Multicultural Services will award $2,500 in scholarships to current students who show leadership potential and want to actively engage in racial reconciliation on campus.

According the organizers, the annual conference convenes with the purpose of glorifying God by empowering students to better face the challenges existing on their campuses, in their communities, and in society at large through multi-ethnic awareness and engaging in the active process of racial reconciliation.

The event focuses on the needs of students from diverse ethnic backgrounds who currently attend Christian colleges and universities. Students have the opportunity to meet one another, fellowship, dialogue and pray together for a weekend. You can read more at the SCORR website.
