Starting January 2009 the tracking of chapel attendance and other events on the Spiritual Life calendar will be facilitated through the office of Spiritual Life.

For all students who have a ’spiritual formation requirement’ (chapel requirement) starting in January 2009 you will contact the office of Spiritual Life if you have any questions about your chapel attendance or possible exemptions. The office of spiritual life will also monitor any deficiencies at the end of the semester. HOWEVER, the rules that are currently in the handbook will still apply.

For the FALL 2008 semester, chapel credits will continue to be monitored by Jere Witherspoon in the Student Life office.

If you are deficient in your spiritual formation credits in the fall you will need to reconcile them with Jere in the Student Life Office.

The University’s food service company will continue to offer hot meals for students from 5 to 7 p.m. on Monday through Thursdays beginning Monday, Jan. 12.

Meals are offered to our students at a subsidized rate. There is a hot menu option as well as “grab-and-go” items such as wraps and salads.

We are pleased to announce on Monday, Jan. 12, two new vending machines will be installed in the student lounge on the 2nd floor of the south Portland Center building. The coffee will begin its availability on Monday, and the fresh food will be available effective Tuesday, Jan. 13. We will continue to offer the Pepsi and snack vending machines as well.

Coffee vending will feature a variety of coffees, from cappuccino to regular drip coffee.

The fresh food vending machine will have a wide variety of options including such items as: Cereal, breakfast burritos, veggie tray snacks, milk, juice, sandwiches, lunch and dinner options that can be warmed in the microwave. All fresh food is $3.50 or less.

The machines will only take cash or coin at this time. We do have an on-site ATM located in the student lounge area as well.  Unfortunately the ATM only dispenses $20 bills. We are working for a better solution for you.

Once again, it’s time to prepare and submit your reserves list for the upcoming semester. The reserves Web page and the following instructions will guide you through the process and alert you to possible copyright issues.

• You will need to fill out the Online Reserves Request Form.
• After you fill out and submit the online form, bring your materials (with your name attached) to the library circulation desk for processing. In order for a reserve item to be ready for the first weeks of class, requests must be submitted by Jan. 14. Please remember, the reserves process can take five to seven school days at the beginning of the semester, two to three days during less busy times. We receive hundreds of reserves requests every semester, which we process as quickly as possible. The sooner you turn them in, the sooner they will be available.

A few reminders:

• The MLRC Reserves collection is limited to material that is required reading or in extremely high demand.
• Please let Sarah Eggerichs (Library) know if your request is for a text that is late arriving in the bookstore; these requests receive top priority.
• Keep in mind that reference books are already library use-only and will not be placed on reserve.

Because flooding has closed several highways in the Pacific Northwest, some students may not be able to return to campus for the start of spring semester.

Students who are prevented from reaching campus should contact their professors to make arrangements for missed classes. If students need help contacting their professors they may contact the Academic Affairs Office at 503-554-2141 or by e-mail (kfleming@georgefox.edu).

Mileage reimbursement update: For miles driven on or after Jan. 1, 2009, the university will pay a mileage reimbursement rate of 55 cents per mile. The IRS lowered the rate due to the drop in fuel prices effective Jan. 1.

Avoid long lines for textbooks by ordering online now at www.store.georgefox.edu.  We’ll have your books ready to pick up when you come to campus. If a book is out of stock, simply order what is available, then check back later for the rest.  Books are arriving daily. Remember, every dollar spent at the Bruin Bookstore supports George Fox University.

In the interest of academic pursuit and scientific research, Wheeler Fitness Center access will be impacted on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays for the next 10 weeks.

Beginning Monday, Jan. 12, a senior research project will be conducted by health and human performance majors with the help of both student and faculty volunteers. Between 6:30 and 7:30 a.m. on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays, all cardio machines will be in use by project participants, with the exception of one elliptical machine, one treadmill, and a limited number of resistance equipment pieces. All other cardio equipment will be reserved for the project.

Also, between 10:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays, the Fitness Center will be closed entirely. There is still some space available for participation in the research project. E-mail jfujita04@georgefox.edu if interested.

Saturday will be “Community Appreciation Night” at the Bruins’ basketball games against UPS. With school still not in session, the department of athletics is opening the doors for free admission to all fans. Audition for both the Spring Comedy, The Triumph of Love, and the Spring One Act Festival Monday, January 12 from 7:30-10:00 p.m. in Wood-Mar Auditorium.

Bring a 90 second comic monologue (preferably classical) to your audition.  If you don’t have a monologue, there will be a few available at the audition sign in table.

The audition sign-up sheet is on the door to the Theatre & Fine Arts Offices, located in the Ross Center, Room 101.

The Triumph of Love call back is Tuesday, January 13 from 7:00-10:00 p.m.

Effective Jan. 1, Oregon’s minimum wage increased 5.7 percent, from $7.95 to $8.40 per hour. Student employees will receive the new pay rate for any hours worked in 2009. Since the Jan. 10 student pay day is for hours students worked in December 2008, those hours will be paid at $7.95 per hour. Feb. 10 will be the first pay day students will see their pay reflect $8.40 per hour.

The Portland Center Bookstore will have extended hours from Monday, Jan. 5, 2009 through Friday, Jan. 16, 2009.

The hours will be as follows:
Monday through Thursday 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.
Friday 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Closed daily from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m.

Regular store hours will resume on Monday, January 19, 2009.

IT is looking for student artwork to display on the large wall behind the front desk. This is a great way for you to showcase your work. Last year a few pieces were even bought by adoring fans!

Bring your artwork from home, from your room, or make something new and bring it to the IT Service Desk located on the third floor of Stevens ASAP. Space is limited.
