This Friday, Jan. 16, is the last day to return books for a refund at the University Store’s textbook annex, as well as using the price-matching program. You must provide a receipt for proof of purchase to receive a refund. Bookstore hours are 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. through Friday.
W-2s will be mailed to students that worked in 2008 no later than Monday, February 2, to the same address each student employees’ monthly paycheck is sent. For most students, this is the campus box. Your W-2, which states your earnings and any taxes withheld for the 2008 calendar year, will be needed to file your tax return(s) that are due by April 15 each year. The W-2 also provides information needed to complete the FAFSA.Â
If you want to get started completing your tax return or your FAFSA before you receive your W-2, you can use the year to date information from your last pay check of 2008 (probably your December 10 paycheck). If you can’t find your December pay statement, it will be best to wait for your W-2. Due to the tight deadlines for issuing W-2s, HR will not be able to honor requests for replacement pay statements before the W-2s are finished.
When you receive your W-2, be sure to keep it in a safe place. A replacement W-2 will require a written request and a $5.00 replacement fee. There may also be a two-day turnaround to process a replacement W-2.

Please join the university community in saying farewell to Al Zimmerman (Planned Giving) at a reception from 4 to 5 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 20, in the Duke Atrium in the Stevens Center. Refreshments will be served. The event was postponed twice previously because of inclement weather.
Al left the university to serve as executive director of the Portland-based Northwest Christian Community Foundation, a conduit for generating gifts in support of a wide range of Christian ministries. He had worked at George Fox for three years.

Each year, ISC seeks a number of teachers who are passionate about their relationship with Christ, committed to teaching, and open to serving God in China for a minimum of two years. The organization is seeking teachers with state or Association of Christian Schools International teaching credentials.
ISC is a network of six international schools in China. Its schools are K-12 and use English-language instruction, and students are the children of Christian tent-makers, international business people and diplomats. They come from a wide range of countries, with the majority from Asia (South Korea, Japan, Singapore, etc.). By Chinese law, ISC is not permitted to admit Chinese students.

Campus security will open the Fitness Center at 5 a.m. on Monday, Wednesday and Friday for the next 10 weeks. At 6:30 a.m., a student research project will use the Fitness Center, so the equipment available for community use will be limited. The project also takes place on Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., during which time the Fitness Center will be closed.

We have negotiated with our neighbors to allow us to use 78 parking spots in a neighboring lot on a trial basis.
The lot on the corner of 69th Ave and Hampton is available to you after 5 p.m. during the week and all day on Saturdays. There is only one request from the building owners: PLEASE DO NOT PARK IN THE SPOTS CLOSEST TO THEIR BUILDINGS. Â If you do, you will run the risk of being towed.

Theresa Schierman joined Student Financial Services as a financial aid counselor in December. For the past year, she worked as the student loan market manager for U.S. Bank Corporate in Minneapolis. Her position served all universities and colleges within the state of Oregon. Prior to that, Theresa was employed at the University of Portland as a financial aid counselor (2000-07), a student loan processor (1995-99), and a student loan coordinator (1992-94). She is an active member of the Oregon Association of Student Financial Aid Administrators. Theresa lives in Portland with husband David, and they have seven children and five grandchildren. She is a member of St. Anthony’s Church in Tigard.
Christa Hill joined the university this month to work as an administrative assistant II at the Portland Center. She comes from Cascade College, where she was an administrative assistant to the teacher education department and college faculty for the past three years. Before that, she served at Cascade as an assistant to the dean of students (1998 to 2004) and an administrative assistant for student services (1996-98). Christa earned a bachelor’s degree in interdisciplinary studies from Cascade College in 2002. She lives in Portland with husband Jason.
Lissa Forbes joined undergraduate admissions as an administrative assistant this month. Since 2007, she has worked at Tilikum on a part-time basis. Before that, she was a nursing assistant at a family health clinic in Pennsylvania in 2006-07. Lissa earned a bachelor’s degree in organizational communication from George Fox in 2004 and lives in Newberg with her husband, Nate Forbes, the Day Camp manager at Tilikum. They attend Rock Harbor Church in Sherwood.
Brendon Connelly (Graduate Admissions) left the university in December to be director of finance and development for Northwest Yearly Meeting. Brendon had worked at George Fox for six years.
Bruce Strom (SPS) left George Fox last month to join the faculty at Argosy University.
Gayle Denham (Student Financial Services) retired from George Fox in December to spend more time with family and in ministry.
Tiffany Tangen (Library) left the university in December to continue her education in the MAT program at the University of Portland.
Marla Sweningson (Student Financial Services) is now a financial aid counselor. She formerly worked as a student account specialist.
Brent Weaver’s (Performing Arts) Advent cantata for chorus, organ, winds and percussion was performed at Central Congregational Church of Atlanta Dec. 14 in honor of its retiring choral director. The church commissioned the work in 2001 through a grant from the American Composers Forum.
Jim Steele’s (Management) article “360 Degree Feedback Enhances Executive Education†was featured in Revolve: Centering on 360s, a newsletter for organizational development professionals. Steele also recently traveled to Phoenix for a working session as a member of the examination forms review committee for the Human Resources Certification Institute.
Joel Perez (Student Life) presented “Tools in the Cultural Competency†to all the faculty and staff at Northwest University in Kirkland, Wash., on Jan. 7.
Paul Anderson’s (Religious Studies) article, “The Light of Christ Leads Followers in the Process of Individual and Corporate Discernment,†was published in the Friends’ Voice in December, and his interpretation of Revelation 17:1-14 was published in the January issue of Interpretation. Also, Paul presented “The Mission of the Christ-Centered Quaker College†at the Quaker Theological Discussion Group in Boston in November, and there he also participated in a review of the book Psychological Insights into the Bible, in the Psychology and Biblical Studies Section of the national Society of Biblical Literature meetings. At those meetings his book, The Fourth Gospel and the Quest for Jesus, was reviewed in a major session of the John, Jesus, and History Group, and he responded to the reviews. Paul’s books will be featured at the Search for Meaning: Pacific Northwest Spirituality and Theology Book Festival, hosted by Seattle University in February.

If so, and you will be a traditional undergraduate student for the 2009-10 academic year, you may be qualified to apply for the George Fox Alumni Association Scholarship Program. Each year, the George Fox Alumni Association awards 16 scholarships to current students who are direct descendants (children or grandchildren) of George Fox alumni. In total, the Alumni Association will award $17,000 to students for the 2009-10 academic year.

If you watched the news this past weekend, certain brands of peanut butter have been recently linked to an outbreak of salmonella in more than 10 states, including Oregon.
Because of that, Bon Appetit will not be serving or providing peanut butter anywhere on campus until the brand we use has been deemed safe by the FDA. Thank you for your understanding, and we will let the campus know when this ban has been lifted. If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to contact Denny Lawrence.
