The Associated Student Community will discuss the idea of giving money to help remodel the Bruin Den at a meeting between 3 and 4 p.m. Monday, Feb. 16, in the Bruin Den. A Faculty Teaching Forum, “An Introduction to Second Life Educators,” is scheduled from noon to 1 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 19, in Hoover 104 (Hoover-Hatfield Library).

Over the last two years, several faculty members at George Fox have been exploring and using Second Life, a multi-user virtual environment, for teaching and learning. Join Robin Ashford (Portland Center Library) and Scot Headley (EDFL) as they present on Second Life and its potential for use by professors and other educators.

The university’s Associated Student Community is teaming with the AARP, IRS and the Oregon Department of Revenue to sponsor a free tax consultation service, Tax-Aide, between 2 and 5 p.m. Feb. 13, Feb. 27, and April 3 in the computer lab on the second floor of the Hoover Academic Building.

Sessions also will be hosted from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Feb. 14, Feb. 18, March 7, and April 4.

The Liberal Arts and Critical Issues Program will continue its exploration of issues around the future of the American Dream on Monday, Feb. 16. Speaker Shoshon Toma-Sweet will speak about his experience as a legislative assistant in Oregon and as a board member of the Oregon Center for Christian Values.

Also speaking will be Kathleen Gathercoal (Graduate Psychology), who will discuss the role of the church and advocacy on national issues.

The program, entitled “Constructing the Dream: Civil Society and the Role of Government,” runs from 4:40 to 5:30 p.m. and from 7 to 7:50 p.m. in Hoover 105. The university community is invited to attend.

Alumna and author Dawn Herzog Jewell will be on the Newberg campus on Monday, Feb. 16, to talk about her work helping victims of sex trafficking. She will be speaking in chapel at 10:40 a.m. in Bauman Auditorium and host a book signing at 11:45 a.m. in the University Bookstore. She is the author of Escaping the Devil’s Bedroom.

Herzog Jewell’s chapel talk will weave the stories of individual victims of sexual exploitation with an examination of the realities that got them there in North America and overseas. She also will highlight ministries that are reaching one life at a time through prayerful visits to strip-clubs, bars and seedy streets.

George Fox student designers will showcase their fashion creations on a runway in the west end of the Student Union Building dining hall at 7 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 28. Dress is business casual, and there is no admission fee (donations welcome).

If there is any possibility that you will use tuition remission during the 2009-10 academic year, whether for yourself, a spouse, and/or dependent(s) you must complete a Tuition Remission Request Form for each person and submit it by Monday, March 2.

The group Timothy’s Charge invites the university community to join them every Wednesday and Friday night at 7:30 p.m. in Hoover 210 for worship, the teaching of Scripture, and prayer. Or, you are welcome to drop by Stevens 307 Tuesday afternoons at 1:30 p.m. for a faculty-led Bible study through the book of Galatians.

The university community is invited to a Spanish chapel at 10:40 a.m. this Friday, Feb. 13, in Hoover 105. Students who attend will receive Spiritual Life formation credit.

All employees are invited to attend Human Resources’ annual Wellness and Benefit Fair between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. Friday, Feb. 13, in the Cap and Gown Room. Benefit providers will be on hand to answer your questions (open enrollment starts Monday, Feb. 16, and runs through Monday, March 16) and tell you about two new benefit plans.

Dr. David Kinzie, a psychiatrist at Oregon Health and Science University, will speak at the Newberg campus at 12:45 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 11, in the  Villa Academic Complex’s Room 117.

Kinzie founded the Intercultural Psychiatric Program and the Torture Treatment Center of Oregon. Founded in 1977, the center was the nation’s first psychiatric center for immigrants who escaped war and genocide. The clinic is one of the largest of its kind in the country, treating 1,200 people from around the world.

Lon Fendall (Center for Peace Studies/Center for Peace and Justice) invites anyone who has a interest in hearing how Kinzie helps people deal with their psychological trauma and how he has made a difference in the lives of so many.

The Center for Peace Studies and Graduate Department of Clinical Psychology are co-hosting Kinzie’s visit. The event begins with lunch at noon, followed by Kinzie’s presentation. There is no fee to attend.
