Spring is upon us, and plans for this year’s George Fox community garden are blooming. A meeting to discuss this year’s garden projects is scheduled at 9 p.m. Wednesday, March 18, in the second-floor lounge of the Hoover Academic Building. Plans this year are to add a new watering system, a new variation of crops, and gardening education. Find out how to get involved and learn more about community garden membership and our mission and vision.

After 5 p.m. during the week and on Saturdays, we have been extended an opportunity to use the parking area across from the South building’s west entrance in the Triangle Terrace complex. The owners have asked however, that we DO NOT park directly in front of the buildings.

Please also DO NOT park in the lot during regular business hours or leave your car parked in their lot overnight. Your car may be towed. Please abide by the guidelines so that we can maintain our positive relationship with our neighbors.

One note about our own parking areas: DO NOT park along yellow or red curbs or in the loading zones. We have established these areas for safety purposes.

As a preventative security measure, all exterior doors at the Portland Center South Building will automatically lock at 7:15 p.m. and will be locked ALL day on Saturdays.

You will be required to use your GFU ID card in the card reader to gain access to the building after 7:15 p.m. or on Saturdays. You do currently need your ID card to access the North building at all times.

Doors will NOT be allowed to be propped open.

Please stop by the front office during regular business hours (Monday-Thursday 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. or Friday 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.) to have your ID card checked for validity. If your card is faulty, a new one will be printed for you free of charge.

With funding from the Clella Iles Jaffe Cross Cultural Endowment Fund, undergraduate and graduate students are invited to apply for grants for projects and activities that will promote cross-cultural understanding and racial or ethnic reconciliation in a global or significantly diverse context.

Priority will be given to projects dealing with:

• Racial reconciliation
• Peacemaking
• Organizational communication
• Cinema/media/broadcast
• The communication arts in general
• Cross cultural experiences that will enhance the student’s professional career

Grants may not be used for research projects and trips, Juniors Abroad, semesters off campus, and service programs.
Students may apply by submitting a letter of application and description of the project or experience, along with a faculty letter of support, to: Lon Fendall, director of the Center for Global Studies and the Center for Peace and Justice (lfendall@georgefox.edu). Inquiries are welcome about the suitability of project ideas.

Applications are due on March 31. A faculty committee will meet shortly after that and decide which proposals to fund.

Come learn how to buy, sell, and finance a house at the second portion of the Real Estate Workshops “Finding the Right House and Making an Offer” Tuesday, March 10 from 7-9 p.m. in Hoover 103.  Free pizza and drinks will be provided.

The Department of Performing Arts will present its annual Honors Recital at 7:30 p.m. Monday, March 16, in Bauman Auditorium. This recital features select students chosen from the top performers in our Honors Recital competition. Please join us for an evening of fabulous music and support the hard work of our students.

If you applied to be an Orientation Leader/Peer Advisor, please stop by the table outside the Student Life Office to sign up for an interview!  Interviews will be held during the next two weeks and the week after Spring Break.

The HMS Resident Life staff is hosting two “Relationships nights.” 

Tuesday, March 10 from 8:30-9:45 p.m. will be a time for each gender to talk about their own relationship struggles separate from each other.  Then Tuesday, March 17 from 8:30-9:45 p.m. there will be group time with guest speakers from the George Fox commonity and a discussion held to talk about common struggles and concerns.  

The purpose of these nights is to focus on Christ while exploring Godly relationships in a fallen world.  Discussions will be at HMS.  Hope to see you there!

You can now access the university’s Safety Committee minutes on FoxFiles. Follow the instructions below to bookmark them.

1. Log in to FoxFiles.

2. Click the yellow folder titled “Root” on the upper left side.

3. On the right side of the screen, click the “Committees” folder and then the “Safety Committee” folder.

4. In the dark blue band at the top, to the right of the directory name, click the blue ribbon with plus sign icon.

5. A bookmark will be added to your list of bookmarks on the left.

6. When you log in to FoxFiles again, you can just click the bookmark on the left to quickly go to the “Safety Committee” directory.

The first step of this process is registering your group, which will be randomly selected for a spot in Tent City. This spot will determine the order in which you can sign up for the Junior’s Abroad Trip of your choice. Essentially, the lower your group’s number, the better chance you have of getting your top pick. You can only have 3-5 individuals in the group and each member can only be in one group. Following are Department of Performing Arts events scheduled next week. All take place in Bauman Auditorium, and admission is free.

On Thursday, March 12, at 7:30 p.m., Emily Nicole Jones (mezzo-soprano) and Emily Jackson (soprano) will present a senior/junior recital.

On Friday, March 13, at 7:30 p.m., a Jazz Band concert is scheduled.

Finally, on Saturday, March 14, at 7:30 p.m., Teddi Teague (mezzo-soprano) will present her senior recital.

Please join us in supporting our students.

All staff are invited to join us for staff lunch at noon Monday, March 9, in the Cap and Gown Room. The University Players will be performing for us as we enjoy our lunch and fellowship with each other. The cost is only $3.

This is a final reminder of events presented by the Department of Performing Arts this weekend. All events take place in Bauman Auditorium.

On Friday, March 6, from 12:40 to 1:30 p.m., a Students in Recital is scheduled, followed by a Piano Master Class for current piano students in the Greenroom at 4 p.m. Then, at 7:30 p.m., pianists Kenneth Willson, Barbara Stewart, Dan Miller, Becca Couch, Bethany Taft, Joseph Forster, James Pick, Cameron DeWhitt, Allen Cassell, Andrew Payne, and Beth Sellers will present a “Multi-Piano Extravaganza.”

Finally, at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, March 7 (please note the time change), Emily Yarnold, soprano, and Ashley Salisbury, mezzo-soprano, will present their junior recital. Admission is free. Please join us in supporting our students and faculty.

In addition, there will be an off-campus opportunity to see one of our faculty, Dr. Kenn Willson (Performing Arts) perform with Kenneth Beare (tenor) and Maria Choban (piano). They will perform “Winterreise and Fantasy in f-minor” in their “Death by Schubert” performance. It will be held at the Southminster Presbyterian Chuch (at the corner of Denney and Hall in Beaverton) at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, March 7. Tickets are $10 for adults and $8 for seniors and students or $20 for a family. Children under 12 are free. 

The South Africa May Serve team is putting on a taco night after Shalom at 10 p.m. Thursday, March 12, in the Bruin Den. Support our team by buying a taco for a $1. Come by for a late-night study snack and fun.

Fall 2009 housing selection will be online in BruinData beginning Monday, March 16. Before then, you should figure out two things:
 
1)  Who you want to live with. Group sizes can range from 2-6 people.

Tilikum Center for Retreats and Outdoor Ministries will host its seventh annual run/walk event to raise funds to get under-resourced children and youth to summer camp. The event is scheduled for 10 a.m. Saturday, April 18, at Champoeg State Park.

Participants raise donations per kilometer that they run or walk, with a minimum donation of $35 required to participate in the event. For children 12 and younger, a $5 minimum is required. Participants will receive a T-shirt and prizes will be awarded. This year, there will be special prizes for teams. Gather people from your department, your floor, or any group.

George Fox will host the Oregon Symphony in its 21st appearance in Newberg at 8 p.m. Friday, March 20. The concert is free to George Fox employees — a gift from George Fox board member Ken Austin and his wife, Joan, founders of A-dec.

The Austins have provided the university with a limited number of tickets for its employees. These tickets are separate from those to be issued by the Newberg Area Chamber of Commerce to the general public. George Fox employees (half time and over) may pick up their tickets — limit two per employee — on a first-come first-served basis starting at 9 a.m. Thursday, March 12, at the first floor Information Center in Stevens Center. Phone reservations will not be taken except for employees at the Portland and Salem centers.

Beginning at 9 a.m. Wednesday, March 18, any remaining tickets (again, a limit of two per employee) will be available — also on a first-come first-served basis — to those who sign up on a waiting list. If you find that you are not able to attend the concert, please return your tickets for another employee to use.

Tickets for the NCAA Division III Women’s Basketball National Tournament game on Saturday are now on sale in the athletics department office. The cost is $6 for adults and $3 for students, children, and seniors 55 and older. Everyone must have a ticket. This is an NCAA postseason event and regular season passes are not valid for admission. Advance tickets may be purchased in person (no over-the-phone sales) from the athletics office. This is highly recommended to avoid long lines at the ticket booths on game night. Tickets also may be purchased at the door. The No. 2-ranked Bruins (27-0) will host either Chapman or Occidental in a second-round game after drawing the only bye of the tournament.

Because classes are over before Cinco de Mayo, join Bon Appetit this Thursday, March 5, to celebrate our own “Cinco de Marzo” for dinner between 4:30 and 7 p.m. in the Klages Dining Hall.

Great Mexican foods, festive music and strawberry “margarita smoothies” will make it a memorable evening. Free to all students on board plans and only $7.75 for everyone else.
