This Sunday, March 15, at 3 p.m., a memorial service will be held in Hoover 105 for Ryan Bartlett, who died tragically in a car accident in Malawi in December, where he and his family were serving as missionaries with Free Methodist World Missions.

Ryan graduated from George Fox in 1994 as a business management major with a call to ministry. After graduation, he married Katie Bertagna and pursued his Master of Divinity from Asbury Theological Seminary. After completing his education, he served as senior pastor of Prescott Free Methodist Church in Arizona for five years and was ordained as a minister in 2005.

In 2007, with Free Methodist World Missions, Ryan began his service as principal of the Great Commission Bible School in Malawi, Africa. He is survived by his wife, Katie, and three children. A memorial service was held in December in Roseburg, but this memorial service allows the George Fox community and other supporters of his ministry to gather and to celebrate his life. The service will be led by Paul Anderson, Ryan’s college mentor and friend. Childcare will be provided.

The women’s basketball team plays Friday, March 13, in the NCAA Division III National Championship Tournament Sectional at Thomas More College in Crestview Hlls, Ky., near Cincinnati. The No. 2-ranked (WBCA) and 28-0 Bruins will meet Oglethorpe University (27-3) at 5 p.m. Eastern time (2 p.m. Pacific).

The winner will play Saturday, March 14, at 7 p.m. Eastern time (4 p.m. Pacific) against the winner of the Thomas More (28-2) vs. Hope College (27-1) game Friday, with that winner advancing to the Final Four in Holland, Mich., March 20-21.

KFOX radio will provide live internet audio of all Bruin games in the sectional. Host Thomas More will provide LiveStats and a live video feed of all games on the Internet through a local cable company. Links are provided for all multimedia coverage on the George Fox athletics Web site home page and women’s basketball home page in the schedule section.

The Department of Performing Arts will present the university’s Jazz Band in concert at 7:30 p.m. Friday, March 13, in Bauman Auditorium. Admission is free.

The Psychology Club would like to invite all psychology majors, minors, and others who are interested to Sue O’Donnell’s house Saturday, March 14 at 7 p.m. to watch the movie Memento.

Everyone is welcome to join in on a “Sweet 16” party as the George Fox women take on Oglethorpe in the Sweet 16 round of the NCAA Division III basketball playoffs at 2 p.m. this Friday, March 13, in the Klages Dining Hall.

We will listen to live audio and watch live stats. We also are working on a live video feed as well, hopefully synchronized with Justin Sweeney’s KFOX broadcast. The game begins promptly at 2 p.m.; come early if you can. There will be free popcorn, chips and salsa!

Based on feedback from a number of faculty and staff, we are going to take the retention project that was announced at the last community meeting in a slightly different tack.

Instead of assigning students to individuals for follow-up, we are going to post the retention conversation point of the week in the e-nnouncments and encourage all faculty and staff to use these messages with any undergraduate student who is in your regular network (advisees, student employees, etc.). While we won’t be able to assess the impact of these interactions, we think it will be easier for everyone to weave this information into your regular conversations with students.

Watch for the first “talking point” in Monday’s e-nnouncements.

Did the dog eat your benefit enrollment form? All employees must return it, even if you’re making no changes. Print a new one from the benefit Web page and return it to HR (Box 6108) by Monday, March 16. All other necessary forms are also on the benefit pages. New medical and dental deductions start March 31.

The culmination of FoxSecret will be a prayer/reflection night from 8 to 9 p.m. Monday, March 16, in the Cap and Gown Room. All of the postcards collected will be put on display for the George Fox community to reflect on and pray over. Please join us at any point during this time.

FoxSecret is a mimic of the nationwide PostSecret, in which people write anonymous secrets on postcards and send them in. Through it we we hope to recognize, celebrate, and prayerfully lift up the people in our community.

The theatre department will present its spring production, The Triumph of Love, this Thursday through Sunday, March 12-15, in Wood-Mar Auditorium. Performances take place at 7:30 p.m. each night through Saturday and at 2 p.m. on Sunday.

The play, directed by Rhett Luedtke (Performing Arts), is an 18th-century romantic comedy filled with all the confusions and complexities of love. Employees receive one complimentary ticket, available for pick-up at the University Store. Students are welcome to see the show free of charge on Thursday, March 12, and may pick up those tickets at the University Store.

The cost for additional tickets is $10 for general admission, $8 for seniors and alumni, and $6 for students and children under 12. To purchase tickets or find out more, visit the university’s theatre site.

A career management seminar is scheduled at the Portland Center from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday, March 14. Sponsored by the School of Professional Studies, the seminar is for those interested in discovering their God-given abilities and translating them into organizations, positions, and job titles. Also covered are networking resources, resume writing, and what will it take to be hired in this job market.

A group of men and women being trained for pastoral work and other leadership positions in their churches in Rwanda would like to learn the basics of computer operation to help them get jobs to support their ministry. For this training, at least two laptops are needed, with Windows and Office on them.

If you have such a computer you’re not using and would be willing to donate it for this project, the Juniors Abroad group going to Rwanda in May could deliver it. If interested, contact Lon Fendall (Center for Peace and Justice/Center for Global Studies) at ext. 2685 or lfendall@georgefox.edu.

Join student Kohleun Adamson as she shares poetry and creative nonfiction from her time spent in the Middle East exploring life writing and its relation to peace building. Kohleun will share during an “Intellectual Feast” at 4 p.m. Tuesday, March 10, in the Hoover Faculty Lounge.

In Jordan and the West Bank, Kohleun met with Arab women of various national heritages, collecting stories from their lives, in their own voices. Come hear some of these stories retold, dialogue about this unique avenue for peace building, and enjoy some food.

You are invited to attend the opening reception for the Student Art Exhibit from 5 to 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, March 10, in the Minthorne and Lindgren galleries. Enjoy artwork created by George Fox students during the past year. Prize winners will be announced and refreshments will be served.
