You are invited to come listen to Eric Middleton as he lectures on his book The New Flatlanders at 7 p.m. Thursday, April 16, in EHS 102 on the Newberg campus. Eric is a British teacher/lecturer with master’s degrees in natural sciences, psychology and philosophy. In The New Flatlanders, he challenges traditional ways of looking at reality by engaging readers in a “voyage of discovery starting with questions.”
Join us in Room 160 on April 23 from noon to 1 p.m. for a brown bag ‘Lunch & Learn’ to hear about Jeff VandenHoek’s recent mission trip to India.
He spent 17 days providing “train the trainer” sessions that will ultimately impact 500k children in rural villages. Jeff describes the trip as a continuous “WOW!”, and will share stories and a fascinating PowerPoint — and maybe a few Indian treats.

Many of the prices have been reduced, but some of the basic prices have been raised. The Department of Writing and Literature is hosting the West Region Conference on Christianity and Literature April 16-18. The university community is invited to attend the plenary sessions for the conference, free of charge. These sessions include a reading by Brian Doyle, editor of Portland magazine, on Thursday, April 16, at 7:30 p.m. in Hoover 105; a talk by Amy Frykholm, an editor at Christian Century, on Friday, April 17, at 10:45 a.m. in the Villa Academic Complex; and a reading by poet Jeanne Murray Walker on Friday, April 17, at 7:30 p.m. in the Cap and Gown Room.

The theatre department will present its Spring One-Act Festival, featuring the work of the university’s best student directors and designers, April 17-19, in Wood-Mar Auditorium.
Performances are scheduled at 7:30 p.m. each night with the exception of the Sunday, April 19 show, scheduled as a 2 p.m. matinee. Employees receive one complimentary ticket, and students may attend for free on Friday, April 17. Additional tickets are $10 for general admission, $8 for seniors and George Fox alumni, and $6 for students and children under 12 years of age.

The four one-acts will include Cindy Lou Johnson’s Brilliant Traces, directed by Jordan Beanblossom; William Inge’s Glory in the Flower, directed by Stephen Pick; Tennessee Williams’ The Lady of Larkspur Lotion, directed by Caleb Thurston; and In Pursuit, performed and choreographed by the university’s dance company.
Ken Armstrong, dean of the School of Management, will speak at a George Fox Auxiliary luncheon at noon on Friday, April 17, in the Cap and Gown Room on the Newberg campus. Reservations are required and tickets are $7.50 per person.
Armstrong came to the university in the fall of 2008. From 1995 to 2003, he served as the dean of the College of Professional Studies at Anderson University in Anderson, Ind., and more recently served there as the Austin/Cooper Endowed Professor of Global Business Studies.

In response to the Best Christian Workplace Survey, we have developed an assessment plan for improving the workplace at George Fox. This plan will be conducted between now and the end of fall semester. Over this nine-month period, you will periodically be sent links to a number of surveys. The surveys will be spaced so that you will only be asked to spend about 15 to 20 minutes per request. The scheduling of surveys like this is to help keep your time commitment low since our time is often very limited.
The assessment plan also includes focus groups in the fall that you might be asked to participate in. Once we have analyzed all of the information from the surveys and focus groups, the University Assessment Committee will discuss options with other groups across campus. Potential changes and solutions will be further examined with additional focus groups in the spring. Recommendations will be forwarded at that time.
This is a somewhat long process, but it is necessary to make the most informed decisions about improving George Fox as a place to work. Hopefully you will find it to be an inclusive process as well. Thank you in advance for your time and contributions to this assessment plan.
