The card access for Wheeler Sports Center will be deactivated for the summer. The building will be open from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Friday.

The university will host end-of-year celebrations in both Newberg and at the Portland Center on Monday, May 4. The Newberg event will include the presentation of service awards, a prize drawing, announcement of the support staff and administrator of the year recipients, and an hor d’oeuvres and dessert reception. It will begin at 3:30 p.m. in Wood-Mar Auditorium, followed by the reception in the Ron Gregory Atrium in EHS.

At the Portland Center, refreshments will be served beginning at 10:30 a.m. in the main lobby, followed by a program at 11 a.m. in Room 155. The celebration will include the presentation of service awards to those who work at the Portland Center.

If you have not already done so, please submit your April time sheet (support staff) or time-off report (administrators) this week. Please be sure it is complete, accurate and signed by both you and your supervisor before sending it to HR at Box 6108, including your cost center and ID number. You can find your Employee ID number on Bruindata and/or on your pay statement.

If your supervisor is not available to sign your time sheet by Monday, May 4, please send a copy to HR and keep the original until it has been signed.

April student time sheets must be in HR no later than 3 p.m. Monday, May 4, so please have them hand-delivered to HR as soon as you have processed them. If you are not on the Newberg campus, please fax your student time sheets to 503-554-2186 and then send the originals to HR in campus mail. Also, please check to be sure all of your students have submitted their time sheets to you and follow up with any who have not.

If your student has school-year hours that are continuing through the first three days of May, please include these hours on their April time sheet.

And, as always, we appreciate you checking for the following:

• Student’s name (be sure it is legible)
• Student’s ID number
• Cost center number
• Student’s signature (If the student forgot to sign it, please bring it to HR anyway. Do not send students to HR to sign time sheets.)
• Your signature

Reminder: If a student delivers his or her own time sheet to HR, it must be in a sealed envelope to comply with Federal Work Study regulations.

Paychecks will be mailed to the most recent address that Mail Services has on file.  If your campus box is still open, your check will go there instead.

The university will host two commencement ceremonies on the Newberg campus Saturday, May 2. The traditional undergraduate ceremony will take place in Miller Gymnasium/Wheeler Sports Center at 2 p.m., with audience seating at 1 p.m. Tickets are required for the traditional undergraduate ceremony.

The graduate, seminary and School of Professional Studies ceremony will take place in Miller Gymnasium/Wheeler Sports Center at 7 p.m., with audience seating at 6 p.m.

In addition, the baccalaureate service is scheduled for 9:30 a.m. Saturday in Bauman Auditorium. Baccalaureate is an undergraduate worship service providing graduating seniors, their families, faculty, administrators, staff and other guests the opportunity to worship.

There will be no student mail delivery after 2 p.m. Friday, May 1. This will allow for the transition from spring semester to summer operations.

The Staff Development Committee invites all employees to the university’s annual ice cream social from 2:30 to 3:30 p.m. Tuesday, May 5, in the Ron Gregory Atrium in EHS. Enjoy a break in the day with your colleagues, and feel free to bring your student employees as well.

To access your April online pay statement, please go to mygfu.georgefox.edu to get to the PeopleSoft login screen. Use the same user ID and password that you use to login to e-mail and Bruindata. Open “Self Service” in the menu on the left and click on “Payroll and Compensation.” You will see a list of all of your pay statements that have been processed in PeopleSoft. Click on the pay date in the far left column labeled “Check Date” to open your statement as a PDF file.

This is the last e-nnnouncment with instructions about accessing your pay statement online, so please be sure to save the instructions above if you have not already done so.

Also on this pay day, new premium amounts for optional life insurance and flexible spending account deductions go into effect.

Shane Roghaar, our TIAA-CREF representative, will be on the Newberg campus between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. Tuesday, May 12. The University Store is hosting a Graduation Sale this Wednesday through Friday, April 29 through May 1. Save 25 percent on all George Fox merchandise (except diploma frames). Store hours are 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Congratulations graduates!

Also, a reminder: The bookstore’s book buyback program also runs Wednesday through Friday, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Bring your books to the main entrance right outside the University Store in the SUB. To see what your books are worth, go to www.store.georgefox.edu, select the “Main Store” heading, then click “Sell” next to “Textbooks” at the top of the page. It’s important to know that you must enter “www” to get into the bookstore’s website.

Kendra Weddle Irons (Religious Studies) is leaving George Fox and moving to Texas. However, she still plans to teach two courses at the university through the Internet and by spending three weeks on site. She also will be teaching at Texas Wesleyan University in Fort Worth, Texas.

Clark Campbell (Graduate Psychology) is leaving the university to take a position as dean of the Rosemead School of Psychology at Biola University. Clark arrived at George Fox as an adjunct professor in 1990 and began full time in 1991. He is a former chair of the Department of Psychology and has been director of clinical training for the Graduate Department of Clinical Psychology for the past eight years.

Diane Wood (Education) is leaving George Fox to work on a national research project related to higher education governance and systems, and to complete her doctoral work at Oregon State.

David Meyer (Political Science) is leaving George Fox to take a position at Regent University in Virginia Beach, Va.

Kim Colantino (Writing/Literature) is leaving the university, as she is expecting a baby in October. She plans to work as an adjunct for a local community college starting next January.

Eric Funasaki (Mathematics) plans to leave the university to pursue other opportunities.

Polly Peterson (Writing/Literature) plans to go from full-time to adjunct status in the fall so she can spend more time with family.

Mark Benjamin (Spiritual Life) is leaving the university on May 22 to move with his family to Georgia this summer and eventually to North Carolina to help plant a church. A farewell/open house event is planned from 3 to 5 p.m. Thursday, April 30, at the Spiritual Life House.

Martha Wood (Student Life) is leaving George Fox on May 24 to continue her graduate education.

Jan Lefebvre (Development) was promoted to executive assistant of development.

About Our People
Melanie Springer Mock (Writing/Literature) received the university’s Faculty Achievement Award for Undergraduate Teaching, and Mary Peterson (Graduate Psychology) was selected recipient of the Faculty Achievement Award for Graduate Teaching. Also honored was Chris Koch (Psychology), named winner of the Faculty Research Award.

The following faculty members are on sabbatical for the full 2009-10 academic year: Michael Everest (Chemistry), Scot Headley (Education), Mark Ocker (SPS), Larry Shelton (Seminary) and Tim Timmerman (Visual Arts). Three faculty members – Viki Defferding (Spanish), Craig Johnson (Management) and Don Powers (Biology) – are on sabbatical for the fall semester, and Daniel Sweeney (Graduate Counseling) is on sabbatical for the spring semester.

Lori DeKruyf, Keith Dempsey and Michelle Cox (Graduate Counseling) attended the American Counseling Association’s 2009 conference in Charlotte, N.C. Michelle, along with students Emily E. Hazel, Annette Korkeakoski-Sears and Debra Richards, held a poster session titled “Faith Maturity in Older Adults: Factor Structure of the Faith Maturity Scale (FMS).” Michelle and student Brandi Walters held a poster session titled “Depression or Insomnia?: Diagnostic Complexity among Baby Boomers.” Keith co-presented with Dr. Manivong Ratts on “Advocacy Competencies Self-assessment Survey: A Tool for Measuring Advocacy Competence.” He also co-presented with Dr. Kent Butler to local mental health professionals on working with African American male clients. Lori co-presented with Dr. Manivong Ratts on “Multicultural and Advocacy Dimensions Model: Connecting the Multicultural Counseling Competencies and Advocacy Competencies.”

Several Writing/Literature faculty members presented at the West Region Conference on Christianity and Literature, hosted at George Fox April 16-18. Laura Simmons presented “The Wimsey Papers: Dorothy L. Sayers Speaks Truth to the Government”; Melanie Springer Mock, Ed Higgins, Polly Peterson and Kendra Weddle Irons presented “Channeling the Inklings: A Dialogue About Writing Group Success”; Kim Colantino presented “A New Liberation Theology: Jesse Jackson”; and Abigail Rine (adjunct) presented “Words Incarnate: Michele Roberts’s Creative Dissent.” Kathy Heininge participated as a convener for some sessions. Students who presented included Adrienne Swenson, Kohleun Adamson, Karith Magnuson and Margaret Diepenbrock.

Paul Anderson (Religious Studies) presented a review of recent Jesus scholarship over the last decade, “No Marginal Treatment of Jesus — Meier’s Project and Corollary Jesus Research Trends,” at the New Testament and Hellenistic Religions Section of the Pacific Northwest AAR/SBL/ASOR meetings at Pacific Lutheran University April 24-26. His review of the John, Jesus, and History Project (of which he is co-chair) and his outlining of his own theory of the origins and relations of gospel traditions were invited by the editors of ZNT and published this month in the Zeitschrift für Neues Testament 23 (April 2009) as “Das ‘John, Jesus and History’ Projekt — Neue Beobachtungen zu Jesus und eine Bi-optische Hypothese.”

Tamara Cissna (Marketing Communications) was named the university’s Employee of the Month.

Students who have not yet completed an Application for May Term or Summer Housing need to visit the Student Life Office ASAP as the deadline was Friday, April 24.

In order to live on campus during the summer, you must be:
– Taking a May Term class
– Working on campus 40 hours a week
– Working at Tilikum
– A Summer Rearch Scholar

Melissa Thomas (Registrar’s Office) and her husband Webb welcomed a daughter, Leigh Anderson Thomas, on Monday, April 13. The baby weighed 9 pounds and measured 20 ½ inches. She was born at St. Vincent’s Hospital in Portland.
