Consonare Chorale, a Portland based chorale ensemble which includes John Newberry (Portland Center Superintendent of Facilities), will present “Song Cycles and other Modes of Transportation “ on Saturday, May 30 at 7:30 p.m. at the Parkrose United Methodist Church, 11111 NE Knott, Portland, 97220. 

The concert includes Paul Simon’s “I’m a Train,” the Beatles “Drive My Car,” and James Taylor’s “That Lonesome Road” amongst others.  Advance tickets are $15.00 and can be obtained by contacting Consonare Chorale at consonarechorale.org or you can call John at extension 6199.  Tickets at the door are $18.00.  Cost for Seniors and students is $12.00.

The university is hosting a Science Camp for third- through sixth-graders June 22-26. The camp meets from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. daily in EHS 103 on the Newberg campus. All university offices in Newberg and at regional sites will be closed on Monday, May 25, to observe the Memorial Day holiday.

Due to the Memorial Day holiday on Monday, May 25, the courier schedule will be changed for next week only. He will go to the Portland Center every day Tuesday through Friday and will go to Salem on Tuesday and Thursday only, May 26 and 28.

Cut-off times remain the same. Items must be in Newberg Mail Services by 9:45 a.m. for delivery to Portland and Salem campuses.

Normal schedule will resume the following week.

This is a follow-up regarding the workplace survey the university is participating in — Oregon Business Magazine’s 2009 list of the “100 Nonprofits Best to Work For in Oregon.” We are currently below the minimum number of respondents required for inclusion in this assessment (we have about one-third of what we need). Seminary student Kenneth Springs (playing the role of Ferapont) and Student Financial Services representative Angela “Sundance” Milner (playing the role of Musician) are performing in Artists Repertory Theatre’s production of Three Sisters from now through June 14.  Performances are Wednesday through Saturday evenings at 7:30 p.m. and Sundays at 2 p.m. and 7:30 p.m.  Ticket prices vary by date.

To get mail to students this summer using the PeopleSoft addresses, please use the “Mailing Address” first and then the “Home Address.”

Also, a clarification: Any student who has kept his or her campus mailbox open during the summer will have a “Summer Campus Box”  in the “Mailing Address” in PeopleSoft. Please ignore the active “Campus Box” address during the months of May through mid-August.

If the student has a different mailing address during the summer, it also will be posted in the “Mailing Address” of PeopleSoft (i.e. Twin Rocks Camp, etc.)

The Marketing Communications office is collecting orders for name tags. For those who have regular face-to-face contact with the public and need to order a name tag, please submit your requests online at this Fox Forms name tag site. Provide the name of the person for whom the name tag is needed; title or department; and the budget to be charged. Examples of title or department include: Dean of Students/Student Life and Admissions Counselor/Admissions.

The next order will be placed Wednesday, May 20. Marketing Communications will verify your request and the information provided and place your order with all others.

As mentioned before, we are interested in continually assessing and improving the work environment at George Fox. With that in mind, we have started an assessment program that will take place over the next eight months. As part of this program, the university is taking part in the survey for Oregon Business Magazine’s 2009 list of the “100 Nonprofits Best to Work For in Oregon.”

We encourage you to express your honest views about George Fox on a comprehensive set of workplace aspects in the 100 Best employee survey. Your participation, and the answers you provide, will be strictly anonymous and confidential. We hope that all employees from every department and location in Oregon voice their candid opinions in this survey.

Each employee may complete just one survey. It takes about 15 minutes and can be completed from any computer, at work or home. Simply click on v2.decipherinc.com/survey/obm/obm09003?code=153GM. Please note: Your responses are not saved until you reach the last page of the survey. The deadline is June 12.

After the survey is complete, we will receive survey results that may help us find ways to improve job satisfaction, productivity and performance throughout the university. This survey is important because a number of our assessment measures have set comparison groups. The Best Christian Workplace survey many of you completed last year is very helpful but does not allow us to compare to other nonprofit organizations within our state. Therefore, the results from this survey will be extremely helpful in gaining greater insight into the workplace at George Fox.

Genesis will draw more than 150 incoming freshmen to the Newberg campus Friday, May 15. Among other activities, the visitors will register for classes and receive their student ID cards. Employees in the Stevens Center are asked to park somewhere other than the Stevens Center lot to accommodate the guests.

George Fox (33-9) will open the NCAA Division III Baseball National Championship Tournament against Cal Lutheran in the first round of the West Regional at Linfield College. The game, originally scheduled for Wednesday, was rescheduled for 7 p.m. Thursday, May 14, because of persistent rain Wednesday.

The Bruins are the No. 4 seed in the regional, while the Kingsmen (31-9) are the No. 3 seed in the six-team field. The regional champion will advance to the eight-team NCAA Division III World Series, scheduled for Friday through Tuesday, May 22-26, at Fox Cities Stadium in Appleton, Wis.

The Bruins earned the Northwest Conference’s automatic berth in the national tournament with a convincing 24-6 one-game playoff victory over co-NWC champion Pacific Lutheran on May 9.

The hanging baskets workshop originally scheduled for Thursday, May 14, has been rescheduled for 9 a.m. Tuesday, May 19, in the Plant Services Building at 1101 Villa Road.

The four-hour session will instruct you on how to make the gorgeous hanging baskets that grace our George Fox quad area. You will learn how these beauties are assembled and help Plant Services in the process. Feel free to join in the class at any time.

Dennis Littlefield returned to George Fox to serve as executive director of Tilikum Center for Retreats and Outdoor Ministries this month. Since 1998, he has been associate director of Twin Rocks Friends Camp in Rockaway Beach. Before that, he was a program director at Tilikum for 12 years. Dennis earned an MBA from George Fox in 1995 and a bachelor’s degree in business/economics from the university in 1984. He is married to Joan and the couple has two children, Elizabeth (21) and Andrew (16).

Angela Doty begins as associate director of Career Services this week. She comes from Northwest Christian University in Eugene, where she has been the director of career development and an academic advisor since 2005. She also received her education at Northwest Christian, earning an undergraduate degree in psychology (2000) and a master’s degree in professional counseling (2005). In addition to her current duties, Angela has been an admissions counselor, a counseling intern and an instructor. She holds the Global Career Development Facilitator credential and is currently serving as the president of the Oregon Career Development Association. She lives in Wilsonville.
