How should Americans think about the possibility of building peaceful relationships with countries like Iran, whose leaders seem to be so opposed to the U.S. and western democracy? Come hear Arli Klassen, the executive director of Mennonite Central Committee, a Christian relief and development group, talk about how the Mennonites have been involved in relating to Iran in ways that reduce the chances of violent confrontation.

Arli will speak at 7 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 27, in the Cap and Gown Room.

Richard Twiss, a prominent Native American Christian leader and the president of Wiconi International, will speak on “Removing Barriers and Building Bridges” at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 29, in the Library Special Collections Room on the second floor of the Newberg library. His address is part of “Thy Kingdom Come” week at the university.

The session is cosponsored by the Center for Peace and Justice. Refreshments will be available beginning at 7:15 p.m.

Twiss is also scheduled to speak in both chapels next week, on Monday and Wednesday beginning at 10:40 a.m. in Bauman Auditorium.

Mackey W. Hill, a professor emeritus at George Fox who turned 100 in May, died on Sept. 17. While his health had been failing for some time, he was still happy to greet family and friends at the Newberg Care facility and was aware of his visitors until the last day or two. Mackey was a professor of history and political science at the university from 1949 to 1974. A memorial service is scheduled for 
3 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 24, at Northside Community Church (Free Methodist), located at 1900 N. Hoskins St.

Jason Schwanz (IT) and his wife AJ welcomed a baby girl, Josephine Annabelle, on Sept. 14. She weighed 7 pounds, 15 ounces and was 19 inches long.

Jamie Tworkowski, founder of “To Write Love on Her Arms,” will be joining us in chapel on Wednesday, Sept. 23, from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. There will also be a talk-back session in the Bruin Den Annex from noon to 1 p.m. Also, Jamie will present a 7 p.m. session that night in Bauman Auditorium (spiritual formation credit is offered).

To Write Love on Her Arms is a nonprofit movement dedicated to presenting hope and finding help for people struggling with depression, addiction, self-injury and suicide.

The all-employee meeting set for this Thursday, Sept. 24, will begin 15 minutes earlier than originally scheduled, at 3:45 p.m. Snacks will be served beforehand for attendees to enjoy during the meeting. It will convene in Hoover 105 until 5 p.m.
