Would you like to carry a flag representing your cultural heritage in the Oct. 26 chapel to open Cultural Celebration Week? If so, please e-mail or call Dianna McIntyre (ext. 2649) or Alex Pia (ext. 2643) no later than Monday, Oct. 19. All you do is show up to chapel a few minutes early, carry your flag across the stage, and say the name of the country your flag represents into a microphone. If you volunteer, we will contact you the week before Cultural Celebration Week with details.

Who may carry a flag? Anyone who is from another country, lived in another country, was a missionary in another country, or has a cultural heritage from another country. It is a great way to show pride in your culture!

This is a last call for those who wish to share their culture by having a booth at the Cultural Fair, scheduled from 3 to 5 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 27, in the Ron Gregory Atrium in EHS. Contact Dianna McIntyre (ext. 2649) or Alex Pia (ext. 2643) by Oct. 20 to reserve your booth.

Ways to share your culture might include music, dance, videos, pictures, crafts, games, and, of course, the all-time favorite, food. So come join the fun! (We can reimburse you up to $30 for expenses if you give us your receipts.)

For those attending next Tuesday’s staff conference, please do not use any perfumes or fragrances, as some members of our staff have allergic reactions to these scents. Also, specialty coffees will be available for purchase in the morning at the church’s coffee shop. Prices range from $1.25 to $3.50.

The conference is scheduled from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Family Life Church in Newberg.

Come bring your family to a Halloween carnival on the Newberg campus, scheduled from 6 to 7:30 p.m. on Oct. 31. There will be games, face painting, a cider press and plenty of candy. Come enjoy some time together in a fun and safe environment this Halloween! Activities will be in the Stevens Center, Hoover and EHS.

Students on direct deposit can now view (and print) their pay statements each month through PeopleSoft by following these simple steps:

1.  Log in to MyGFU.  If you haven’t already added the login address to your favorites, this would be a good time to stop and do that.
2.  Open “Self Service” and click on “Payroll and Compensation.”  You will see a list of your pay statements that have been processed in PeopleSoft with some basic information included in each of the columns.
3.  Click on the pay date in the far left column labeled “Check Date” to open your statement as a PDF file. You can then print it if you want a hard copy, save the PDF file to another folder, or just refer to it again in the future in PeopleSoft.

Please note: If you have difficulty getting the self-service system to function correctly, you may need to change pop-up settings. For help, please contact the IT Service Desk at ext. 2569.

Students who are not on direct deposit will receive their paychecks through campus mail.  However, all student employees are strongly encouraged to sign up for direct deposit.  The University saves time and natural resources by providing pay statements through the self service function, you have access to your information anytime, and you can skip the drive to the bank.

The Bruin Bookstore recently received several new styles of clothing. Come check out the new sweatshirts and T-shirts while supplies last.

The Department of Visual Arts will host a guest speaker, photographer Dave Studarus, at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 22, in Hoover 105. The campus community is invited to attend and see samples of Dave’s work.

A native of Los Angeles, Studarus has photographed several celebrities and been contracted to do shoots for clients that include Variety, Sony Records, Universal Records, Motorola and several others. Samples of his work can be viewed at davidstudarus.com.

Several art alumni will be celebrated at the closing reception for the “Voices” art exhibition in the Lindgren Gallery next Tuesday, Oct. 20, from 5 to 6:30 p.m. All are former George Fox art students who continue to be significantly involved in making art.

Honored will be Elizabeth Kuzmovich, Chelsea Carbonell, Jessica Brittell, Megan Clark, Olga Ceballos and Kathleen Jones.

This Monday, Oct. 19, Elizabeth Grossman will discuss the connection between western habits and majority-world health at a Liberal Arts and Critical Issues event from 4:40 to 5:35 p.m. and from 7 to 7:55 p.m. in Hoover 105.

Elizabeth has contributed articles to The Washington Post, Chicago Tribune and numerous other publications. Her two newest books, High Tech Trash: Digital Devices, Hidden Toxics, and Human Health and Chasing Molecules: Poisonous Products, Human Health and the Promise of Green Technology, have been widely praised. You are invited to stop by the Plant Services building between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 15, to see our display of collectibles. Currently showing are a postcard collection from the early 1900s, owned by Debby O’Kelley; Bob Dexter’s collection of all 50 commemorative state quarters and his hand-tied fishing flies; and a full collection of Wallace and Gromit memorabilia, owned by Dixie Downey. Tuesday, Oct. 20, is the date for this year’s conference for our valued support staff. This is an all-day event that will keep these folks off campus, away from all of their regular duties. We know we will miss their contributions that day, but this once-a-year event is endorsed by the President’s Executive Leadership Team with the expectation that all support staff will attend, so we appreciate your full support as well. Some services may be reduced or not provided on that day, but things should be back to normal on Wednesday, Oct. 21.

For the first time, the students’ annual “Survivor” event will be posted live via the web. Just go to the Bruin Heritage’s Facebook page and click on the link, or type in rtsp://stream.georgefox.edu/live/survivor.sdp to view live footage of “Survivor” contestants trapped inside a van for up to 24 hours on Thursday, Oct. 15. Look for it also being played throughout campus, or just come and watch it in person outside of the Bruin Den.

Please send an e-mail to Peggy Kilburg (HR) if you would like to nominate a support staff member or administrator for Employee of the Month. Your e-mail should include the person’s name, job title, a concise but specific summary of this person’s contribution(s) to the university, its students, and/or its employees in the past 30 days or so (what was done, who was impacted, etc.), and any other information that you believe makes this person deserving of this award.

Please submit your nomination for October by this Friday, Oct. 16. The President’s Executive Leadership Team will then select the Employee(s) of the Month from the nominations submitted. The winner(s) will be announced at the all-employee meeting on Thursday, Oct. 22.

Just a reminder that at 7 p.m. this Thursday, Oct. 15, a “Movie & Munchies” event in EHS 102 will feature As We Forgive, a documentary about the 1994 genocide in Rwanda. Clint Baldwin will facilitate a time of brief conversation following the movie. Popcorn and other goodies will be provided. Feel free to bring your own as well.

George Fox’s CMENC (Collegiate National Association for Music Education) presents its second meeting of the year this Sunday, Oct. 18, at 7:30 p.m. in Ross 208. It will feature a panel of young music educators from the field discussing first-year experiences. Refreshments will be provided. The men’s and women’s golf teams will be participating in the Northwest Conference Fall Classics Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 17-18, at Heron Lakes Golf Course in Portland. These tournaments count as one-quarter of the overall team score for conference standings for the 2009-10 season.
