Any GFU student is invited to participate in the GarageBand Challenge.  Compose your work in GarageBand for the chance to win an iPod Touch and have your work played at the GarageBand Concert in the Foxhole on Thursday, November 19 at 7:30 p.m.

Entries are due by 5 p.m. Sunday, November 15.  Rules are posted by ASC Offices.

Students enter our classrooms with a range of motivations and abilities. In an upcoming Faculty Teaching Forum session, “Call Me Coach: Lessons From the World of Coaching,” we will discuss strategies and techniques from coaching that can inform our ability to draw out the best in our students. Neal Ninteman (Engineering) will be our presenter.

The session will be held from 12:40 to 2 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 18, in Cap & Gown A (note the different location than on academic calendar).

To reserve a lunch, e-mail Jere Witherspoon (jwithers@georgefox.edu) by 1:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 17. Everyone is welcome to attend the session, whether bringing a lunch or reserving a lunch. Please have your lunch ready so we can begin the conversation on time.

All faculty — full time, part time, and adjunct — are invited to attend Faculty Teaching Forums (FTFs). Video podcasts of FTFs will be available on iTunesU.

Author Margaret Feinberg will be a special guest on campus Monday, Nov. 16. Margaret is known for her relational teaching style and for inviting people to discover the relevance of God and his Word in a modern world. She will speak in chapel about her book, Organic God, and students are invited to join in a talk-back session with her directly after chapel in the Bruin Den.

This Saturday, Nov. 14, the university’s International Justice Mission (IJM) chapter is hosting a house party at 5 p.m. in EHS 102. We will watch the documentary At The End of Slavery: The Battle for Injustice in Our Time and discussing modern-day slavery and how we can respond as a community.

Please note the correction: The Winter Formal is Sunday, December 13 from 8-11 p.m. The theme this year is “Swing Into A Knight Of Enchantment” and it will be held at the Crowne Plaza Hotel in downtown Portland by the Convention Center. Look for tickets to be sold starting Monday, November 30.

A short 35 minute film about Leonard Knight and the story behind Salvation Mountain. With only one thing in mind, God’s Love, Leonard Knight made a mountain of adobe, paint, and desert junk that he has collected over the past few decades. The mountain displays a true love story about God’s love for Leonard and Leonard’s love for God. “God is LOVE, and I love you also.”

Come hear and see this story at Greenroom Friday, November 13 from 10:40-11:30 a.m. in Bauman Auditorium, followed by some acoustic songs.

The Bruin Heritage Society is looking for fully committed, spirited and passionate students who will bring an “insane atmosphere” to the sidelines at all home basketball games. Those interested must bring an enthusiasm to the gym that will make the opposition scared to play in the confines of Miller Gymnasium.

A meeting to discuss this “courtside chaos” plan is set for 7 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 12, in Hoover 105. This meeting is for anyone and everyone who wants to see this happen.

The final performances of the theatre’s fall production of The Diviners will be on the Wood-Mar Auditorium stage this week, with performances scheduled Thursday through Saturday, Nov. 12-14, at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday, Nov. 15, at 2 p.m.

The Diviners is a redemptive tale of a charismatic but backsliding preacher and his close newfound friendship with the eccentric Buddy Layman as they help each other divine for truth, faith, and hope.

All university employees will receive one complimentary ticket for any night. Your complimentary ticket is only available at the Box Office in the Bruin Bookstore.

George Fox women (including wives of university employees) are invited to join Ruth Baker for a walk at Champoeg Park this Saturday morning, Nov. 14. This event is the first extended walk for the Women’s Walking Club formed earlier this semester.

The event will begin in the Stevens Center parking lot at 9:45 a.m. for carpooling, and participants will arrive back at the parking lot at about noon. Questions about the event can be directed to Ruth via e-mail at rbaker@georgefox.edu.

Monday is last day to submit nominations for November Employee of the Month.

Please send an e-mail to Peggy Kilburg (HR) if you would like to nominate a support staff member or administrator for Employee of the Month. Your e-mail should include the person’s name, job title, a concise but specific summary of this person’s contribution(s) to the university, its students, and/or its employees in the past 30 days or so (what was done, who was impacted, etc.), and any other information that you believe makes this person deserving of this award.

Please submit your nomination by Monday, Nov. 16. The President’s Executive Leadership Team will then select the Employee(s) of the Month from the nominations submitted. The winner(s) will be announced at the all-employee meeting on Thursday, Nov. 19, and will receive a $100 gift certificate to the Jory Restaurant at the new Allison Inn & Spa in Newberg.

This years winter formal will be hosted at the Crowne Plaza in Portland on Saturday, Dec. 12, from 8 to 11 p.m. This year’s theme is “Swing Into a Knight of Enchantment.” Tickets are $8 for a single and $15 for a couple in advance and $10 per single and $18 per couple at the door. Encourage others to attend.

Urban Services is hosting a winter clothing drive to provide for our friends without homes in both Salem and Portland and would love your participation (this includes hats, socks, scarves, shoes, boots, jackets, sweaters and other warm things).

We will be going around to living areas collecting your contributions on Tuesday, Nov. 17, from 9 to 10 p.m. but will also have a bin outside the Christian Services office in the SUB throughout the week (Nov. 16-20).

This Friday, Nov. 13, the university’s Apple campus rep will put on a clinic to show faculty, staff and students some of the new features that the new Mac OSX Snow Leopard has to offer. This will be a short clinic with a 20- to 30-minute Q & A following.

The session is scheduled at 10:40 a.m. in Stevens 208 on the Newberg campus.

All students on meal plans are invited to join us in the Klages Dining Room this Thursday, Nov. 12, as we serve our annual Thanksgiving buffet. Traditional menu items include roasted tom turkey, smoked ham, candied yams, apple sage stuffing, assorted salads and lots of yummy desserts. Staff, faculty and non-meal plan students are also welcome to join us for $8 from 4:30 to 7 p.m.

Come and celebrate Quaker Heritage Week on the Newberg campus Wednesday, Nov. 11. Rich Swingle will present his play “A Clear Leading” Wednesday at 7 p.m. in Hoover 105. “A Clear Leading” is based on The Journal and Major Essays of John Woolman. Rich has performed in hundreds of venues in 19 nations, mostly in eight one-man plays he has written.

Tickets for “All is Calm, All is Bright,” the university’s Christmas concert, will go on sale in the Bruin Bookstore beginning Monday, Nov. 23. Employees may receive their complimentary ticket at that time. Tickets are available for purchase online now (with a service fee), but comp tickets are available only in the bookstore.

Because there are no “bad” seats in Bauman Auditorium, we will not make special allowances for employees wanting tickets early. Mark your calendar to get your tickets on  Nov. 23 to attend this wonderful Christmas event, to be presented on campus Dec. 11-12 and at Village Baptist Church in Beaverton Dec. 13. Specifics on the concert are available on the university’s website.

Aimee Smith (oboe/English horn) will present her senior degree recital at 7:30 p.m. this Friday, Nov. 13, in Bauman Auditorium. Also performing will be Matt Hill (trumpet), Barbara Stewart (piano) and Debi Huddleston (organ). Admission is free. Reception to follow.
