The NCAA Division III Women’s Basketball West Regional is set for March 5-6 in the Wheeler Sports Center. Puget Sound and Redlands play at 5 p.m., followed by George Fox and Louisiana College at 7 p.m. The regional final at 7 p.m. Saturday will feature the two Friday winners. Tickets are $6 for adults and $3 for children, students, and seniors 55 and up. All spectators must have a ticket.

On Wednesday, March 3, Holocaust survivor Ursula Bacon will speak at 7 p.m. in Hoover 103. Ursula fled Nazi Germany with her parents in 1939 and landed in Shanghai, China, along with more than 18,000 other Middle European Jews. The family spent most of the war years in a Japanese-controlled “Designated Area,” often referred to as the “Shanghai Ghetto.”

Calling all women! The community has spoken, and it is reflected in the university’s strategic plan, so plans are being made for a program that will nurture and develop the leadership potential of George Fox University women.

Speaker and author Shane Claiborne will be on the Newberg campus to speak three times on Monday, March 8.

Claiborne will speak in chapel at 10:40 a.m. in Bauman Auditorium and be available for a talk-back session afterwards in the Cap and Gown Room. He also will speak that afternoon from 4:40 to 5:35 p.m., when he presents on the topic “Counter Culture: Christians for a New Monasticism” at the Liberal Arts in Critical Issues forum in Hoover 105. Finally, he will speak from 9 to 10 p.m. in Bauman Auditorium.

Claiborne is the author of several books, including Jesus for President, Becoming the Answer to Our Prayers and The Irresistible Revolution. He also coauthored Follow Me to Freedom with Dr. John Perkins. A prominent Christian activist, Claiborne travels extensively speaking about peacemaking, social justice and Jesus. He is the founder of The Simple Way, a monastic community in Philadelphia.

The university’s women’s basketball team, ranked No. 5 in national polls, will open the NCAA Division III Tournament with a home game against Louisiana College this Friday, March 5, at 7 p.m. in Wheeler Sports Center.

Louisiana College is making its first NCAA tournament appearance after going 24-2. George Fox (25-2) enters as the Northwest Conference champion after defeating Puget Sound 77-51 in the conference finals last weekend.

Also playing Friday in Wheeler will be Puget Sound (23-4) and the University of Redlands (22-5), who will meet in the other West Regional semifinal at 5 p.m. The winners of Friday’s games will play in the same gym at 7 p.m. Saturday, March 6, for the right to advance to the tournament’s Sweet 16.

Ticket prices for both evenings are $6 for adults and $3 for students, children, and seniors 55 and older. Children age 2 and under are free. Tickets may be purchased in advance beginning Wednesday at the George Fox athletics department office in Wheeler. Northwest Conference and other passes are not valid for NCAA tournament games.

The Department of Performing Arts will present a Winter Choir Concert beginning at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, March 9, in Bauman Auditorium.

The concert will feature the Women’s Chorale, Vocal Jazz Ensemble, Chamber Singers and Concert Choir. The Concert Choir’s performance will be a preview of its performance at the regional American Choral Directors Association convention the following Saturday. Please come and support our choir students in the first choral concert of the semester.

Four music students will take to the Bauman Auditorium stage during the second week of March to present recitals. Come support these students as they perform. Admission is free.

• On Monday, March 8, Nick Luchterhand (saxophone) will present a junior recital at 7:30 p.m.

• On Thursday, March 11, Qingquan (Tara) Li will present a junior recital at 6 p.m., and Ben Tissell and James Pick will present a junior recital at 7:30 p.m.

As a reminder, three music students are presenting recitals in Bauman Auditorium this week. On Thursday, March 4, J Rourke (voice) will present a junior recital at 6 p.m., and Aimee Smith will present a senior degree composition recital at 7:30 p.m.

Also, on Friday, March 5, Emily Yarnold (voice) will present a senior degree recital at 7:30 p.m.

A free live interactive webinar for prospective language teachers is scheduled from 1 to 2 p.m. Thursday, March 4, in EHS 217. The session, entitled “ESL Vocabulary Instruction and Academic Preparation,” will focus on strategies to prepare students for mainstream classrooms.

The presenter will be Dr. Frances Boyd, a professor at Columbia University and coeditor of Longman’s NorthStar series. All interested faculty, students and staff are welcome to attend.

George Fox will host the Oregon Symphony for its 23rd appearance in Newberg. The concert is free to George Fox employees, a gift from retired George Fox board member Ken Austin and his wife, Joan, founders of A-dec. It is scheduled for 8 p.m. Saturday, March 13, in Bauman Auditorium.

The Austins have provided the university with a limited number of tickets for its employees. These tickets are separate from those to be issued by the Newberg Area Chamber of Commerce to the general public. George Fox employees (halftime and over) may pick up their tickets – limit two per employee – on a first-come, first-served basis starting Thursday, March 4, at 9 a.m. at the first-floor Information Center in Stevens Center. Phone reservations will not be taken except for employees at the Portland and Salem centers.

On Wednesday, March 10, beginning at 9 a.m., any remaining tickets (again, a limit of two per employee) will be available – also on a first-come, first-served basis – to those who sign up on a waiting list. If you find that you are not able to attend the concert, please return your tickets for another employee to use.

Tom Potiowsky, state economist for the state of Oregon, will speak at a School of Business speaker series event on Friday, March 12, at The Grand Hotel at Bridgeport in Tigard.

Potiowsky will speak from 7 to 9 a.m. on “The Big Dipper: Another Roller Coaster Ride for the Oregon Economy and You,” a session focusing on the economy and the process of recovery. The fee is $20, which includes a continental breakfast. Payment must be received by Monday, March 8.

Your e-mail should include the person’s name, job title, a concise but specific summary of this person’s  recent contributions (past 30 days or so) to the university, its students, and/or its employees (what was done, who was impacted, etc.), and any other information that you believe makes this person deserving of this award.

Please submit your nomination by Friday, March 12. The President’s Executive Leadership Team will then select the Employee(s) of the Month from the nominations submitted. The winners of both the February and March Employees of the Month will be announced at the all-employee meeting on Thursday, March 18, and each will receive a $100 gift card to The Allison.
