Remember to stop by Plant Services’ surplus equipment and inventory sale Thursday and Friday, April 15-16, in the Villa Academic Complex. The sale runs from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. both days and will include furnaces, appliances, duct work, cabinets, light fixtures, doors, laminate pieces, desks, panel walls, couches, tables, side chairs, bookshelves, and much more.

Urban Services’ scheduled trip to Salem this Friday, April 16, has been canceled. However, the group will be going to Portland Friday as scheduled, leaving from the Bruin Den at 5:30 p.m.

Are you interested in health care or medical missions? Come hear Devin Harrison, MD, present “Medical Missions: Eye Care in Africa,” at 4:15 p.m. Thursday, April 15, in Hoover 105. Dr. Harrison worked in Nigeria for two years caring for some of the world’s neediest patients, performing eye surgeries and training local doctors.

For his efforts, he received the 2008 American Academy of Ophthalmology Humanitarian Award. Contact Jim Smart if you have any questions.

If you are on the meal plan and intend to have dinner on-campus Friday night, please enter through the dish room entrance.  Since available seating is limited to the Foxhole, you will also be able to take your dinner dishes to your rooms or on-campus.

 You are welcome to purchase a ticket for Empty Bowls, however your meal plan will NOT count towards the Empty Bowls dinner.  Tickets are $10 at the door which includes a soup dinner, ceramic handmade bowl and a Mr. Bruin ticket.  Please join us in supporting Haiti!

Now that we have had an opportunity to see how the Blackboard Connect works, it is time for another message about how to update your information in MyGFU.

For this new system to work, it is essential for you to enter your personal cell phone number into MyGFU. Please follow these simple directions to enter your personal cell phone number:

• Login to your MyGFU account
• Click on SELF SERVICE
• Click on CAMPUS PERSONAL INFORMATION
• Click on PHONE NUMBERS
• On the PHONE TYPE pick list, choose the phone type you are registering.
• Type in your cell phone number
• Click SAVE
• If you need to add a number, first click on ADD A PHONE NUMBER
• Make sure you click SAVE after each change

Friday is last day to submit nominations for April Employee of the Month – our last employee of the month award this academic year.

Please send an e-mail to Peggy Kilburg (HR) if you would like to nominate a support staff member or administrator for April Employee of the Month. Your e-mail should include the person’s name, job title, a concise but specific summary of this person’s contribution(s) to the university, its students, and/or its employees in the past 30 days or so (what was done, who was impacted, etc.), and any other information that you believe makes this person deserving of this award.

Please submit your nomination by Friday, April 16. The President’s Executive Leadership Team will then select the Employee of the Month from the nominations submitted. The winner will be announced at the all-employee meeting on Thursday, April 22, and will receive a $100 gift card to The Allison.

Is there someone at George Fox who has made a difference in your academic career?  Someone who ignited a spark to make you want to learn or attend class or who has acted as a role model?  Take a moment to write an email, e-card, or traditional “thank you” card to that professor (or other person).  Try to be specific as you describe how this person has contributed to your life.

After 14 years at the seminary, Carole Spencer has accepted a faculty position at the Earlham School of Religion in Richmond, Ind. A farewell reception for her is scheduled from 4 to 6 p.m. Monday, April 26, at the seminary.

The university community is invited to a farewell reception for Richard Engnell (Communication Arts) from 3:30 to 5 p.m. Tuesday, April 20, in the Stevens Center (Duke) Atrium. Richard is retiring after serving at the university for 32 years.

Several English professors presented papers at the annual West Regional Conference on Christianity and Literature, held at California Baptist University in Riverside, Calif., March 25-27. Presentations were made by Kathleen Heininge (“Virginia Woolf and Her Quaker Aunt, Carolina Stephen”), Ed Higgins (“RE/Reading the Moral Cap on Alisoun’s Gat-tothe”), Melanie Springer Mock (“Love, Marriage, Horse and Carriage: The Family in Amish Romance Fiction”) and Abigail Rine (“Destabilizing the African American Patriarch: Alice Walker’s By the Light of My Father’s Smile”).

In addition, recent graduates Kohleun Adamson (Philosophy/Gender Studies) and Jeff Bilbro (English) presented papers, the former presenting “Mamma Knows Best Daddy’s Needs: Matriarchal Patriarchy in Trans-national Women’s Fiction” and the latter “Wendell Berry’s Good Work: Uniting Affection and Fidelity in The Memory of Old Jack.” Kohleun and Ed also read selections of their respective poetry in a session titled “Creative Writing: Poetry in Action.”

Paul Anderson (Religious Studies) will teach a free six-week series (April 18 to May 26) at Reedwood Friends Church (2901 S.E. Steele, in Portland) on “The Riddles of the Fourth Gospel.” Sessions meet from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Wednesdays and from 11 a.m. to noon on Sundays. Also, Marcus Borg will join Paul for a public dialogue on the “Gospels and Jesus in Bi-Optic Perspective” on May 19 and a special Saturday, May 22, session.

Laura Gifford (History) presented “Girded with a Moral and Spiritual Revival: The Christian Anti-Communism Crusade and Conservative Politics” at the annual meeting of the Organization of American Historians in Washington, D.C., April 7-10. She also had a chapter, “The Education of a Cold War Conservative: Anti-Communist Literature of the 1950s and 1960s,” published in Pressing the Fight: Print, Propaganda, and the Cold War (University of Massachusetts Press, 2010).

Mark Pothoff (Student Life) and his wife Olivia welcomed their third child, Aubrey Jasmine, on March 21. She was born at Providence St. Vincent Hospital in Portland and was 7 pounds, 9 ounces and 20 inches long. She joins two older sisters, Tenley (4) and Kaselyn (2).

Dwayne Astleford (Plant Services) and wife Marcia welcomed their eighth child, Rhysen (“Riley”) Paul, on April 7 at Providence Newberg Hospital. The baby was 6 pounds, 10 ounces and 19 3/4 inches long. Rhysen joins siblings Katey (18), Kendy (16), Emily (15), Anney (12), Hailey (9), Brady (7) and Colby (4).

Tax day is coming! Be sure you stop at Mail Services to have your tax letters weighed to determine if you have enough postage. The Internal Revenue Service will not accept them if there is not sufficient postage.

The campus community is invited to enjoy an adaptation of Quo Vadis: a Story of Christianity in Ancient Rome at 7:30 p.m. Friday, April 16, in the Villa Academic Complex’s Room 117 (there is a 7 p.m. prelude to the show).

This is the final performance of the English Language Institute’s Level D speech class under the direction of Ron Parrish. Ron will be saying “aloha” to us and moving to Hawaii.

Cinema and media communication students will showcase their work from the past year at the annual Fox Film Festival this Friday and Saturday, April 16-17.

Friday’s films will be shown beginning at 4:45 p.m. at the Cameo Theater in downtown Newberg. Tickets are $5 (cash only) and will be sold at the Cameo box office prior to the presentation. Films that night will showcase productions that do not contain copyrighted material.

On Saturday, a free showing is set for 6:30 p.m. in Bauman Auditorium and will feature films that do contain copyrighted material. An awards ceremony will follow Saturday’s session, and desserts will be served. Films featured the first night will not be repeated on the second night.

The Bruin Bookstore will host its annual PJ sale this Friday, April 16, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wear your pajamas to save on computer-related items, electronics, supplies, art products, clothing and gifts ranging from 10 to 50 percent off.
