Did you know that the food system is responsible for one-third of global greenhouse gas emissions? That means that our food choices have more of an impact on global warming than either the transportation or mining industries. Bon Appétit Management Company is trying to do something about it, and we’d like your help in getting the word out.

Low Carbon Diet Day will be held on Thursday, April 22, in conjunction with Earth Day. We have written our menus to teach guests the five principles of going on a low-carbon diet: You bought it, you eat it, so don’t waste food; make “seasonal and regional” your food mantra; move away from beef and cheese; don’t buy air-freighted food; if it’s processed and packaged, skip it.

Our students will continue to have extensive choices but will be encouraged to taste new items that are more climate-friendly than some regular features. Our menu Thursday will include:

• Individual Draper Valley Farms chicken pot pie with herb dumplings
• Veridian Farms Cannellini beans tossed with Organic Brothers’ mixed baby greens and leeks with fresh pesto
• Chicken tinga tostadas with braised chicken, chorizo, Yukon gold potatoes and pintos
• Honey soy marinated Columbia River steelhead with Kinsey Farms asparagus
• Three different pizzas made without cheese, including barbecue chicken, Oregon shrimp and “meatlovers” with roasted leeks and marscapone
• Willamette Valley Farms blackberry rhubarb cobbler

Guests, staff, faculty and non-board plan students are more than welcome to join us for only $6.50 per person. Lunch is served from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

These are the final home sports events of the academic year for the Bruin teams. Live stats and KFOX radio Internet webcasts will be provided for all three baseball games this weekend.

The men’s and women’s golf teams will be participating in the Northwest Conference Championships Saturday and Sunday, April 24-25, at the Heron Lakes Golf Courses in north Portland. Tee times are set for 10 a.m. Saturday and 9 a.m. Sunday. The women’s golf team, now ranked No. 6 in the nation, will host a “tailgater” party in the Heron Lakes parking lot Saturday from 9 to 11 a.m. for all family, friends, and supporters of the team.

Our “Empty Bowls: A Night for Haiti” event last Friday raised approximately $15,000 for our brothers and sisters in Haiti. Another $3,000 was raised at the Mr. Bruin Pageant, bringing the overall fundraising total to about $18,000.

We still have about a table’s worth of bowls left in the ceramics lab that need to be cleared out so we can clean up for finals. We have declared the remaining bowls “seconds” and offer them on a first-come, first-served basis at $5 per bowl. Stop by the lab and pay at the art office across the drive.

As of noon on Tuesday, all proceeds from the sale of seconds will go to the Swaziland May Serve team, which is still short of funds needed for their imminent departure.

The application deadline for some ASC Communications positions have been extended through the end of the school year.  There are positions available on The Crescent, KFOX, L’Ami, the Photography team, and the Bruin Directory.  We are looking for students interested in building their skills in sales, writing, layout, photography, audio, and other areas.  Applications are available in the Bruin’s Den.

This past September, the Student Life Office offered a nine (9) hour self defense workshop for interested students.  However, in light of the sexual assault that occurred at an on-campus apartment on Tuesday, April 13th, we would like to assess student and employee interest in taking a two (2) hour self defense workshop in the next couple weeks (date and time yet to be determined).  If this interests you, please contact the Student Life Office by Thursdasy, April 22th at 5:00 p.m.  We will also continue to offer the nine (9) hour self defense class in September for interested students and employees.

If you qualify for summer storage (meaning you live over 300 miles away) and would like to store your bicycle for the summer please take the following action:

• Place your bicycle in the Coffin basement bike storage area and securely lock it to a bike rack.
• Attach a pink storage label to your bicycle and make sure it has your name and contact information on it. Storage labels are available from your RA.

If you are living on campus for the summer and need to store your bike, you can also place it in Coffin. However, you will need to have a storage label placed on your bicycle for the month of May.

If you do not qualify for summer storage you need to take your bicycle home with you.  

After May 10th any bike in Coffin without a storage label will be donated to charity.

This is a reminder that an all-employee meeting is scheduled from 3:45 to 5 p.m. Thursday, April 22, in Hoover 105.

Between eight and 10 volunteers are needed to usher at the baccalaureate service on Saturday, May 1, in Bauman Auditorium. Responsibilities include welcoming guests, handing out programs, and guiding seniors. If interested, please e-mail the Office of Spiritual Life by Friday, April 23, at 5 p.m.

The university community is invited to hear Matt Meyer (Cinema and Media Communication) speak on “Time Travel on $10 a Day.” This feature film project, made last summer by Matt and a group of George Fox students, looks at high school violence and the efficacy of prayer after the fact. Matt will show film clips and talk about working with these students on a “shoestring” budget.

Come and enjoy a free night of laughs and entertainment while improvisation class teams compete in theatre games at 7:30 p.m. this Friday, April 23, in Wood-Mar Auditorium. Come take a study break and laugh at us!

Oregon Voters’ Pamphlets for the May 18 Oregon Primary Election are available for students and employees. They can be found on the table in the hallway at Mail Services.

Notifications of Financial Aid for next year have gone out to many students.  Are you still waiting to receive yours?    This could be due to documents the Student Financial Services office still is in need of to calculate your award.  Please check online at www.mygfu.georgefox.edu within your to do list.  Check to see if tax forms and a verification worksheet will be required from you and your family.  If so, verification will need to be complete before your financial aid is calculated and available for you to view.  Also while online, pay close attention to any other documents listed such as signature requirements or other items as requested by  FAFSA.  If you have any questions, please contact your financial aid counselor.

At the end of every school year, many students leave behind good, usable items, including blankets, clothing, kitchen supplies, small appliances, radios, room decorations, little tables, etc. In an effort to keep the dumpsters from overflowing and to be better stewards of the resources, Plant Services initiated Phase II. We are happy to receive anything that students do not want to take home.

Barrels will be placed in the lobbies of the dorms and central living areas, as well as on the porches of Weesner, Beals, Hoskins, Munn, Wilder, Villa Road Houses and Newlin Apartments. Please do not donate damaged or soiled items or place trash in the barrels labeled “Phase II.” There are drop boxes for your trash located strategically on campus. By law, computers, monitors and TVs cannot go in the trash. They can be placed beside the barrels (please note if broken).

The items gathered are sorted and made available to student summer help and staff, but most of the items are given to different organizations in the local area, including Rescue Mission, Goodwill, unwed mothers’ homes, Love Inc., etc. Donated items will be stored at the Villa Academic Center’s rear section (500 Villa Road) and will be available to employees and summer students May 5.

Please use these barrels as you prepare to leave at the end of school. Have a great summer and the Lord bless you as you go!

Spiritual Life is now accepting applications for next year’s “Spi.L. Assistants” (SLA’s). 

 SLA’s take on the opportunity to build bridges between students and spiritual formation opportunities within the context of your living area relationships. This is a chance to help cultivate the spiritual life of the living area by offering regular group spiritual formation opportunities (i.e. prayer/worship gatherings, Bible studies, floor meals/bonfires, etc.) while serving and learning as a co-pastoral presence with your Resident Assistant.

 SLA’s both report to and receive leadership support from the Spi.L. Chaplain of their Living Area as well as specialized training classes with the Director for Spiritual Formation.
