Christee Wise is transferring from Career Services to the undergraduate teacher education department, where she will work as an administrative assistant III.

Joel Perez (Student Life) presented some of his doctoral findings at the Association of Christians in Student Development conference at Messiah College in June. The workshop title was “Why Diversity at a Christian College?”

Sue Newell (Social Work) accepted a position on the board of directors for All God’s Children International, an adoptions and women and child development organization, and attended the group’s board meeting in Chicago in June.

John Gorlorwulu (School of Business) was selected for a one-year appointment as an economic advisor for Africa with USAID, a government agency that provides economic and humanitarian assistance worldwide. He will be taking a leave of absence this academic year to serve in that post.

Paul Anderson (Religious Studies) spent the summer as a visiting professor at Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz (JGU) in Germany. Up to the end of August, Paul will do research and teach three seminars at Mainz University. He recently took part in the international summer school, “The Historical Jesus – A ‘Fourth Quest’ for Jesus?” at the Faculty of Protestant Theology at JGU Aug. 2-5. In addition to teaching at Mainz University, Anderson has been lecturing at universities in the area, including Nijmegen, Marburg and Münster. Also, his reflections on his dialogue with Marcus Borg at Reedwood Friends Church in May, “A Fourth Quest For Jesus … So What, and How So?,” were posted on the Bible and Interpretation website. In addition, his essay “An Apology for Authentic Spirituality” was published in the latest issue of Quaker Religious Thought.

Ed Higgins (English) published a flash-fiction piece, “Texas Hold ’em,” in the July 2010 issue of the e-zine Short, Fast, and Deadly.

Nate (Tilikum) and Lissa (Admissions) Forbes welcomed a daughter, Charlotte Ocean, on July 7. She was born at Sunnyside Hospital in Clackamas and weighed 7 pounds, 12 ounces while measuring 20 ½ inches long.

Jennifer Macnab (Office of the Registrar) and her husband, Andrew Brost, welcomed a daughter, Anna Elizabeth Brost, on July 11. She was born at St. Vincent’s Hospital and weighed 7 pounds, 2 ounces while measuring 20.5 inches long. Anna is the couple’s first child.

Patsy Engle, a faculty member of 12 years in the MAT program and 10 years as an adjunct professor in English, passed away from her battle with stomach cancer on Aug. 5. Please be in prayer for Patsy’s husband, Frank, their two sons, Tim and Aaron, and their extended family. A celebration of life service for Patsy is scheduled for 2 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 12, in Bauman Auditorium. If you would like to send a card, the family’s address is: 2330 N. Main St., Newberg.

In order to get ready for the new school year, the Bruin Den will be closed Aug. 7-22. We will reopen on Monday, Aug. 23, from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. See you then.

Two questions concerning early America – “Did America have a Christian founding?” and “Did the founders want separation of church and state?” – will be addressed at a summer symposium hosted on the Newberg campus on Friday, Aug. 13.

Daniel L. Dreisbach, a professor in the Department of Law, Justice and Society at American University who studied philosophy as a Rhodes Scholar at Oxford, will present a lecture, “Thomas Jefferson and the ‘Wall of Separation’ Between Church and State,” from 6 to 7 p.m. in Hoover 105. There is no charge to attend.

Prior to the lecture, a barbecue and book-signing session are scheduled from 4:30 to 6 p.m. in the quad. The cost for the barbecue is $13 per person. Joining Dreisbach at the book signing will be Mark David Hall (Herbert Hoover Distinguished Professor of Political Science), a frequent collaborator with Dreisbach. The two coauthored The Sacred Rights of Conscience and teamed with Jeffry H. Morrison to write The Forgotten Founders on Religion and Public Life and The Founders on God and Government. Copies of the books will be available for sale at the signing session.

George Fox is expecting a big group of new international students this fall (approximately 60). We are looking for about 30 families who would be willing to have two international students stay in their homes the nights of Aug. 18-26.

Families are asked to provide breakfast and dinner. Lunch will be provided on campus. We also ask families to provide transportation to George Fox between 8 and 8:30 a.m. and pick students up at approximately 5 p.m. Host families will receive a stipend to help defray some of the costs.

IT is offering a webinar on the FoxTALE-MyGFU integration. Join the webinar session from any computer on Monday, Aug. 9, between 10 and 10:30 a.m. Pacific Time. Space is still available, so sign up on this RSVP form.

This integration allows faculty to activate course sites. Students will automatically be enrolled. For fall 2010, faculty have the option of using the new system or continuing with the usual process. The new system will be fully implemented in the spring of 2011.

Before Aug. 9, visit the iVocalize support website and go through the four sections available on the Getting Started page. Be sure to run the system requirements test available on this page. The login information for the training session will be sent to you via e-mail prior to the event.

Registration is still open for the university’s fourth Motorcycle Rally, scheduled Saturday, Aug. 14. The event features both a long (185-215 miles) and short (110-115 miles) ride, with the former traveling through the coast range and the latter winding through the hills and valleys of Yamhill County.

We have an excess of office supplies (and binders) from our recent remodel and want to offer them up to the university’s students, staff and faculty. Please stop by the registrar’s office on the first floor of the Stevens Center and see if there’s anything you can use. Stop by anytime Wednesday through Friday of this week.

The fall 2010 George Fox University Employee Community Meeting is scheduled from 8 to 11 a.m. on Friday, Aug. 20. Attendance is required.

Breakfast will be served in Klages Dining Room from 8 to 8:35 a.m. The meeting will follow in Bauman Auditorium, starting with worship at 8:45 a.m. led by Bill Jolliff.

For those at the university’s regional sites, the meeting will be available for viewing at stream.georgefox.edu/live/commmtg.sdp. In addition, a chat room has been set up to allow for interaction. A video recording of the event will be available in the days following the meeting at itunesu.georgefox.edu.

As of Friday, Print Services has acquired five Xerox ColorQubes that will allow campus users to make color copies and create scans that can be sent to e-mail. Scanning to e-mail is free to all users. Black and white copies are 10 cents per side, while color copies are 20 cents per side.

As with all of our walk-up copiers, activation cards may be purchased from IT or from the library’s front desk. The machines are located in the Hoover second-floor lobby, the second-floor mezzanine in the Stevens Center, the MLRC’s first-floor copier center, and the VAC lobby. The fifth machine is in Print Services, where customers will be able to print from their own computers, student kiosk computers, or copy and then make payment to the staff.

Please note that the Xerox ColorQube will print black and white or color, so be sure to designate what you want. Also, this is “solid ink” technology (crayon), so an item printed/copied from the ColorQube will not be able to go through a heat-based process (lamination).
