Juniors and seniors are eligible to apply for a mission-learning trip to Nicaragua. PSYC 399: X-Cultural Experience in Nicaragua is an integration trip to serve and learn from at-risk girls rescued from a life of poverty on the city dump. An all-employee meeting is scheduled from 3:30 to 5 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 30, in Hoover 105.

George Fox Evangelical Seminary will host author Scot McKnight for a one-day seminar, “In the Beginning was the Gospel,” from 9 a.m. to noon Wednesday, Sept. 29, in Room 155 at the Portland Center. The event is part of the seminary’s Ministry in Contemporary Culture series.

McKnight, author of The Blue Parakeet: Rethinking How You Read the Bible, will discuss “the many differences between how we ‘evangelize’ and how the apostles evangelized.” He poses such questions as “Do we need to re-examine the meaning of ‘gospel’?”, “Did Jesus preach the gospel or were the apostles the first to preach the gospel?”, and “How important is the cross to the gospel?”

The seventh annual Selah women’s seminar is scheduled from 9 a.m. to 4:15 p.m. this Saturday, Sept. 25, in Bauman Auditorium. Speakers Vicki Norris and Sarah Thomas Baldwin will share on topics related to the conference’s theme, “It’s Time to Simplify: Discover the Biblical Truth That Less is More.” The event will encourage you to live simply, prioritize your highest values, and spend your time and resources intentionally.

Beginning in the fall of 2011, we will be adding a common book component to the First Year Experience program. In preparation, we would like to solicit book recommendations from as many people in our community as possible. Please take some time to recommend one or more books for this program.

After we receive recommendations, the committee will begin the task of narrowing the list down to three to five books that we will all read. The decision will be made by the end of February and announced in March. The criteria will include the following three things:

• Must meet the diversity outcome for the First Year Seminar program, which includes the following:

– Socioeconomic

– Race/ethnicity

– Gender

– Religious

– International

• Books must not be more than 500 pages

• Should spark meaningful dialogue

Calling all leaders!

I wanted to get out a quick little note about Serve Trips. Right now we are in the process of confirming the locations for Winter Serve. As many of you know, there is an application process for those interested in participating. This is also true for those interested in leading a trip. (Applications will be out in October).

HOWEVER, I wanted to let you know that if you are at all interested in leading a trip this coming winter I would love to hear from you! It would be a great opportunity for me to engage in some conversation with you about your potential as a leader and who you would be interested in leading with before the actual applications are out.

I will be looking forward to seeing who God draws out and how He puts our teams together this year!

Serve Trip Coordinator

Tickets are now on sale for a concert featuring internationally acclaimed pianist Valentina Lisitsa at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 30, in Bauman Auditorium.

The performance, which will include a selection of Chopin and Liszt pieces, marks a return to George Fox for Lisitsa, who performed at the fourth annual Bösendorfer Artist Concert Series in February. She is making this appearance to benefit the university’s Friends of Music program.

Custodial services welcomes Paul Becker as a halftime employee at the Portland Center. He worked for seven years as a senior programmer analyst for Fred Meyer/Kroger, and before that, supported sales data collection as a senior consultant for the company in the early 2000s. He has more than 23 years of experience in the information systems industry. Paul is currently earning a bachelor’s degree in business administration from Washington State University and holds AA degrees in data processing and general studies from Bellevue Community College.

Brent Weaver (Performing Arts) is traveling to the Phoenix area Sept. 24-26 for the premiere performances of his commissioned work Imaginary Scenes for saxophone quartet and electronic sounds. The work was commissioned by the Joseph Wytko Saxophone Quartet, who also will perform the work at Chapman University Sept. 28, on a North American tour this fall and winter, then in Paris, Brussels and Warsaw in the spring of 2011. The group also plans to include the new work on its next CD, being recorded next summer.

Residence Life and the Newberg Fire Department will be facilitating the annual “Burn on the Quad” event after chapel on Wednesday, Sept. 22, at 11:35 a.m. Come watch and learn about safety on campus!

Most of us don’t worry too much about a writing mistake or two. It’s what we have to say that really matters, right?

Well, yes – and no.

The bad news is that too many editing errors can keep our readers from taking us – and our ideas – seriously. The good news is that most of our errors are relatively easy to fix, once we figure out which ones we’re prone to make.

On Tuesday, Sept. 21, Bill Jolliff (English) will identify the 10 errors that professors are most likely to mark on student work, and he’ll demonstrate how to fix them. The session begins at 6:30 p.m. in Stevens 208. Faculty, please encourage students to attend.

Volunteers are needed to help shoot six short (3-5 minute) sports shows throughout the course of the semester. The video shoots will last roughly an hour.
