Once a year, Bon Appétit issues an “Eat Local Challenge” to all of our chefs. On Tuesday, Sept. 28, come to Klages Dining Room between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. and enjoy a lunch that is made completely of ingredients from within a 150-mile radius of the café. This act, while seemingly simple, has far-reaching implications.

Local farmers, who use more sustainable growing practices, act as stewards of the land. By buying from local growers, we can all help support sustainable farming practices that nourish and replenish the local land rather than stripping it. We have the power to ensure that the food we buy is produced in a manner that steers away from pesticides, hormones and antibiotics.

This year’s menu includes:

Soups: Roasted corn bisque and beefy tomato broth with fresh spinach

Entrees: Trager-smoked Carlton Farms pulled pork sliders; oven-roasted blue and Butterball potatoes with summer squash; marinated Draper Valley grilled chicken with local melons and jalapeño sofrito; simple greens with blueberry vinaigrette

Hand food: Oregon albacore tuna tostadas; yellow tomato criolla-roasted fingerling potatoes; crème fresh cabbage saw and pimento d’Espelette

Vegetarian: Ratatouille-stuffed Oregon star tomatoes and cranberry bean and corn succotash

Expo: Leafy spinach salad with pickled Red Zeppelin onions, Yamhill County fried mushrooms, poached blueberries, Fraga Farms chipotle goat cheese and Blossom vinegars honey vinaigrette

Pizza: Pear and gorgonzola or fresh tomato and butcher shop jalapeno cheddar summer sausage

Sweets: Ace High apple bars with Melcher’s Farm hazelnuts; Marylhill Orchards peach cobbler

This year the Lip Sync Competition has moved into the fall semester in order to get ready for the transition when homecoming moves to the fall because of football. So start thinking about ideas for your act. Auditions will most likely be held at the end of October or beginning of November!

For those of you looking forward to the Tent of Meeting, we would like to apologize, but we feel it necessary to cancel because there were so few hours covered in the schedule. We understand that it is later in the semester than in previous years and that people (ourselves included) are really busy with projects, papers and mid-terms. Our heart, and we hope yours, in this event was to gather around the Word of God, to hear His-Story in context, and to celebrate and affirm the importance of all of God’s Word (even the parts we don’t read very often) to our faith journey. While there may not be a tent in the Quad, we are still a community and His Word is still relevant. So we would like to present this challenge to you: What will you do with God’s word this week?

The university community is invited to Paul Otto’s lecture tracing the use of wampum in ceremony, trade, currency and friendship. Please join us at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 5, in Hoover 105 and learn the history of these “Beads of Power.”

Faculty, please encourage students who might be interested to attend this week’s ARC workshop. On Wednesday, Sept. 29, Rick Muthiah (Learning Support Services) will present “Effective Procrastination: How to Use Your Time Well,” designed to help students differentiate between healthy and problematic procrastination. Rick also will discuss methods for students to use their time effectively to achieve learning goals.

The session begins at 6:30 p.m. in Stevens 208.

College is a place of shifting priorities and competing demands. Sometimes waiting until the last minute enables you to maximize your time; other times, procrastination results in shoddy work and poor grades. Rick Muthiah (Learning Support Services) will address healthy vs. problematic procrastination along with methods for using time effectively to achieve your learning goals.

The George Fox Medallion Search is back, and this year we aren’t waiting until April!

Taking place the week of Sept. 27-Oct. 1, students will once again have the opportunity to take place in this exciting campus treasure hunt. With the winner receiving a $200 cash reward.

A custom-engraved medallion will be hidden somewhere outside on the George Fox University Newberg campus. It will not be buried and no structures need to be disturbed or climbed to find it.

Starting Monday morning, One-clue revealing the Medallion’s location will be released each day by 10 a.m. on the Bruin Heritage Society Facebook page, facebook.com/BruinHeritage.

Spiritual life is sponsoring a relationship retreat on October 22nd and 23rd. The focus of this retreat is “building a healthy relationship” where Cary and Tracey Balzer, our guest speakers, will be talking about fostering good communication. This retreat is open to dating, engaged, and married couples. The cost is $30 per couple (cash or check – made payable to GFU) and can be paid at the Spiritual Life Office. Join us to hear author Shauna Niequist as she speaks in chapel Wednesday,  Sept. 29. Following chapel at 11:30 a.m., she will be signing copies of her books at the Bruin Bookstore from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Her books, Bittersweet and Cold Tangerines, will be available at a discount in the store. Refreshments will be provided.

That night, Niequist also will be speaking at a special evening chapel beginning at 9 p.m. in Hoover 105.

Join us at North Valley Friends Church this Saturday, Sept. 25, to help build and establish the Newberg peace trail. Visit the project website to learn of the vision and plan. It is “a place for peace, to learn about peace, to celebrate peace” put together by North Valley Friends and the surrounding Newberg community, including the university’s Center for Peace and Justice.

You will be working on putting the language and quote boards on the peace poles, preparing the ground and building the forms for the bench pads, and working on the path leading from the walking trail to the labyrinth. There may also be space for you to assist with labyrinth design.

We will work until around mid-afternoon, depending on how many people assist with the project. Lunch will be provided to all of the workers.

…complete with Psalms, psalters, holy listening, singing, fires-in-pit, Smores made from scratch, and maybe even some rain-dancing (or dancing in the rain!).

If heavy rains ensue prior to 9pm, we will relocate to Cap & Gown by 9:15pm.

We’re pleased to announce that, starting this week, we began offering an express line in the Bruin Den for those students, staff and faculty who would like to quickly purchase a salad or sandwich and a bottled beverage. We’re opening this line from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. daily, and at this time we’re set up to only accept cash.

If you’re in a hurry or just want something quick to take back to your office or room, this is a great way to beat the lines. We’re excited to offer this service, and we hope enough people will take advantage of it so that we can make it permanent. If you have any questions or suggestions, please let us know!

The Villa Academic Complex will host a candidates’ forum featuring hopefuls for two state House races and the Yamhill County commission seat. The event, hosted by the Christian Chamber of Commerce of the Northwest, is scheduled from 7:30 to 9 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 28. There is no charge to attend, although attendees have the option of purchasing an $8 catered breakfast.
