The university community is invited to Paul Otto’s lecture tracing the use of wampum in ceremony, trade, currency and friendship. Please join us at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 5, in Hoover 105 and learn the history of these “Beads of Power.”

Interested in learning more about Chinese language, history and culture? Beginning this Thursday, Sept. 30, the International/Cultural House will host an educational and fun meeting dedicated to Chinese culture. Learn more about our Chinese students and the activities they enjoy. Try learning some Chinese. The meeting is scheduled for every other Thursday from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m., and all are welcome.

This Friday, Oct. 1, Sue O’Donnell (Psychology) will present a workshop, “Using APA Format Effectively,” beginning at 10:40 a.m. in Hoover 105. The session will cover American Psychological Association citation and reference formatting, along with several guidelines for writing in APA style.

The IJM chapter at GFU deals in large part with the issue of sex-trafficking on both a global and local scale, and what steps we can do to combat it. Two major focuses of the chapter is prayer, as well as how we can get involved in the community.

The Northwest Yearly Meeting of Friends and the university’s Center for Peace and Justice would like to invite all students, faculty and staff to this weekend’s conference: “Christians and Immigration in a Land of Contradictions: A Call to Biblical Action.”

On Friday and Saturday, join with other concerned Christians as we educate ourselves about immigration in the United States. Together, we will examine details of immigration law and history, hearing firsthand stories about the immigrant experience and be inspired by fellow Christians working to share the love of Christ with our immigrant brothers and sisters. Although there is no charge for those from George Fox, participants are asked to register online at this link.

Tickets are still available for this Thursday’s concert featuring internationally acclaimed pianist Valentina Lisitsa in Bauman Auditorium. The performance begins at 7:30 p.m.

Lisitsa will play a selection of Chopin and Liszt pieces in celebration of their 200th birthdays (Chopin was born in 1810 and Liszt in 1811). She is making the appearance to benefit the Friends of Music program, the main resource fund for the university’s Bösendorfer concert series.

Student supervisors: The first pay day of the new school year for student employees is Friday, Oct. 15. For us to meet this deadline, we need your students’ September time sheets by Tuesday, Oct. 5, by 5 p.m.

Please be sure the student’s name, ID number and cost center number is legible on each one. Also, don’t forget to sign them and be sure the students did as well. Please do not send students to HR to sign their time sheets.

If you still have paperwork for new or returning student employees, please get it turned in as soon as possible.

For the past few years, George Fox  has utilized FOXALERT as a method of notifying the Newberg campus faculty, staff and students in the event of a campus-wide emergency. Each semester we update the FOXALERT database with your current contact information that we download from MyGFU. For this system to work, it is vital that you take a few minutes to update your contact information.

If you have not done so recently, please update your contact information by signing into MyGFU. Following are the steps to take:

• Login to your MyGFU account
• Click on SELF SERVICE
• Click on CAMPUS PERSONAL INFORMATION
• Click on PHONE NUMBERS
• On the PHONE TYPE pick list, choose the phone type you are registering.
• Type in your contact information
• Click SAVE
• If you need to add a number, first click on ADD A PHONE NUMBER
• Make sure you click SAVE after each change

In the near future, we will test FOXALERT as well as give you information on opting in or out to receive text messages. Your safety is very important to us. Please work with us to provide you with timely information should an emergency arise.
