Come join the fun at the Cultural Fair Tuesday, Nov. 16, from 4 to 6 p.m. in the Bruin Den (new location this year). George Fox students will be sharing their cultures through music, dance, videos, pictures, crafts, games, and, of course, the all-time favorite: food. All students and George Fox employees are invited.
Correction to Cultural Celebration Week schedule: The Invisible Children “Face-to-Face” Tour event is not Wednesday, but is Tuesday, Nov. 16. This event is co-hosted by the Center for Peace and Justice and Center for Global Studies and Invisible Children. The evening will include a showing of the 40-minute film Go!, which documents three American students who traveled to Uganda, met students their age, and through these relationships saw their lives changed.
In addition, two Ugandans, James and Robert, who have lived through the war and have been involved with Invisible Children’s partner school program, will share their stories and address ways in which students can respond and participate in advocating on behalf of northern Uganda’s children. This will include a talk-back session with a question-and-answer time following the film.

The university’s Symphonic Band and the Newberg Community Band will perform a free concert at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 18, in Bauman Auditorium.
The Symphonic Band will perform Dies Natalis, by Howard Hanson; Ave Maria (Angelus Domini), by Franz Biebl, arranged by Robert C. Cameron; and Commando March, by Samuel Barber. The band is directed by Pat Vandehey. The Hanson piece is a small preview of the upcoming Christmas Concert.
The Newberg Community Band, directed by Dick Elliott, will perform Loudoun Praises, by Brian Balmages; Colonial Airs and Dances, by Robert Jager; and Symphonic Fanfare, by Mark Camphouse.

These are the only home games until Jan. 8. Ticket prices for George Fox basketball games are $6 for adults and $3 for non-GFU students and seniors 55 and over. Children 6 and under who are not in school are free. George Fox faculty, staff and students are admitted free with valid university ID; the ID covers immediate family members for all employees.

The university will host a breakfast featuring Kirk Petersen, regional director in Oregon for Alpha, a course on the basics of the Christian faith, from 7:30 to 9 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 23, in the Villa Academic Complex.
The event, hosted by the Christian Chamber of Commerce of the Northwest, is free for chamber members who R.S.V.P. at cccnw.net. It costs $8 for non-members and those who R.S.V.P., and $10 at the door.
Petersen helps churches effectively connect with people in their communities by running Alpha courses. He has been a pastor for 17 years, working most of that time directly with middle and high school students. He is a graduate of Biola University and earned a master’s degree from Western Seminary in Portland.

The Battle for the Blue Goose (powderpuff football tournament) sign-ups are available on the intramural sports bulletin board between the two windows of the bookstore. Anyone interested in participating as players or coaches can sign up there. We are particularly in need of junior women to sign up to fill out their team’s roster.
The event takes place on Sunday, Dec. 5, with games beginning at 1:30 p.m. and the championship game to follow at 2:45 p.m. on Colcord Field (the track field).

Barbara is senior vice president and market executive of U.S. Trust, Bank of America Private Wealth Management, where she has been employed for 37 years. She has management responsibility for two offices in Portland and Vancouver. Barbara has served on the university board of trustees for 17 years and also participates on boards for Transitional Youth, United Way Campaign, Medical Teams International, and Employers for Excellence in Education.
From her wealth of experience, Barbara will share with us her leadership journey and thoughts about mentoring and being mentored.

Continuing the practice begun last year to approve holiday schedules two years in advance, the 2012-13 holiday schedule has been finalized and approved. It is now available for employees to see at this link.
This link takes you to a three-page document that contains the current year’s holiday schedule on page 1, the 2011-12 holiday schedule on page 2, and the 2012-13 schedule on page 3. These holiday schedules are being provided well in advance to assist in the long-term planning of academic programs and calendars.
