Bruin Heritage Society and Alumni Relations invite all students to George Fox University’s Traditional Christmas on the Quad  on Friday, Dec. 3 at 7 p.m. Join other students and alumni for our annual evening of caroling by candlelight and a reading of the Christmas story under the clock tower.

Caroling will begin under the clock tower at 7 p.m. Warm drinks and cookies will be provided, with ASC-sponsored events following the caroling.

The Health and Counseling Center has free doses of Gardasil vaccine for women ages 18-26. This vaccine helps prevent HPV infection and cervical cancer. It is usually $145 per dose and is a series of three shots over six months.

Reid Kisling (Registrar) has accepted the position of senior pastor at Grace Baptist Church in Newberg. He will continue in his position at the university through the end of the semester, beginning his new job on Jan. 1. He also will continue to serve in some capacity as an adjunct faculty member and plans to remain involved in higher education as a senior consultant with the American Association of Collegiate Registrars and Admissions Officers.

After 25 and a half years of service to the university, Karon Bell will retire on Jan. 7. Karon has served in a number of capacities, including as controller, director of financial affairs, director of financial and administrative services, assistant VP of financial services and her current job as assistant VP of administrative services in financial affairs. She plans to travel, possibly serve on missions trips, catch up on her reading, and learn a foreign language. A farewell reception for Karon will be scheduled in the coming weeks.

Rick Muthiah (Student Life) was a co-presenter of a session, “Uncovering the Heart in Higher Education,” at the Professional and Organizational Network in Higher Education (POD) National Conference in St. Louis in November. The session included experiential activities to explore faculty members’ ability to express their worldviews within their workplace.

Reid Kisling (Registrar) presented a session at the 20th annual American Association of Collegiate Registrars and Admissions Officers’ Strategic Enrollment Management Conference in Nashville in early November. The title of his presentation was “Does Higher Ed Need a New Advising Framework?” Reid also led several other sessions at the conference and continues to serve as a senior consultant with AACRAO consulting.

Kathi Gatlin and Melissa Thomas (Registrar) presented a session, “Do You Have an Advising Philosophy: How We Developed One,” at the 2010 annual conference of the Pacific Association of Collegiate Registrars and Admissions Counselors (PACRAO) in Calgary, Alberta, in early November.

Kent Yinger’s (Seminary) book, The New Perspective on Paul: An Introduction, has just been published by Wipf & Stock.

Paul Anderson (Religious Studies) delivered three papers in Atlanta recently, in conjunction with the national Society of Biblical Literature meetings. “The Community that Raymond Brown Left Behind – Reflections on the Dialectical Johannine Situation” was delivered at a symposium on the Epistles of John at the McAffee School of Theology; “Johannine Contributions to Later Trinitarian Discussions in the Early Church” was delivered in the Development of Early Trinitarian Theology Consultation of SBL; and “The Dialogical Autonomy of the Fourth Gospel: A Theologically Engaged Jesus Tradition and Implications for Jesus Research” was delivered at a joint session of the John, Jesus, and History Group and the Historical Jesus Section of SBL. Paul completed his six years as co-chair of the John, Jesus, and History Group, which over that period has featured 117 papers from scholars around the world and has been one of the two or three best attended among the 160 sections and groups at SBL.

May 2012 course proposals for the Cross-cultural Study (Serve and Learning in Community) and Cross-cultural Experiences (Juniors Abroad) programs are due soon. These are undergraduate courses, thus this is primarily for full-time undergraduate faculty; however, exceptions have been made for graduate faculty if they team up with an undergraduate faculty member.

To show support for 43 volunteer public health workers who were illegally arrested in the Philippines, George Fox student leaders will wear yellow T-shirts Wednesday that match those worn by the prisoners.

All those wearing shirts are asked to attend chapel. Afterward, at 11:30 a.m., we will gather around the Centennial Tower for a few minutes of prayer for the Morong 43. The shirts will then be passed on to other community members, and the passing on of shirts will continue every day throughout the week.

The campus community is welcome to join in Wednesday’s events. They are being organized to support the volunteer public health workers illegally arrested in the Philippines in February – victims of political impunity and injustice.

The admissions office is looking to hire an admissions counseling intern for spring semester. This is a professional internship that can be done either for credit or for pay. Applications are available in the admissions office (second floor of Stevens Center) and due on Monday, Dec. 6.

In response to an incident in which 43 volunteer public health workers were illegally arrested in the Philippines, George Fox has scheduled events next week to bring awareness to the prisoners’ plight.

A brief version of the story will be told in Monday’s chapel, and those who wish to learn more or tangibly respond are invited to a gathering Monday, Nov. 29, at 7 p.m. in the Pennington lobby. The meeting will provide a more extensive explanation of the situation of the Morong 43 and give attendees an opportunity to sign letters to both the president of the Philippines and Oregon state senators.

In addition, student leaders will wear yellow T-shirts that match those worn by the prisoners, with each of the 43 shirts on campus representing an individual prisoner. On Wednesday after chapel, these 43 will gather around the Centennial Tower for a few minutes of prayer for the Morong 43. All are welcome to join. After this, the 43 shirts will be passed on to other community members. This passing on of shirts will continue every day throughout the week.

The events are to support the volunteer public health workers illegally arrested in the Philippines in February – victims of political impunity and injustice. Melanie Newell (Center of Peace and Justice) had the opportunity to visit with some of the prisoners last month. When asked what can be done to help, they answered, “Tell people about us. Our hope lies in those who hear our story, those who know about us.”

A second training session for the new enhanced financial reports has been scheduled, as the first session is now full. The second session is set from 10 to 11 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 1, in Stevens 307.

This session will give a quick overview of the new reports and how to run them. There will be time for questions and individual assistance. You will need to R.S.V.P. soon to confirm your attendance, as space is limited. (R.S.V.P. to Debbie Cash, who will be doing the training).

There are harmful things being put into our waters every day. Whether it is on purpose or on accident, it is not all right. We can take action to prevent this. After Thanksgiving Break, there will be a Willamette River Clean-Up where we will go and do our part to protect our environment and community from further harm. Everything will be provided, including transportation, trash bags, gloves, plus coffee and donuts. Join us and Be The Change! It will run from 1 to 4 p.m.
