Early Wednesday morning IT will be upgrading network services for the Portland campus.  This will affect printing and shared drives.  It will not affect your personal computer, your network (“H”) drive, or your Internet connection.  IT staff will be in the building all day to help reconnect you to printing and shared drives.

More information will be shared at the Portland Center Community Lunch today.

If you are able, please turn off your computer when you leave for the day on Tuesday. This will assist both you and IT with the upgrade.

Rachel Powell (Admissions) is now the administrative assistant in undergraduate admissions after serving as visit coordinator.

Martha Iancu (Communication Arts) gave a presentation at the Oregon Teachers of English to Speakers of Other Languages fall conference on Nov. 12 in Portland. The title of her presentation was “Collectivism Meets Individualism: Techniques for a Linked Intercultural Communication Class.”

Ed Higgins (English) recently accepted the Seattle-based literary journal Dark Sky Magazine’s poetry editor position. DSM publishes monthly Web issues as well as biannual “best of” print editions. The journal regularly publishes fiction, poetry, essays, art and reviews. A recent article on the Huffington Post lists Dark Sky Magazine as one of 15 top online literary journals. DSM has published Ed’s poetry as well as short fiction in past issues.

Ed also had a short fiction story, “Flash Fiction with Instructions,” published in the December 2010 issue of Untoward, a Chicago-based online fiction magazine.

Joel Perez (Student Life) was presented the Region V Knowledge Community Award for Collaboration & Visibility – Latino/a KC by the National Association of Student Personnel Administrators (NASPA). He received it in November at the organization’s regional conference in Portland.

Ed Gierok (Security Services) was nominated by his peers to serve as vice president of the Western Association of Campus Law Enforcement Administrators at the organization’s recent conference in Spokane, Wash. Ed accepted the nomination and will serve for one year as VP before moving into the president’s position. The three-day training event included hands-on assessments and reviews of known threats and vulnerabilities at a high school hostage situation. More than 30 attended the event from across the Northwest.

Mark David Hall (Political Science) will make a presentation, “Did America Have a Christian Founding,” at The Heritage Foundation in Washington, D.C., on Dec. 17.

We are happy to announce that students can now indicate via their “Student Service Center” that they want to access their 1098T Tax Form online. Making this selection will give you 24-hour access to a PDF of your tax form as soon as it is ready in January! From there it can be easily printed, e-mailed or saved.

Please be aware that if you “Grant Consent” a printed copy will no longer be mailed to you. If you like to file your taxes quickly, have moved or are concerned about mail safely reaching you, we strongly recommend this option.

Navigation: MyGFU>Student Center>Account Inquiry>Account Services tab, then choose “Grant Consent”.

Did you know you can create guest permissions so others can view unpaid charges and make payment online?

Navigation: MyGFU Student Center, scroll down to “Account Inquiry”>”Make a Payment”>”Parent/Authorized User” and fill in the boxes. You will need to create for them a PIN number (user name) and enter your guest’s e-mail address. Lastly, CLICK “OK” and a system-generated e-mail will be sent to your guest with a temporary password that they will need to change once they are logged in.

The Center for Peace and Justice and the political science department will provide 15 free copies of the new book The Poor Will Be Glad: Joining the Revolution to Lift the World out of Poverty, by Peter Greer, to the first 15 students who sign up. These students will participate in a talk-back session with the author when he comes to campus on Jan. 20.

The 15 participants will need to commit to reading the book before Jan. 19 and participate in the talk-back session with author Greer, president of Hope International. We still have 12 copies remaining.

TODAY, Dec. 13, the staff and faculty of the Portland Center will be hosting the 6th Annual Wassail Party in the main lobby on the first floor from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Stop by anytime, even a few times if you like.

Wassail is a warm spiced cider drink and we’ll have loads of treats, maybe even a few healthy ones.

There will be intermittent caroling, continuous conversation, and always some Christmas fun!

Don’t forget to join us today (Monday) in the MLRC multipurpose room for the annual Wassail Party for wassail, coffee and cookies. It’s the library’s treat to you!

Don’t forget! Applications for off-campus semester programs through George Fox are due the first Friday of spring semester, Jan. 14. Those wishing to spend a semester studying at one of our off-campus study programs during fall 2011 or spring 2012 must apply by this date. Completed applications include faculty recommendations, essays, and approval signatures, so it is best to begin your application as soon as possible!

An all-employee meeting is scheduled from 3:30 to 5 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 16, in Hoover 105.

For those at the university’s regional sites, the meeting will be available for viewing at stream.georgefox.edu/live/commmtg.sdp. A chat room has also been set up, and a video recording of the meeting will be available for viewing in the days following the meeting at itunesu.georgefox.edu.

Poinsettias will be sold for $5 after this weekend’s Christmas Concert. You may pay and reserve your poinsettias at any of the performances, but they will not be available for pick-up until after Sunday’s performance.

If you cannot make it on Sunday, they will be available for pick-up on Monday in the music office.

George Fox is again participating in the annual MLK Day of Service in Portland! This is a great opportunity for us to represent the university in the city.

Please register at this link. The event is scheduled from 6:45 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on Monday, Jan. 17. We’ll be leaving from the Duke Atrium in the Stevens Center. There is no cost to you, as we’ll provide breakfast, lunch and transportation.
