The annual Scholarship Competition is this Friday and Saturday, Feb. 11-12, and we are expecting about 700 attendees. We are asking you to give up your parking spots in the Stevens, Hoover and Wood-Mar lots, and to park on Meridian Street, North Street and Sheridan Street on Friday.

Please empty out those three lots so that our potential new students and their families have places to park, as the Bauman lot is extremely full this year. Thank you in advance for your cooperation in welcoming our guests.

How does our relationship to the land affect our relationship to God and to others? That is the central question of the Spring Theological Conference this week, Monday through Wednesday (Feb. 7-9).

Student Financial Services would like you to know what is needed for SFS clearance for housing deposits.

1. Your student account must be paid in full. If on a payment plan, your February payment must be received and any amount not covered by your payment plan must be paid.

2. Regardless of who pays your deposit, you (the student) must stop by SFS (First floor of the Stevens Center). If accepted, we will give you a Housing Deposit Confirmation slip. Without this, your deposit has not been recorded.

3. A payment received in any other way won’t be processed as a deposit and instead it will overpay the account or pay your next monthly payment. We routinely refund over-payments so if you get a refund check you are not expecting, stop by our office!

Interested in taking a class that is completed in just three weeks time? Or try a class online through George Fox this summer? These opportunities can help you lighten your load during the regular school year or “catch up” to maintain pace for graduation. Both May Term and summer online classes offer a great opportunity to complete course credit without the distraction of other classes at the same time. In addition, the tuition for these classes is half the normal per credit rate during fall and spring. Registration opens February 7 and since Summer Term classes are offered at the discretion of instructors, it is important that you register for May Term by Friday, April 15, so instructors can determine if enough students are enrolled; otherwise, a class may be canceled due to low enrollment. If you have questions about the applicability of a class to your degree requirements, feel free to contact your enrollment counselor for more information.

This is a business lab event for students preparing for upcoming Econ 202 or 201 course exams. It is open to all business students seeking extra help on course material or concepts. The session will be guided by course study guides to cover exam material. It will be run by two student tutors. Business students are encouraged to come ask questions.

Join us in Klages Friday night (Feb. 4) for dinner as we help celebrate Chinese New Year 2011, the year of the rabbit.

Chinese New Year starts with the New Moon on the first day of the new year and ends on the full moon 15 days later. The 15th day of the new year is called the Lantern Festival, which is celebrated at night with lantern displays and children carrying lanterns in a parade. The Chinese calendar is based on a combination of lunar and solar movements, which is why the Chinese New Year falls on a different date each year.

The meal is free to meal plan students and only $8 for everyone else.

How can art forms function as theological media, conveying spiritual realities in ways words cannot? The question will be the topic of a George Fox Evangelical Seminary seminar on Wednesday, Feb. 9, at the Portland Center.

Author Dan Kimball and author and theologian Maggi Dawn will speak at the event, the latest installment of the seminary’s Ministry in Contemporary Culture Seminar series. The half-day event is scheduled from 9 a.m. to noon in Room 155.

The seminar, entitled “A New Creation: The Fusion of Ministry and Creative Arts,” will address the ways in which Christ-followers have used media throughout the ages and present some new ways these media can be used today. Kimball is the author of several books on church leadership and culture, including They Like Jesus, But Not The Church and The Emerging Church. He is also on staff at Vintage Faith Church in Santa Cruz, Calif.

Dawn is based at the University of Cambridge, where she is chaplain and Fellow in Theology at Robinson College. She recently published a book, The Writing on the Wall, which explores some of the most influential stories and ideas from the Bible and the ways they have been woven into Western culture.
