Kirk Petersen, Northwest regional director for the Alpha outreach program, will speak at the Christian Chamber of Commerce of the Northwest’s Newberg breakfast on Tuesday, Feb. 22, from 7:30 to 9 a.m. in the Villa Academic Complex.

Alpha is a course on the basics of the Christian faith and is used around the world by all major Christian denominations. In 2008, more than 33,500 courses were offered in 169 nations. Petersen works to help churches effectively connect with people in their communities by running Alpha courses. He has been a pastor for 17 years, working most of that time directly with middle and high school students.

We’re making a student film that we hope to put in the Fox Film Festival and are looking for a male actor between the ages of 38-55 looking like a boss-scientist kind of guy. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 12, at Newberg Friends Church for Louise Clarkson. Louise passed quietly on Monday and is survived by her husband Marvin and their three children and grandchildren. Marvin retired from George Fox in 2009 after working as a groundskeeper at the university for 18 years.

Marvin and Louise attended 2nd Street with their son Chuck and grandchildren Joel, Amanda and Caleb. She will be missed.

Need some psychological support for Valentine’s Day? Come join the psychology department and psychology club for a cookie decorating event on Monday, Feb. 14 from 11:45 a.m. to 1:15 p.m. in the Cap and Gown Room. Why? Because everybody knows cookies are the best coping mechanism.

We have free tickets to the Renovation and Remodeling Show scheduled Friday through Sunday, March 11-13, at the Portland Coliseum. If you would like to attend, request or just pick up two tickets from Barbi Doran at the Information Services desk in Stevens Center. Each ticket has a $5 value.

Just a reminder!
Tuesday, February 15th is the last day to donate your formal dresses, shoes, jewelry, and Men’s jackets (get your guy friends to help out!) to the high school students of Savoonga, Alaska!

Your used formal dresses are needed for high school students in the Alaskan village of Savoonga because a first-ever Prom Night will be happening for those students on May 7!  We want to invite you to donate your used prom or formal dresses to the Savoonga village girls by Tuesday, February 15, 2011!  Bring them to the university relations office in Pennington House (1000 Sheridan Street) or to the ASC Offices. We will take responsibility to ship them to this village, located on St. Lawrence Island just below Siberia in the middle of the Bering Sea!

•       Roxie Quick, a 1972 George Fox alumna, is the principal at Hogarth Kingeekuk Sr. Memorial School in Savoonga, where prom night is coming back!
•       The teachers at the school are really excited about this.  They plan to teach etiquette and dance lessons and have the students research how traditional prom nights are put together.
•       The village mothers and grandmothers are also excited.  They plan to alter the dresses, find used shoes and jewelry, and chaperone the dance.

Be part of this movement and love on someone you don’t even know – all for the glory of God!

Black Forest Academy is an International Christian School in Southern Germany, primarily serving missionary children Grades 1-12.  Black Forest Academy needs qualified teachers, residence staff, and many other support staff to share their lives with our students.

Who: We welcome all students, as well as students from other universities, to come and meet recruiters from seminary schools across the country.

The schools represented thus far include: Emmanuel School of Religion, George Fox Evangelical Seminary, Mars Hill Graduate School, Regent College, University of Dubuque Theological Seminary and Western Seminary.

Due to the Scholarship Competition this weekend, we have moved First Friday to tomorrow, Friday, Feb. 11. Interested in getting involved with a homeless ministry? Urban Services gives you the opportunity to do just that! The Salem ministry meets at 5 p.m. on both Friday and Saturday in the SUB, and the Portland ministry meets at 5:30 p.m. also in the SUB. Come find out what it is like to serve the homeless and to build relationships with them!

George Fox staff: You are one in a million! And, if you are lucky, you will be one in 15! Watch for your sweet opportunity next Tuesday.

This coming Friday and Saturday we are expecting more than 400 additional high school students and parents to join us during Scholarship Competition. They will be eating lunch in Klages between 11:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. on Friday and approximately noon on Saturday.

So, we’d like to ask as many of our regular students not to come for lunch until after 12:30 p.m. on Friday in order to avoid most of the crowds. On Saturday, if at all possible, please arrive and leave before noon or after 1 p.m.

In order to accommodate all of these visitors as well as our regular students, we also will be serving both these meals on disposable paper plates and would like to encourage all George Fox students to take their meals out of the dining room those days so that we have enough room for our visitors. The Cap and Gown Room will be available for overflow.

Thanks for your help and let’s all work to make this a good experience for our visitors and prospective students. By the way, because of this, burger day will be on Thursday.

As a reminder, please give up your parking spots in the Stevens, Hoover and Wood-Mar lots and park on Meridian Street, North Street or Sheridan Street this Friday, Feb. 11, during Scholarship Competition.

Please empty out those three lots so that our potential new students and their families have places to park, as the Bauman lot is extremely full this year. Thank you in advance for your cooperation in welcoming our guests.
