The George Fox Invitational men’s golf tournament that was originally scheduled for April 9-10 at Chehalem Glenn Golf Course has been canceled. One team had a scheduling conflict and another dropped out after realizing they would not have enough players to qualify for a team score.

The university’s fashion design and merchandising students are set to debut the work of 10 student designers at a bi-annual fashion show at 7 p.m. on Sunday, April 10, in Wood-Mar Auditorium.

All are invited to attend at no charge. Tax-deductible donations, as well as gently used professional women’s clothing donations, will be taken at the door to benefit the charity Dress for Success Oregon, an affiliate of an international charity that provides low-income women with the tools they need to put them ahead in the job market.

The event, titled “Simmetria: A Fashion Show Celebrating Style from the Past, Present and Future,” will feature design inspirations ranging from the chic silhouettes of the 1940s to present-day styles. Produced by students in a fashion show production class, the event will showcase designs that incorporate “flower power,” sequins, feathers, velour, wools and more.

The School of Business will host an Executive in Residence Lecture featuring special guest Jack Dannemiller this Monday, April 11, in the Hoover Academic Building.

Dannemiller served as the chairman and chief executive of Applied Industrial Technologies in Cleveland, Ohio, prior to his retirement in 2000. He has nearly 30 years of experience in executive leadership roles with companies that include Diamond Shamrock Corporation, SDS Biotech Corporation and Leaseway Transportation Company.

The evening begins with a reception at 6:30 p.m. in the Ron Gregory Atrium in Hoover. Dannemiller’s lecture, titled “Authentic Christianity in Today’s Business World,” begins at 7 p.m. in Hoover 105.

The artistic talents of senior art students will be on display for the university’s annual Senior Thesis Exhibit and Design Presentations.

The graphic design presentations will be from 6 to 9:30 p.m. in Hoover 105 on Tuesday, April 12. The senior graphic design majors expected to present include Alicia Orlob, Kyler Dougherty, Sierra Holder, Davis Martin, Bethany Kroeker, Melissa Clarkson, Preston Devine, Nicole Johnson and Kyle DeVore.

The studio art exhibit will open with a reception from 5 to 7 p.m. in the Minthorne and Lindgren galleries on Thursday, April 14, and will include the artwork of senior art majors Mariah Carrillo, Gina Wombacher, Ari Sanders, Beth Sellers and Ali Walker. The exhibit will run through April 30.

The university’s first cadre of Act Six students will be featured at a George Fox Auxiliary luncheon, scheduled for noon Friday, April 15, in the Cap and Gown Room. Reservations are required and tickets are $7.50 per person.

“Act Six … Four Years Later” will include senior Act Six participants, who will share of their experiences at George Fox. This spring marks the first graduating class of Act Six participants. Joining them at the lunch will be Joel Perez, dean of transitions and inclusion.

A student sociology group’s “Just Add Water” Week-Long Water Challenge continues through Friday, April 8. Drop by our display in the SUB between 4:30 and 7 p.m. We’re selling water bottles for $6 and shower timers for $2 in order to raise money to build wells in Kenya through the organization World Concern. Just add water, and be the change!

Melanie Springer Mock’s (English) new book, Just Moms: Conveying Justice in an Unjust World, is being released April 6 by Barclay Press. The book is an anthology she edited with George Fox alumna Rebekah Schneiter, and includes her essay, “The Economics of Bouncy Balls,” as well as essays from faculty members Lisa McMinn (Sociology), Amy Lutz (Education) and Polly Peterson (ELI), among others.

Melanie also was published in this spring’s Oregon Humanities journal, which ran her short piece “A Losing Record.” The entry is an account of her secret past of playing on the high school basketball team with the longest losing streak in Oregon’s history, and how that made her, in her words, a “horrible coach” for her son’s third-grade team.

Paul Otto (History) presented a lecture, “Beads of Power: A Short History of Wampum,” at Houghton College in Houghton, N.Y., on March 22. Otto spoke as part of a Houghton lecture series.

Ed Higgins’ (English) poems “The Letter” and “divorce final” were recently republished in a theme issue for a Japanese-forms online journal, Romance Under a Waning Moon. Ed also published his poem “desert night” in the spring issue of the online journal Thoughtsmith, and his poem “Silent Prayer” appeared in the April-June issue of the online Numinous Magazine. In addition, Ed was one of five featured poets at the 11th Annual Silverton Poetry Festival “Feast of Poets” event held at Silver Falls Vineyards in Sublimity on April 3.

The university’s International Justice Mission chapter is hosting a week of “binding prayer” for those who are in bondage in the sex-trade industry. This Wednesday, April 6, we will meet in the Prayer Chapel at 8 p.m. for an hour of prayer for those in bondage. Please join us!

Join the Center for Peace and Justice Tuesday night, April 5, for a documentary screening of the film Hiding, produced by LINK, an organization working with North Korean refugees. It will be shown at 7:30 p.m. in Hoover 105. Chapel credit is available for students.
