Have you wondered how you would be notified in the event of an emergency on the Newberg campus?

The answer is FOXALERT.

FOXALERT is a communication service from Blackboard Connect Inc., to deliver emergency information to students and staff.

GFU has implemented the service to provide us with the ability to reach students and staff members with information and updates during unforeseen events or emergencies, within minutes, through phone calls, e-mails and/or text messages.

In the unlikely event of an emergency you would be potentially notified through three different methods:

1. Cell phone
2. E-mail
3. Text message

HOWEVER, for either of these methods to work YOU must enter your personal contact information in your MYGFU account.
Here’s how you do it!

–       Login to your MYGFU account
–       Click on SELF SERVICE
–       Click on CAMPUS PERSONAL INFORMATION
–       Click on PHONE NUMBERS
–       On the PHONE TYPE pick list, choose the phone type you are registering.
–       Type in your contact information
–       Click SAVE
–       If you need to add a number, first click on ADD A PHONE NUMBER
–       Make sure you click SAVE after each change.

When contacted by PHONE the number you will see is: 503-554-2007.

Staff, faculty and students: There is still time to register for the C-CERT Campus Emergency Responder training beginning next Wednesday, Sept. 14. Classes will take place from 2 to 5 p.m. on Wednesdays in Hoover 210, and you must be pre-registered by Monday, Sept. 12, in order to attend this weekly training that concludes with a training activity on Saturday, Oct. 29.

Students- Security Services has put out over 600 warning tickets on cars parked illegally, not registered, and for permits not displayed properly. A ticket for non-registration begins at $65, so please register your vehicles immediately on myGFU! Any student who has not either registered their vehicle, or registered as NOT bringing a car to campus WILL be assigned a non-refundable parking permit on Monday, and $25 will be charged to their student account.

The Staff Development Committee has budgeted funds for use by support staff members to attend seminars that will enhance their job skills and professional development. The Professional Development Fund will cover a portion of the seminar fee as follows: Up to 50 percent of the total cost, with a maximum of $75. For seminars over $500, reimbursement is $100.

Each support staff member is limited to one use of this fund per fiscal year. Funds are available until used up, so apply as early as possible. If you have questions, please contact Barbi Doran, Staff Development Committee chair, at ext. 2099 or visit our website at sdc.georgefox.edu.

Staff and faculty: Security Services spent the summer preparing Emergency Response Guides for each classroom on campus, and they have now all been installed. Please look for this bright yellow guide in your classroom and familiarize yourselves with the nearest exits, location of fire extinguishers and pull boxes, and what to do for various types of emergencies before you need the information!

There is also a floor plan on the last page of each guide indicating the location of nearest exits, pull stations, etc. Addresses for the building are on the front cover so you can give that to emergency personnel when you call 911. Please remember to also call security if you’ve called 911 from a cell phone so we can assist you with the emergency.

Please take a few moments to point out exit routes and other pertinent information to the students in your classroom at the beginning of each semester. Security personnel would be happy to answer any questions you might have at ext. 2090.

Applications are available now for the annual SCORR conference. It is open to any undergraduate student, and we encourage all who are interested to apply.

This year we are gathering a team of students who will be awarded partial scholarships and participate in diversity events, including going to Biola University in California. See the SCORR 2011 website for more details.

Living Area Representatives and Class Representatives comprise the ASC Supreme Court. The Supreme Court is tasked with reviewing the minutes of the Central Committee to ensure that it is acting with the bounds of the ASC Constitution. The Supreme Court also oversees the Community Life Fund, which exists to provide students with financial means to organize events for parts or all of the student body.

The position is paid, very social, and looks great on a resume.

The application deadline is Friday, September 9 at 5 p.m. in the ASC Offices.

Peer2Peer is new program that pairs up incoming underrepresented students with retuning student mentors. In the program an underrepresented student is defined as: you come from a low social economic status, are a first generation student, or are from a diverse ethnic background. We are accepting applications for new mentees.

Peer2Peer is a new program that allows incoming underrepresented students to be paired up with our returning student mentors.

In the program we define underrepresented students as first-generation, low social economic status, or domestic underrepresented ethnicity.

Because the spiritual life e-mail wasn’t working last week, we ask that you resubmit student worker chapel exemption lists. If you have students in your department who are working for you during the chapel hour or who are in an internship on Mondays and Wednesdays, please send spiritual life (spirituallife@georgefox.edu) the list of those students along with their ID number. Exemptions must be processed by Friday, Sept. 23.

Students with an internship on Mondays or Wednesdays or who work during the chapel hour are eligible for partial chapel credit exemption. If you have questions about the chapel policy, check out our spiritual life website.

The university hired Isabelle Corneaux to serve as a visiting assistant professor of French. A native of France, Isabelle has spent the past four years as a French instructor at Columbia Basin College in Pasco, Wash. She also has experience teaching the language as a tutor for adults and teenagers. She spent the summers between 2002 and 2009 teaching French to foreign students at Centre International d’Etudes Francaises at the University of Burgundy in Dijon, France. All told, she has more than 20 years experience teaching the language, both in her native France and in locales including French Polynesia and Hong Kong. Isabelle earned a master’s degree in education from Heritage University in Pasco, Wash., (2011) and earned a Teaching French as a Foreign Language Master designation from the University of Burgundy and ENS in Fontenay St-Cloud, France (2004). She lives in McMinnville with her husband Bruno and children, Louis and Gabriel.

Kristi Hagen has joined the Department of Advancement and Integrated Marketing as a database specialist III. She’s spent the past year as a customer service agent with Hagan Hamilton Insurance Services at its Newberg branch. The year prior, she worked as the owner and lead counselor for Set Free Financial Counseling, a business dedicated to helping individuals and couples with budgeting and debt reduction. She also has business experience as a purchasing, shipping and receiving clerk for Caravan Coffee of Newberg (2003-05). Kristi is a licensed property and casualty insurance agent and a Dave Ramsey-certified financial counselor. She lives in Newberg with her husband, Bill, and their three children: Jeremy (19), Tiffany (18) and Breanna (6). They attend GodSong Church, where Kristi serves as board president.

Alex Martin joined the university last week as a graduate admissions counselor for the School of Education. For the past four years, he has worked as the head tennis professional at the West Hills Racquet & Fitness Club in Portland, where he recruited members, coached and handled administrative duties. Previously, he worked as a wellness teacher and success coach for the McMinnville School District (2005-07) and as a full-time intern with a Young Life chapter in Winston-Salem, N.C. (2003-05). Alex earned a bachelor’s degree in physical education from Linfield College in 2003 and holds a master’s degree in athletic coaching education from West Virginia University (2007). He lives in Beaverton with wife Tracy and daughter Avery (1) and attends Beaverton Foursquare Church.

Yune Tran joins the School of Education as an assistant professor of education this year. Since 2008, she has worked as an English language learner district coach in the Leander Independent School District in Leander, Texas, where she developed and delivered trainings, seminars and workshops for ESL and general education teachers. Before that, Yune was an ESL curriculum specialist in a school district in Austin, Texas. She also served as an elementary school teacher in Compton, Calif., and has gained diverse teaching experiences through her roles as a bilingual and classroom teacher in middle and elementary school settings in Florida, Texas and California. Yune completed her PhD in curriculum and instruction from the University of Texas at Austin this summer and holds an MEd degree in educational leadership from Texas State University. She lives in Sherwood with her husband, Darren, and three girls: Keilana, Malia and Nalani. She attends St. Francis Catholic Church.
