The Center for Peace and Justice invites the community to hear from alumna Davy Desmond from 7:30 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 20, in the religious studies lounge. Davy, a double major at George Fox in economics and international studies, has focused her energies on serving the poor, working the past few years with Orphan Relief and Rescue. Currently, she is working to establish a thriving ministry in Uganda.

After speaking at GFU she will leave for Uganda on Oct. 1, where she will partner with Show Mercy International. For 70 days she will work in “Hope Children’s Home,” home to more than 100 children, and will also help build the “Field of Dreams,” a 25-acre plot of land designated for ministry (a school, a clinic and a church).

Our movie, Worth It!, is in need of a lead male actor. There are only two words in the whole movie, so don’t worry too much about dialogue. It’s an unpaid gig with minimal shooting, but you will be fed.

The shoot will be done the weekend of Oct 15. Audtions for the movie will be held this Thursday, Sept. 22, at 5 p.m. in the Media Center on campus. Resumes are not required, just headshots. If you have acting experience, make sure to include it in the e-mail.

The film is Charlie Chaplin-esque. Actor should be very animated and look between 20 and 35. If interested or if you have questions, e-mail Mac Oxford at moxford09@georgefox.edu.

On Monday, Sept. 19, Marcella Gowan (Nursing) will speak on the issue of maternal mortality in the Majority World. Marcella served as a missionary nurse-midwife for 20 years and has teaching experience in many countries.

Marcella’s presentation is part of the Liberal Arts & Critical Issues series “Majority World and the West.” She will speak from 4:40 to 5:40 p.m. and from 7 to 8 p.m. in Hoover 105.

Urban Services meets every Friday to send students into Portland and Salem to meet and build relationships with the homeless. Urban Services begins this Friday, Sept. 16! The groups will meet in the Bruin Den. Salem meets for dinner at 4:30 p.m. and departs at 5 p.m.; Portland departs at 5:30 p.m. Come join us and help serve our neighboring homeless community.

The short film Beautiful, a story about discovering one’s unique beauty as a woman of God, is having auditions this Saturday, Sept. 17, at 3 p.m. in the university’s Media Center on the Newberg campus. It is a statement video about expressing beauty as a woman and not being afraid of it or just copying what the media portrays as beautiful.

Two roles are being cast:

• A young woman (18-26 years old) who is very conservative in the ways she expresses her beauty and tends to go unnoticed in large crowds and tries to be invisible.
• A second young woman (18-26 years old) who is very elaborate and flashy in the ways she expresses her beauty and tends to be judged in the Christian community because of what she wears.

Shooting will be conducted the weekend of Oct. 7-9 in Newberg. There is no pay, but meals will be provided during the shoot, a DVD copy will be given after completed, and a great seat at our premiere will be reserved for you.

Join us for a day of revival Wednesday (Sept. 14) with AJ Swoboda, pastor of the Theophilus Church gathering in the Hawthorne District of Portland. AJ will share both in our morning chapel (10:40 a.m.) and at an evening gathering at 7 p.m. in Bauman Auditorium.

I am trying to get a group of men who are interested in trying an all-men’s beginning yoga class for four weeks. The weekly class would be in the evenings from 5:45 to 7:15 p.m. or possibly on the weekend. The course will be at First Street Yoga and led by John Estrem, who has been practicing Iyengar yoga for 10 years. The total cost is $48.

Valley Repertory Theatre’s opening of Walk A Mile is this Thursday, September 15th.

The show runs Thursday-Saturday, September 15-17 and 22-24 at 7:30 pm.

Sunday matinees will run September 18 and 25 at 2 pm.

Performances of Walk a Mile: Stories of Newberg will take place at the Chehalem Cultural Center, 415 E. Sheridan St. Newberg, OR 97132, just a short walk from the Newberg campus.

Tickets on for students are only $10, however, Thursday night performances are ‘pay what you will.’

All tickets are for general seating and will be sold at the door, beginning thirty minutes before each show. Adult tickets are $15, seniors are $12 and students are $10. All Thursday performances are “pay what you will.” Cash, check and cards accepted. A $1 processing fee will be added to card transactions. Seating is limited. Founders Stephen Pick and Caleb Thurston, recent graduates from George Fox University, have directed for schools and theatres in the Portland-area before establishing this theatre in the community they had grown to love while attending college.

The Theatre Honor Society, APO, is holding general auditions for our student one-act festival, opening later in November.

Auditions will be held on Saturday, September 17, 10 a.m.-12 p.m. in Wood-Mar Auditorium.
