Alan Kluge (Business) participated in the annual fall conference of the Deming Institute at Purdue University Oct. 15-16. The institute is an organization dedicated to creating dialogue between faculty, industry and students around the work of W. Edwards Deming, the individual attributed with turning around manufacturing in Japan following World War II and significantly contributing to the improvement of quality by industry in the United States in the 1980s. Alan will be sharing the knowledge gained from the conference with his MBA classes.
Kenn Willson (Performing Arts) performed his “Encounters with Beethoven†concert for the Tualatin Valley Oregon Music Teachers Association District event on Oct. 14. The concert incorporates the piano music of Beethoven (including the Hunt and Moonlight sonatas) with movie clips, cartoon clips, slides and readings from and about Beethoven. The event drew the largest audience (240) the event has ever had, according to organizers. Students in attendance ranged in age from 3 to college age.

Between Monday, Oct. 31, and Saturday, Nov. 12, the first-floor lobby of the Portland Center will be our collection site for non-perishable food items to support Take Action Inc. All students, employees and friends are encouraged to participate.
Take Action works with students from six elementary schools in Portland to ensure that underprivileged children have food to eat when they go home on the weekend. This need was observed because many of the kids would load up on their Friday lunch, even trying to stuff their pockets of extra food to take home. Many of the kids at these schools wouldn’t eat again until the school provided breakfast on Monday morning.
The school staff began connecting with folks outside their area to gather food for these kids to take home to feed themselves and sometimes their families over the weekend.

The university’s Department of History and Political Science invites the community to hear Carol Swain, professor of political science and law at Vanderbilt University, on campus Wednesday, Nov. 2.
Presentations open to the public include:
Swain, an award-winning author and media personality, has appeared on BBC Radio, NPR, PBS, C-SPAN and ABC, among other media outlets. She rose from being a high school dropout and teenage mother to earning a PhD from the University of North Carolina and a master’s degree in law from Yale Law School.
She is widely recognized as an expert on race relations, immigration, black leadership and evangelical politics.

The student film Pushing 80 is still in need of two remaining roles, a grandma and a main gang member, Felix. We will be shooting one short scene the weekend of Nov. 4-5, so we are in need of filling Felix’s part as soon as we can. We need to fill the Grandma’s part by the weekend of Nov. 11-13. Here is the info about the script and the character descriptions.
A car thief gang of five is raiding a small town of specific vintage cars for a car collector. They do this untraditionally by overtaking the car as its driving down the road. The gang meets its match in the form of a 65-year-old grandma in a red 1970 Corvette Chevrolet.
Felix: Felix is the ring leader of the gang who has the final say in the discussions for the gang. However, he gets his instructions from from a higher-up boss. He has been doing this for years now and is confident in his skills and in his gang’s abilities. Felix is a clean-cut 30-year-old. He is not necessarily buff, but rather uses his intelligence the most. He does all the thinking, but sometimes his anger comes out and dictates his discussions. Felix also feels that he must protect the new girl Scarlet.
Mary (Grandma): Mary is the main protagonist in the film. She is a sweet, typical 65-year-old grandma who loves her simple life but also is able-bodied and independent. She used to be a police officer in her younger days, but nobody ever sees that side of her until she is put in a situation that she needs those skills.

The George Fox SCORR (Student Congress of Racial Reconciliation) group is in the process of fundraising for our conference trip to Biola University this coming February, and we need your help!

Bruin Directories can now be ordered online. The directories are a service to the George Fox community, created by a staff within ASC. We have worked very hard to get the book out to the community in a timely fashion, and we are pleased to say that the books are near completion.
Each Bruin Directory is $5 and the total will be charged to the provided department account number. The directories will be distributed through Mail Services. The deadline for placing orders is Friday, Nov. 4. Please place your orders online at this link.

The last day of October is Monday, Oct. 31. Turn in your October time sheets to your supervisor at the end of your last shift of the month. Be sure your name and ID number is typed or printed legibly at the top, it is complete and accurate, and you have signed it.
Payday is on Tuesday, Nov. 15. Â If you forget to turn in your time sheet on time, you may not get paid on the 15th.

Student supervisors: Payday for student employees is Tuesday, Nov. 15. For us to meet this deadline we need your students’ October time sheets by Thursday, Nov. 3, by 5 p.m. If you are on the Newberg campus, please hand-deliver the time sheets. If you send them with a student, make sure they are in a sealed envelope. Any time sheets received after this deadline may not get paid on the 15th.
Please be sure the student’s name, ID number and cost center number is legible on each one. Also, don’t forget to sign them and be sure the students did as well. Please do not send students to HR to sign their time sheets.

The campus community is invited to the George Fox Auxiliary’s annual holiday bazaar Friday and Saturday, Nov. 4-5. The event will feature more than 20 artisans selling jewelry, art, crafts, plants and food.
The bazaar will be held in two different buildings. The main bazaar will be held in the Ron Gregory Atrium between Wood-Mar Hall and the Edwards-Holman Science Center on Friday, Nov. 4, from 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. and on Saturday, Nov. 5, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Additional vendors will be set up in the Hoover Academic Building atrium during the same times. Admission is free.
