We are expecting more than 600 guests on campus this weekend – and that doesn’t include the community members who will be here to shop at the auxiliary’s holiday bazaar and silent auction. Feel free to head over to the Ron Gregory Atrium in EHS or the Hoover Atrium to check out the 45 vendors on Friday between 10 a.m. and 5:30 p.m. or Saturday between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m.

Another event you might want to put on your schedule: the women’s basketball alumni game, scheduled for Saturday at 7 p.m. Admission is free!

Exodus Fair for fall grads! If you are graduating this December, stop by the Exodus Fair on Thursday, Nov. 3, in the Stevens Center Atrium from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. You can pick up your cap and gown, order graduation announcements, enjoy some free food, and much more!

Your degree is almost done, graduation is right around the corner, and it’s time to celebrate. We hope to see you there!

For those students graduating in April, please note your Exodus Fair will be in March.

If you are a student living on campus at George Fox, we want to hear your thoughts on a variety of factors regarding campus housing and dining services. Please take 10 to 15 minutes to complete this survey about your experiences.

The survey will be available for you to complete until 5 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 23.

The information collected from this will be used to:
1) Better understand student opinions and perceptions of university housing
2) Assess and evaluate the strengths and weaknesses of student housing
3) Prioritize the use of resources to improving housing and housing selection
4) Prioritize and understand needs for strategic and long-term planning

Have students who struggle with grammar, punctuation and/or spelling errors? Encourage them to attend an Academic Resource Center-sponsored workshop with Bill Jolliff (English) this Friday, Nov. 4, at 10:40 a.m. in EHS 125.

Bill will identify the 10 errors that professors are most likely to mark on student work, and he’ll demonstrate how to fix them.

Most of us don’t worry too much about a writing mistake or two. It’s what we have to say that really matters, right?

Well, yes – and no.

The bad news is that too many editing errors can keep our readers from taking us – and our ideas – seriously. The good news is that most of our errors are relatively easy to fix, once we figure out which ones we’re prone to make.

In this Academic Resource Center-sponsored workshop, Bill Jolliff, professor of English, will identify the 10 errors that professors are most likely to mark on student work, and he’ll demonstrate how to fix them.

This week is your last chance to see the university’s fall show, Steel Magnolias, in Wood-Mar Auditorium. Performances run Thursday through Saturday at 7:30 p.m. and conclude with a matinee performance at 2 p.m. on Sunday.

Thursday’s show is free to students, while employees get one complimentary ticket each for any of the performances. The box office, located at the Information Center on the first floor of the Stevens Center, is open Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Additional tickets can be purchased in Stevens or online at theatre.georgefox.edu.

Please note: Saturday’s performance is sold out and Friday’s show is nearly sold out. There are still plenty of great seats available for Thursday or Sunday.

The university’s Department of History and Political Science invites the community to hear Carol Swain, professor of political science and law at Vanderbilt University, on campus today (Wednesday).

Swain, an award-winning author and media personality, has appeared on BBC Radio, NPR, PBS, C-SPAN and ABC, among other media outlets. She rose from being a high school dropout and teenage mother to earning a PhD from the University of North Carolina and a master’s degree in law from Yale Law School.

She is widely recognized as an expert on race relations, immigration, black leadership and evangelical politics.

National Anthem singers are needed! If you would like to sing the National Anthem at one or more home basketball contests during the upcoming season, please put Sunday, Nov. 13, at 8:30 p.m. on your calendar. Steve Grant, associate athletic director, will host auditions that evening for anyone interested.

This Monday, Nov. 7, the Portland Youth Philharmonic, led by conductor and music director David Hattner, will present a free concert at 7:30 p.m. in Bauman Auditorium.

The program for the concert includes: Malcolm Arnold’s Four Scottish Dances; Elgar’s Enigma Variations, and Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No. 5 “Emperor”with Fred Lu, PYP’s 2011 Piano Concerto Competition Winner. The concert is a free preview of PYP’s annual fall concert to be held in the Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall on Nov. 12, at 7:30 p.m.

‘An Evening of Jazz’ Concert
On Friday, jazz trumpeter and vocalist Byron Stripling will perform with the university’s Jazz Ensemble and a faculty trio at 7:30 p.m. in Bauman Auditorium.

Stripling is a Basie Band alumnus, known as a spectacular trumpeter with a wide range, beautiful tone, and the ability to blend together many influences in his own style.

All employees and students are entitled to one complimentary ticket, which covers admission for up to four people. Tickets are available for pick-up at the Information Center on the first floor of the Stevens Center or can be ordered online by going to this page and following these directions:

Family Weekend Concert
On Saturday, the university’s Family Weekend fall concert is scheduled at 4 p.m. in Bauman Auditorium. Admission is free. The event will feature performances by the university’s Women’s Chorale, String Ensemble, Men’s Ensemble, Concert Choir and Symphonic Band.

Among the selections to be performed are The Longest Time (Billy Joel) and The Lion Sleeps Tonight (as recorded by Metropolis), by the Men’s Chorale; Caledonian’s Air from Three Scottish Songs and Dance Into the Day (Mark Patterson) by the Women’s Chorale; Brandenburg Concerto No. 3 (Bach) by the String Ensemble; Rejoice Exultantly (Baroque Comoser Calvisius) and No Time (arr. Susan Brumfield) by the Concert Choir; and The Glory of the Yankee (John Philip) and Vizcaya (Vinter) by the Symphonic Band.

Student Life is coordinating university employees who are interested in hosting a student at their family’s Thanksgiving dinner. We will be compiling a list of interested people.
