George Fox theatre students are selling oil change cards to raise money to attend the Region VII Kennedy Center American College Theatre Festival in Fort Collins, Colo., in February.

Each card is good for one oil, lube, and filter, plus a 50-point inspection, at Doran Automotive in Newberg. Each card costs $25 (the same price you would pay with the Bruin Discount Card), and the net proceeds go toward transportation costs for the students.

Be an agent of change through camp ministry! Attend the Christian Camp Fair this Thursday, Jan. 26, from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. in the EHS Atrium.

Positions may include: guest service hosts, counselors, program staff, food services, wranglers, lifeguards, operations staff, baristas, gift shop attendants, nurses, housekeeping, videographers, worship leaders and more!

The university community is invited to a presentation by Larry Spears, an expert on servant leadership, from 10:40 to 11:30 a.m. this Friday, Jan. 27, in Hoover 105.

Spears, president and CEO of the Larry C. Spears Center for Servant-Leadership of Indianapolis and a servant-leadership scholar at Gonzaga University, is a nationally renowned authority on servant leadership – a practice adopted by some of the world’s top corporations over the past five decades. He is a writer and editor who has published hundreds of articles, essays, newsletters, books and other publications on servant-leadership.

The event will not be recorded. Chapel credit is available for students who wish to attend.

HR just received tickets to the Renovation and Remodeling Show coming up this weekend – Friday, Saturday and Sunday, Jan. 27-29 – at Portland Memorial Coliseum.

This event features hundreds of exhibits with home improvement experts available to show attendees what is new for building, remodeling, decorating and landscaping homes. Employees can pick up two tickets each ($8 value) at the Information Services desk in Stevens Center. Portland employees can request tickets by e-mailing Barbi Doran.

Tickets are now available for the university’s winter musical production, She Loves Me. The play opens Thursday, Feb. 2, and runs Thursday through Sunday, Feb. 2-5, and again Thursday through Sunday, Feb. 9-12, in Wood-Mar Auditorium. All shows begin at 7:30 p.m. with the exception of the two Sunday (Feb. 5 and 12) performances, scheduled as 2 p.m. matinees.

Tickets are available at the box office between 10 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. and can be claimed by dropping by or calling 503-554-3844. Tickets are also available online at theatre.georgefox.edu. Employees get one complimentary ticket for any performance, and Thursday nights are free student nights. The box office is now located at the information desk on the first floor of the Stevens Center.

Synopsis

Directed by Rhett Luedtke with the assistance of  Maggie Daane (musical director) and Richard Elliott (conductor), She Loves Me tells the story of Georg Nowack, whose life as head clerk in Maraczek’s Parfumerie is relatively peaceful until Amalia Balash is hired. While Georg and Amalia clash at work, each of them finds solace writing love letters to their anonymous romantic pen pals in the evening. When Georg discovers that his pen pal is none other than Amalia, he faces
a crisis of heart. Will his love for his pen pal prevail? Or will his disgust of his co-worker triumph?

She Loves Me is based on the book by Joe Masterhoff. The music was written by Jerry Bock (music) and Sheldon Harnick (lyrics), the duo who co-wrote Fiddler on the Roof.

George Fox University theatre announces auditions for an original piece titled The Broken. Due to the nature of this piece, we have structured the audition process differently than usual:

Day 1:
Monday, Feb. 6, from 8-10 p.m. in Wood-Mar Auditorium
This is an ensemble audition, consisting of a movement workshop and cold readings from the working script. Also, be ready to perform a 90-second monologue if asked. Sign-ups for this audition will be in Ross.

Day 2:
Tuesday, Feb. 7, from 8-10 p.m. in Wood-Mar Auditorium
This ensemble audition will be a continuation of the movement workshop and cold readings.

Note: If you are at all involved with the Spring Choir Concert, you will not be able to audition for The Broken because performances conflict.

Important Dates:
Rehearsals begin Feb. 20, running Monday-Friday 7-11  p.m. and Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Performances are April 12-14 and 19-21 at 7:30 p.m. with a matinee on April 22 at 2 p.m.

This is a challenging piece that will require focus and discipline, so bring you best work to you audition.

The university’s nursing department welcomed Tiffany Caldwell as a full-time clinical faculty member this month. She has worked at George Fox on an adjunct basis the past four years and, since 2001, has worked as a staff nurse in the neonatal intensive care unit at Providence St. Vincent Medical Center in Portland. She also taught nursing at Clackamas Community College in 2009. As an RN, Tiffany specializes in acute patient care, staff development and family advocacy. She earned a Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree from Linfield College in 2001. Tiffany lives in St. Paul with her husband Lance and their three children – Madison (16), Cameron (15) and Jordan (9).

Mary Monahan was hired as the new coordinator for university engagement this month. For the past two years she has worked as an assistant to the associate principal at Sherwood High School. In the six years prior to that (2004-10), Mary was a director’s assistant and preschool teacher for Magic Years Preschool at the Metro Gymnastics Center in Tualatin. She attended Portland Community College from 1987 to 1989 and returned to PCC in 2009 to study early childhood education and family studies. She lives in Tualatin and has three children – daughter Emily (a freshman at George Fox) and sons Alec and Jake. Mary attends Rolling Hills Community Church in Tualatin.

Jan Lefebvre (Advancement) just returned from serving in Haiti for eight days with Lifeline Christian Mission. She was part of a team of 40 women who served and ministered to women, children and infants, sharing God’s love with them and encouraging them. She also delivered more than 200 handmade clothing items from a ministry she coordinates at her church. “The trip was truly a blessing to all of us who were able to be a part of this team,” Jan said.

Kevin T. Jones (Communication Arts) published “Paul’s Use of Aristotelian Enthymeme’s in New Testament Scripture: Turning ‘Head Knowledge’ into ‘Heart Knowledge,’” in the January 2012 edition of the Memphis Theological Seminary Journal. Paul’s Roman education was influenced by Greek rhetorical thought that included the study and use of enthymemes (a rhetorical device designed to force audience participation in the persuasion process resulting in increased compliance by the recipient). The essay identifies several enthymemes used by Paul throughout his New Testament writings which contributed to effective persuasion within the early church.

Mark David Hall (Herbert Hoover Distinguished Professor of Politics) published an editorial, “Protecting religious freedom: Let’s hear it for the separation of church and state,” as a guest columnist on the OregonLive.com site Jan. 14.

Ed Higgins (English) published a poem, “Spent Speech,” in the January 2012 issue of Four and Twenty, an online short-form poetry website.

We are in need of six actors (of high-school looking age) for a 25-minute short student film.

The synopsis: Push the bully holds cruel dominion over the school, earning his respect through fear and deprecation. When new kid John Williams enters the school and challenges his sovereignty, Push must fight to retain not only his power, but also his very identity.

The six roles we are searching for are:

• Push the bully is not short, nor is he tall. With his smile he could get away with murder.
• Eugene Kraft is Push’s righthand man. Eugene is afraid of Push, and loves seeing Push bully anybody beside himself.
• John Williams is a prince. A hero. He is well-read, well-bred, and well traveled. He is tall with blond hair and steely blue eyes.
• Frank is one of Push’s favorite victims. Frank is overweight. And he has a lisp.
• Slud is another of Push’s favorite victims. Slud has a disability that requires the use of forearm crutches.
• Clob, another of Push’s favorites, looks radioactive. Clob has acne and is ugly under his acne.

We also need some giggling high school girls who have crushes on  Williams the new kid, and also someone to play a very short role of a maid/mother, and possibly a damsel in distress.

This is a non-paying gig, but we will provide meals during long shoot days, a DVD of the film will be provided when its done, and also great seats at the premiere.

We are planning on shooting the weekends of Feb. 10-12, 17-19 and 24-26. Auditions are this Thursday and Friday, Jan. 26-27, at the Portland Center near Tigard at 7 p.m.

Are you a talented male actor, interested in adding a short film or scene to your repertoire? Excellent.

I’m looking for a few talented guys to act in a few short scenes of scripts that I have written for my Senior Portfolio class. The scripts are funny, intelligent, and are guaranteed to be as much fun to film as they were to write. Parts include frustrated comedy writers, boys with crushes, professional box-sitters, and a man with the ability to make the perfect piece of toast.

We’re looking to film over the course of a weekend or two, although schedules are really flexible, since we’re all students. Each script should take no more than three to five hours to run through and film.

Registration for the Sports and Entertainment Career Fair has been extended until Wednesday, Jan. 25!

Each year, the Portland Trailblazers coordinate a Sports & Entertainment Career Fair at the Rose Garden. This year’s fair is scheduled for Monday, March 5, on a night the Blazers host the New Orleans Hornets. The fair targets marketing, communication, media and management majors.

Career Services is coordinating the group registration and providing transportation to this fair. Payment is required to secure your registration and ticket. Complete your registration via Bruin Careers by Jan. 25. If paying by cash or check, please remit payment to Career Services (first floor of Stevens). You may also pay by credit card online.
