The article “8 Qualities of Remarkable Employees” has been posted to the Employee Council website. Take a minute to read the article, then respond to our mini-survey question: Who is a remarkable employee you’ve seen at Fox, and what makes that person a remarkable employee?

Responses to the mini-survey are visible on the site, as are minutes from past meetings. You are always welcome to contact the Employee Council by e-mailing us at employeecouncil@georgefox.edu or by directly contacting an individual on the council (see the website for a list of members).

Benefit-eligible employees, half time and above, have an opportunity to enroll in a new group plan with lower rates and a guarantee-issue (no need to qualify medically).

Interested in developing your leadership skills? Want to serve the international community and connect the international students with the domestic community?

The International Club is recruiting leaders for the 2012-2013 school year. We are looking for one president, one vice president, one secretary, one treasurer, five event coordinators and two reporters.

If you are interested in applying for any of the club leadership positions, please go to the International House/Cultural Center to get the application form, fill it out, and turn it in to the International House/Cultural Center. You can find out the job description of each position in the application form. Please remember the application deadline is Friday, March 16.

The second annual George Fox International Photo Contest is here. Submit your photos taken outside of the United States to join this event. Winners will receive a cash prize of $50, $25 and $15 (for first-, second- and third-place winners). The Best of Show will receive $75.

Three categories of the photos you can submit:

• People – locals of where the photo was taken, or you and your friends abroad
• Landscape and Architecture
• Culture – subjects outside the first two categories that reflect cultural creative/artistic qualities

Contestants must e-mail the photo to:

• Lishan Zeng (lzeng09@georgefox.edu) if you are a student
• Alice Gozal (agozal10@georgefox.edu) if you are an employee

All entries must be submitted with the following information:

• Your name and identity as student or GFU employee
• Category in which you wish to have the photo judged
• Title of photo
• Location the photo was taken (city, country, etc.)
• Description of the photo (story behind it)

We’re doing more tree planting! This week we will be planting more dogwood and a wide variety of native wildflowers in the Hess Creek forest on Thursday, March 8. Feeling stressed? The Academic Resource Center is hosting a workshop, “Managing Stress,” this Friday, March 9, from 10:40 to 11:30 a.m. in EHS 125.

This workshop will give effective and concrete tools to help college students manage the stress of college. Topics will include time management, test anxiety, insomnia, roommate and relationship issues, and utilizing stress to your advantage. Our presenter will be Laura Helmer from the Health and Counseling Center.

Cris Banton was hired as assistant vice president of financial affairs and controller this week. She has worked the past 12 years as a budget and accounting services manager for AHA International Inc., a department at the University of Oregon that provides study-abroad programs. Previously, she co-owned Boulder Excavation Inc., a Hillsboro-based business, where she developed all accounting and administrative procedures for the company from 1997 to 2003. Cris also worked as a self-employed CPA from 1992 to 2002. She earned a bachelor’s degree in accounting from Linfield College in 1980. Cris lives on Bald Peak with two dogs and three cats. Her daughter Jessica and son-in-law Brendt live in Sherwood, and her son David attends Motorcycle Mechanics Institute in Phoenix.

As a reminder, the financial affairs office has implemented a new process for employee expense reimbursements.

For those who have signed up for direct deposit: If your Expense Reimbursement Form is received in the financial affairs office by Monday, your deposit will be processed on Thursday of that week. If it’s received after Monday it will be processed on Thursday of the following week. Please note that payment may take up to 48 hours to appear in your account.

For those who have not signed up or who chosen to have their reimbursements process as a check: Checks will be cut only on the first Monday of each month. If your Expense Reimbursement Form arrives in the financial affairs office by 5 p.m. on the 20th of the month your payment will be included in the next check run. If your paperwork arrives after the 20th of the month it will not be processed until the following month’s check run.

Example: If your paperwork arrives before March 20th the check will be cut on the first Monday in April. If your paperwork arrives after March 20th your check will be cut on the first Monday of May.

If you would like your reimbursements to be set up as direct deposit, you need to download, complete and submit the authorization form to the financial affairs office (Box #6029). The form can be found on the FAO’s Common Forms webpage.

Rodger Bufford (Graduate Psychology) chaired the American Psychological Association Commission on Accreditation site visit to the Doctor of Psychology in Clinical Psychology program at Regent University Feb 5-7.

David Kerr (Visual Arts) will be published for two of his designs in March 2012. Kerr’s images were selected as examples of “bright ideas from around the world” for two of David E. Carter’s new upcoming graphic design books: Logos 2 and Business Cards 1. Kerr designed the TAPP Financial logo and business card system and a logotype for Billboards Worldwide, both Canadian companies.

Paul Anderson (Religious Studies) spoke in a Malone University chapel on Feb. 29 on “Called to Serve; Called to Prepare.” He also presented on “The Riddles of John” at Malone the same week.

Ed Higgins (English) published a poem, “distant hill,” in the first issue (March) of the online literary journal Straight Forward: A Poetry Journal.

Believe it or not, the middle of the spring semester is at hand. Now is the time to take an assessment of your perception of how you are doing in each of your classes.

PLEASE read this message CAREFULLY!

Mid-term grades, while not a part of your final semester grade report, are an important indicator of how you are doing academically.

Mid-term grades are meant to encourage students to get in touch with their professors.

There are many resources here at GFU to get you the help you need to be academically successful. If you don’t know what these resources are, please contact me.

Professors will be entering their mid-term grades on Wednesday, March 7, through Friday, March 9.

After March 9, you can view your grades in MYGFU if a mid-semester grade has been entered.

If you do not have a grade entered, then your professor has NOT entered a mid-term grade for you. This could be for a variety of reasons.

We STRONGLY suggest that every student contacts their professors (for each class) to see how you are doing in that class.

Log in to MyGFU to find your mid-semester grades (after March 9)

• Select Student Center
• From the Other Academic drop-down (in the Academics section of the start page), select Grades.
• Select the term and the Mid-Term Grades tab (next to the Official Grades tab which will be the default display). The Mid-Term Grades tab ONLY appears once at least one grade has been entered for you by an instructor.

Now you need to determine what to do next:

• Consider whether to withdraw from one or more courses if it looks likely that you’ll get an F (or maybe even a D).
• Discuss your situation with your advisor and professors.
• The last date to withdraw is Sunday, March 18, at 11:59 p.m.

You can usually go below 12 hours (at this point in the semester) without impacting your financial aid. Please confirm your financial aid status with your student financial services counselor.

If you go below 12 hours and you are an on campus resident, you will need to contact Dave Johnstone, the associate dean of students, to appeal the policy pertaining to 0n-campus residence requirements which states that you must be enrolled in at least 12 semester hours to live on campus.

Withdrawal results in a “W” on your transcript but does not factor into GPA.

If you were to get an F, it would impact GPA.
