On Wednesday, May 9, your Staff Development Committee will be serving up ice cream. The university’s annual ice cream social will take place between 2:30 and 3:30 p.m. in the Ron Gregory (EHS) Atrium.

Security services is striving to provide you with the opportunity to get involved by joining our Campus Community Emergency Response Team (C-CERT). We will be hosting training daily from 8 a.m. to noon the week of May 7-12 in EHS 125.

Volunteers will be the first on-the-scene emergency responders to an event that happens on campus, especially when firefighters, police and public safety are overwhelmed with requests for help and could be slowed down by impassable streets and other damage.

In a large-scale disaster, George Fox needs to be prepared to be self-sufficient, too. This is why we are providing this training. Become part of the team and be prepared.

Sign up today for Run for Romania! Run for Romania will be held at 9 a.m. on Sunday, April 22, at the Newberg campus track. It is a 5K walk that will benefit the June Serve team’s trip to Romania and Moldova this summer.

In this year’s June Serve, a group of George Fox students and faculty that will partner with the organization Word Made Flesh, which seeks to serve Jesus amongst the poorest of the poor in Romania and Moldova.

Registration is $30 for adults and $15 for children (12 and under) and $15 for George Fox Students. To register, go to this link.

Several George Fox teams are involved in Northwest Conference tournaments this weekend. On Friday-Saturday, the track and field teams are in the NWC Championships at Pacific Lutheran in Parkland, Wash. On Saturday-Sunday, the softball team is in the NWC Tournament at Linfield in McMinnville, Ore.; the men’s tennis team is in the NWC Tournament at Whitman in Walla Walla, Wash.; the men’s golf team is in the NWC Championship Tournament in Kennewick, Wash.; and the women’s golf team is in the NWC Championship Tournament in Richland, Wash.

The International Club is hosting the last Chinese language class of the semester tonight (Thursday) from 7:20 to 8:30 p.m. in the International House/Cultural Center, where we had the class last time. The university’s engineering department will present its annual Engineering Expo this Friday, April 20, between 3 and 6 p.m. in the EHS Atrium on the Newberg campus.

The expo will include project displays, a robotics competition and lab demonstrations. Also featured will be projects from the program’s Senior Design and Servant Engineering teams. In addition, high school design projects will be featured. Refreshments will be provided. All are welcome!

On Thursday, April 19, just before Earth Day on April 22, students and members of our lunch club will enjoy menus items that will delight their taste buds but won’t raise the temperature of the planet.

Our low-carbon diet is a program created to acknowledge the significant connection between food and climate change and make scientifically based changes as a business.

On our annual “Low Carbon Diet Day,” we make a point of showing guests how they too can make smart decisions about their food choices. On April 19, we’ll modify our café’s menus to teach guests the five principles of going on a low-carbon diet:

1. You Bought It, You Eat It – Don’t Waste Food
2. Make “Seasonal and Regional” Your Food Mantra
3. Move Away From Beef and Cheese
4. Stop Flying Fish and Fruit – Don’t Buy Air-Freighted Food
5. If It’s Processed and Packaged, Skip It

Our guests will still have many menu choices but will be encouraged to taste new items that are more climate-friendly than some regular features.
