Marlee Zakrevsky was hired as a print services coordinator in late August. She joins the university as an employee after graduating from George Fox with a bachelor’s degree in allied health last April. She is a familiar face in the department, having worked in mail and print services since she began attending the school in August of 2007. Marlee was also active as an athlete, competing on the university’s track and field team from 2007 to 2012 and serving as a team captain in 2010-11. She lives in Dundee and attends Northside Community Church.

Charles Choi (Communication Arts) published an article, “Young Adults’ Perceptions of Intergenerational Communication: Mongolian and American Data,” in Volume 33 (2012) of Anthropology & Aging Quarterly.

Brent Weaver’s (Performing Arts) organ work “Fanfares and Antiphons” was featured as the opening piece on a recital at the National Cathedral in Washington, D.C., by the cathedral’s Artist in Residence Jeremy Filsell on Sunday, Sept. 9.

Laura Gifford (Scholar in Residence in History Department) published an article, “A Lesson in Volunteerism from George Romney,” in the Sept. 10 online issue of the History News Network.

Students:

Many of you have been ticketed for not having your permit on your vehicle, despite registering your vehicle. Your permit will NOT be delivered to your campus PO box; instead, you need to sign for it at Mail Services.

Also, if you commute to school and your chosen lot is full, there are FOUR commuter lots on campus: the Bauman lot, the Le Shana lot at the corner of Villa and Fulton streets, and two lots at the Villa Academic Complex. Those are the four lots for commuters, and no on-street parking is allowed for commuters.

Also, in Oregon, any curb painted yellow denotes a fire lane. There is no parking allowed at any time by a yellow curb or outside of the lined spots in the parking lots, as this puts your vehicle into the fire lane that emergency vehicles must have. Please save yourself some money and review the parking brochure that came with your permit!

Anthony Gill, a distinguished fellow at Baylor University’s Institute for Studies of Religion and host of the podcast “Research on Religion,” will speak at 5 p.m. Friday, Sept. 14, in Hoover 105.

Gill, a professor of political science at the University of Washington, specializes in political economy and religion and politics, with an emphasis on church-state relations, religious liberty and religious economies. He holds a PhD in political science from UCLA and was recipient of the University of Washington’s Distinguished Teaching Award in 1999.

George Fox’s College Republicans and the Charles G. Koch Foundation are cosponsoring Gill’s visit. He will speak on the topic “Why Christians should care about Liberty . . . and not just Religious Liberty.” Responses will be provided by professors Nate Peach and Tom Head.

Pizza and refreshments will be served at 5 p.m., and the talk will begin shortly thereafter.

Gill is the author of Rendering Unto Caesar: The Catholic Church and the State in Latin America and the award-winning The Political Origins of Religious Liberty.

On Wednesday, Sept. 12, immediately after chapel, the Newberg Fire Department, invited by Residence Life, will conduct its sixth annual “Burn in the Quad.” This is our shortest program, but one of the most engaging educational experiences of the year.

It will most likely distract some students from arriving on time for their classes. The fire will most likely start by 11:38 a.m. and will probably be over by 11:45 a.m.

Join us for chapel at 10:40 a.m. this morning (Monday) in Bauman Auditorium as Rusty St. Cyr, associate pastor of ministry and service, continues our “Origins” series. He will be speaking on Genesis 3:8-15.

The second installment of the “Islam and the West” series is scheduled for tonight (Monday) in Hoover 105. The session runs from 7 to 8 p.m. and features Paul Powers, associate professor of religious studies at Lewis & Clark College.

His lecture, entitled “The Development and Spread of Islam,” will explore the dynamics of Islamic expansion and conversion, as well as the nature and role of Islamic law throughout Islamic history.

Attendees will have the opportunity to ask questions. The same lecture is presented from 4:40 to 5:40 p.m.; however, it is recommended that the general public attend the evening session, if possible.

If you sing, or play drums, bass, acoustic and/or electric guitar, piano and keys, strings, brass and wind instruments or percussion – and want to glorify Jesus with your gifts – this e-nnouncement is for you!

The music department is offering a class to develop musicians into a worship ensemble. The class listing is MUSA 285. This group meets in preparation to lead chapel worship four to five times per semester.

This group will explore several styles of worship music, including orchestrated contemporary music, gospel and jazz, modernized hymns and more. Members of this group will read from sheet music when playing with the whole orchestra and have the opportunity to learn how to improvise and play with the group.

Rehearsal times are Wednesday nights from 9:15 to 11 p.m. in ROSS 210 (Band Room); we will also meet before chapel and other performances. The class meets for credit but is open to individuals who would want to audit the class.

I am recruiting two more students to be part of a team of four that compete with other universities in “Race to 2025,” an outdoor missions-focused adventure race Oct 12-14.

As a part of Wycliffe Bible Translator’s goal to spread the Word of God to every tribe, tongue and nation by 2025, this weekend adventure race in Montana seeks to inspire the next generation of missions-minded youth. Teams of four participate by informing their community about the global race to 2025, raising $2,000 in donations for current translation projects, and competing in an outdoor adventure race with eternal impact.
