Please be sure you have selected a meal plan no later than today, Wednesday, August 22, 2012 at 5 pm.

Students who do not select their meal plan by this date will be given the lowest meal plan that they are eligible for.

Student Life requires that EVERYONE confirm their meal plan to be certain that you have the meal plan that you are expecting.

You can select your meal plan and confirm which meal plan you have in your MyGFU account – STUDENT RESOURCES – UNIVERSITY FORMS.

The 21, 14, 10, 10 +Flex, 7 and No Meal Plan all roll over from the fall to the spring semesters.

The 35 Block and the All Flex Plan do NOT roll over. These convert to the No Meal Plan. If you want to renew the All Flex or 35 Block Plan you must add these meal plans to your account in MyGFU.

Please Note: All changes must be processed no later than Friday, September 7, 2012. However, students can always add a meal plan through out the semester by contacting Jere Witherspoon in the student life office.

Accommodations to the meal plan are provided only through documented medical conditions.

And now, a brief essay about the meal plan benefits by Dave Johnstone, associate dean of residence life:

The best part of a meal plan has nothing to do with the quality or nutrition of the food. The attractive part of eating on a meal plan is the opportunity to frequently connect with peers and classmates. Sharing a meal, conversation around the table, debriefing the day or anticipating what might unfold is really the gem of being on a meal plan. Historically and culturally communities have been built around food. I am not sure why it works, but sharing a meal is one of most significant ways to build a relationship, hence it strengthens our community. That in itself is a major benefit for being on the meal plan.

We always appreciate receiving the previous month’s time sheets and time-off reports early in the new month, but we are especially anxious to receive June’s each year. If you haven’t already, please send us your June time-off report or time sheet by this Thursday, July 12, so we can enter vacation and sick leave used in June. This will enable the folks in Financial Affairs to report fiscal year-end balances, which will help them finish their work of closing the books on 2011-12.

If you have any time-off reports or time sheets from earlier in 2011-12 that you have not yet submitted, please turn those in as well. If a supervisor’s absence will cause a delay, please send HR a copy and submit the original after it has both yours and your supervisor’s signatures.

The registrar’s office welcomed Aleida Polanco as an enrollment specialist in late June. She has worked for the past three months as a receptionist and administrator in the Sherwood School District. Before that, she worked as an administrator for Aflac Insurance for two years (2010-12) and served as a site director (2006-07) for Biola University’s STAR Academics program, which provides scholastically challenging classes for home-schooled high school students as they prepare for college. Aleida earned a bachelor’s degree in business and management from the University of Redlands in 1991. She lives in Sherwood with her husband, Vic; her daughter, Gizelle, a student at George Fox; and her son, Victor, who attends Sherwood High School. She attends Countryside Community Church in Sherwood with her family.

The adult degree program welcomed Emily Sheffield as a recruitment and enrollment counselor last week. Since 2004, she has worked in various capacities for Nordstrom in the Portland area – as a department manager (2012), assistant department manager (2011), management intern (2010) and sales associate (2004-09). She also has work experience in higher education, working for VP Recruitment of Eugene, Ore., as a recruiter for the Chi Omega Chapter at the University of Oregon (2009-11). Emily earned a bachelor’s degree in business administration from the University of Oregon in 2011. She lives in Portland and is active at Solid Rock Church.

The School of Business welcomed Ty Sohlman last week as an admissions counselor for the MBA program. For the past five years she has worked as a recruiter of high school students for the Art Institute of Portland. The three years prior to that, she was the marketing director for an orthopaedic consulting business in Portland. Ty earned a bachelor’s degree in communications from Western Oregon University in 2001. She lives in Tigard with her husband, John, and their two children: daughter Harper (3) and son John (8 months). Ty and her family attend Horizon Community Church in Tualatin.

Jenny Zaganiacz joined the Office of Student Life last week as the administrative assistant for Housing and Residence Life. A George Fox alumna from the class of 2011, her prior work experience includes time as a receptionist and serving as the executive assistant to the president for Oregon Electric Group (2011-12). Jenny holds a bachelor’s degree in business administration. She lives in Newberg with her husband, John, and attends Grace Chapel in Wilsonville.

Tamara Cissna (Marketing Communications) is leaving the university this Friday after serving at George Fox for nine years. She has accepted the position of associate vice president of marketing and communication at Earlham College in Indiana. A farewell reception for her is scheduled from between 3 and 4:30 p.m. Friday, July 13, in the Pennington House courtyard.

Joel Perez (Dean of Transitions and Inclusion) spoke at an event, the ReNew Campus Leadership Forum, at Cedarville University in Ohio in May. Joel served as a facilitator in a forum that discussed the complexities of diversity and reconciliation. The event was geared toward Christian college faculty and staff who help determine their university’s policies and strategies in regard to ethnic diversity. In addition, Joel was a faculty member at Duke Divinity School’s summer institute on reconciliation May 28 to June 2. His seminar was titled “Reconciliation and Academic Institutions.”

Ed Higgins (English) published a poem, “Ok, ok, so I concede,” in the May 2012 issue of The Shotglass Journal, an online journal dedicated to short poetry.

Laura Gifford (Scholar in Residence/History) received a Bordin-Gillette Researcher Travel Fellowship to conduct research at the Bentley Historical Library at the University of Michigan. She plans to look into the George Romney Papers, and secondarily, at the papers of 1970s-era Michigan governor William Milliken.

Brian McLaughlin and Tim Goodfellow (IT) received a Northwest Academic Computing Consortium Hugi Exemplary Practice Award for their work on the iGFU mobile portal project. The Hugi Award Program recognizes individuals or groups whose outstanding work in technology has benefited NWACC member institutions. More about the award is on the NWACC website.

For those who place supply orders through our online sites with Office Depot and/or Staples, I wanted to give you a heads-up that an order must meet a minimum order value (MOV) threshold before it can be processed.

The minimum for Office Depot is $50 and the minimum for Staples is $75. When placing an order, you may continue to add items to your shopping cart until you reach the MOV threshold. Once the threshold has been reached, you can proceed to checkout.

All the power will be shut off in the Villa Academic Complex on Tuesday, July 3, from 10 a.m. to noon. This is the final work needed to complete the physical therapy remodel project.

George Fox is honored to once again to partner with the Oregon Special Olympics State Games as a host site.  The Games are in need of volunteers – please consider serving the community at this great event.

The Summer Games are the state championship competitions in the sports of athletics (track & field), bocce, golf and softball for Special Olympics Oregon athletes.  All athletes and teams have trained in their hometowns for 8 weeks prior to the Summer Games and have qualified to compete at the Summer State Games at a regional level competition.

Date:  July 14 – 15, 2012

Sports:   Athletics (Track & Field), Bocce, Golf Softball

Positions Include:  Sports venues—timers, scorekeepers, runners, announcers, staging, results, forecaddies, judges, spotters, awards, officials, umpires, lunch distribution, set-up, tear-down.  There are also opportunities to help at Olympic Town, Healthy Athletes, lunch support and many other things.

Time:   Generally, volunteer shifts are 4—5 hours on either Saturday or Sunday.

Age:  You must be 16 years or older to volunteer independently. Children 12 – 15 years old must volunteer with a parent.

Training:  We will have key volunteers provide training at the beginning of your shift.
