Don’t forget the first installment of “Islam and the West,” scheduled for tonight (Monday) in Hoover 105. The session runs from 7 to 8 p.m. and features Shahriar Ahmed, from Bilal Mosque in Beaverton. He will cover the basic beliefs and practices of Islam and its early history.

Attendees will have the opportunity to ask questions about what Muslims believe and how they practice their faith. The same lecture is presented from 4:40 to 5:40 p.m.; however, it is recommended that the general public attend the evening session, if possible.

Serve Day is this Wednesday Sept. 5! The entire university community will unite together for our 14th annual Serve Day, participating in a variety of service opportunities in Newberg and the surrounding area. Here is the schedule:

7:30-8:20 a.m. – Continental Breakfast on the quad lawn and make your lunch
8:30 a.m. – Kickoff celebration on the quad with a time of worship
9 a.m. – Gather at your # post and leave
Noon – Eat lunch with your group at the service site
4 p.m. – Return to campus for dinner, music and the Activities & Church Fair on the quad (connect with our local churches and clubs on campus)
4:30-6:30 p.m. – Complimentary picnic dinner for the George Fox community! Bring a picnic blanket to spread out on the quad and relax!

The cost of breakfast, lunch, and dinner is covered for all George Fox students, even if you are not on a university meal plan. If you would like to invite family or friends from outside the Fox community to the evening celebration and would like to purchase dinner tickets, please fill out this form.

Serve Day is required for all undergraduate students. The university will be shut down during Serve Day, which means all daytime classes are canceled and campus offices are closed (evening classes are not canceled for Serve Day). If you live on campus, contact your RA for more information about your Serve Day assignment.

The BlueZone Store and the Textbook Annex will be closed on Wednesday, Sept. 5, for Serve Day. We encourage you to participate in Serve Day. We will be open the remainder of the week.

Guitar lessons and classes are being offered this fall at George Fox!

BEGINNING CLASS GUITAR (MUSI 250-A) is offered for those new to the guitar who want to learn in a fun and low pressure group setting (Tuesdays/Thursdays, 9:40-10:30 a.m.). Learn to play everything from songs played chapel to popular tunes on the radio.

PRIVATE LESSONS/APPLIED GUITAR (MUSA 105/305 GT) is offered to bring your playing skills to the next level. One-on-one lessons cover beginners all the way to very experienced players. Sign up and learn new skills and techniques. All styles are covered including rock, blues, jazz, worship, folk, etc.

Lessons are taught by George Fox guitar professor Dave Iula. Performing with many of Portland’s best worship teams (Beaverton Foursquare, Southlake Church, Rolling Hills, Imago Dei Community) as well as Portland’s finest clubs (Jimmy Mak’s, The Blue Monk, Mississippi Studios, The Roseland), he can help take your playing to the next level.

Shahriar Ahmed, from Bilal Mosque in Beaverton, will present “Beliefs and Beginnings” from 7 to 8 p.m. His presentation will cover the basic beliefs and practice of Islam and its early history. Attendees will have the opportunity to ask questions about what Muslims believe and how they practice their faith.

Although designed for seniors as a forum to discuss a significant public issue of current concern, the LACI series is open to all at no charge. The same lecture is presented from 4:40 to 5:40 p.m. each week; however, it is recommended that the general public attend the evening session, if possible.

This is the first in a series that will meet each Monday through the semester. Details on future LACI lectures will be provided regularly in e-nnouncements.

Interested in auditioning for the fall theatre production? Auditions for The Servant of Two Masters will be from 7 to 10 p.m. Monday, Sept. 3, in Wood-Mar Auditorium. Come ready and dressed to move! The evening will include a Commedia Dell’Arte workshop, improv, group games and movement exercises.

Director CarlosAlexis Cruz will work with three groups over the evening for an hour each. Sign up for an hour time slot on the audition board in the Lemmons Center.

Please be aware that the Early Action deadline for undergraduate admissions applications has changed from Dec. 1 to Nov. 15. Any prospective fall 2013 students need to complete their admissions application by the new deadline to be considered for February’s Scholarship Competition.

There will also be a supplemental scholarship application due Nov. 15 to make students eligible for consideration. Any questions can be directed to Mandee Wilmot at ext. 2248.
