Career Services is hosting the Seminary Fair Plus on Tuesday, Oct. 23, in the lower lobby of the Hoover Academic Building between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m.

A variety of seminaries as well as George Fox graduate programs will be on hand to connect with prospective students who desire to be equipped for ministry or higher education through graduate programs. This event is a great opportunity to meet with recruiters to investigate different career choices and seminary opportunities for the future.

National Anthem auditions will be held at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 30, in the gym classroom. Anyone who is interested in singing during basketball games is invited to come and audition.

Just a reminder that Homecoming and Family Weekend are just around the corner (Oct. 26-28)! We are especially excited about a new event – the Homecoming Coronation & Variety Show scheduled for Friday, Oct. 26, from 8 to 10 p.m. in Bauman Auditorium.

This event will feature entertainment from students, alumni and families and will include the presentation and crowning of the homecoming court. There is also a Barbecue Tailgate Party scheduled for Saturday from noon to 3 p.m. at the Austin Sports Complex, featuring food, games, inflatables and more.

On Tuesday, Nov. 13, the university will host a Cultural Fair – and we’d love to give you the opportunity to share your culture at the big event. On Tuesday, Oct. 23, we will host an informational meeting for those who wish to host a table at the fair that showcases their culture. If you are interested, join us at 6:15 p.m. in the International Center/Cultural House.

The Cultural Fair will feature students from Asia, Europe, Africa and other parts of America sharing something about their own culture. You do not need to go to other countries or places to experience a different culture – just come to the Cultural Fair. You will have a chance to enjoy wonderful displays, learn something new, and of course experience delicious food from all over the world!

Bon Appetit has set a goal to reach a $3,000 donation for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. One of the many projects we have planned is an opportunity for you to get a jump-start on your holiday preparations while donating to this worthy charity.

Before the holiday season gets too busy, take some time out to join us for an afternoon of everything holiday! The projects will include gift tags, gift bags, gift card holders, a Christmas banner, a Christmas ornament, and gifts to make for friends or co-workers.

Bon Appetit will provide snacks and music to add to the festivities. Bring a friend, sister, daughter or mom. Reservations will close when the 30th person gets their payment to Wendy Meinhardt. Reservations and payment must be made by Saturday, Oct. 27, so there is time to order supplies.

Can a serve our global neighbors by listening, sharing stories, and living alongside them?

The answer is of course an emphatic yes. Especially in a culture as relationally and communally focused as China.

In May of 2013, a small group of GFU students will be sent on a three-week trip to China to listen, share and live alongside the people of China. They will get the chance to visit Chinese college students’ homes, see historic sites, and more than anything, gain a perspective on the beautiful life that is lived by the people of China. However, this is not a tourist trip. The goal is not only to see, but to “incarnate” the gospel of Christ.

The second faculty “Coffee & Conversation” of the fall is titled “Assigning Students Work: How Much Is Too Much?” Join us this morning (Friday) from 10:40 to 11:30 a.m. in the Executive Dining Room.

“Coffee & Conversation” sessions address “burrs under the saddle” – those persistent, annoying problems and challenges that seem to come with the work but drain an inordinate amount of time and energy. Student complaints about too heavy of a workload may be an issue you struggle with. How do you decide what is fair to expect? Do you expect too much? Not enough? How can you tell?

• Come if you wonder how other faculty approach this question.
• Come if you are looking for tools to gauge workload fairly.
• Come if you have all the answers.
• Come if all you have are questions.
• Come if you just want to have some free coffee and goodies and listen to the discussion.

The university community is invited to this fall’s faculty lecture, to be presented by Professor of Art Doug Campbell, on Tuesday, Oct. 23, in Hoover 105.

The event will begin with a 5 p.m. reception and presentation by Richter Scholar students. Then, at 5:30 p.m., Doug will present “Confessions of a Non-Specialist,” in which he will discuss his studio art, exhibit and writing activities. Doug was named recipient of the Undergraduate Faculty Achievement Award for Research and Scholarship in 2012. He teaches art history survey, drawing, printmaking, painting, 20th century art history, and “Art and Christ.”

Winter Serve 2013!  (Jan. 7-12, 2013)

Here is a summary of the trips planned.

Portland
The trip will spend a week in downtown Portland serving and learning from the house-less. We will partner with several outreach ministries to see how each is reaching out to the community. We will also serve people’s needs directly with food and supplies and listening ears to hear their struggles and stories.

Seattle
A trek north to the Emerald City to partner with local ministries in the Seattle area focusing on service in urban communities.

Twin Rocks Camp, Rockaway Beach, Ore.
This almost monastic service opportunity has a special focus on “discipleship in the Way of Jesus,” as well as practical service benefiting the ongoing ministries of this Friends Camp & Conference Center.  Student leaders from the SpiL House will abound, but all are invited to participate in this “SpiLgrimage” to meet with Christ on the coast.

The Project Request procedures have been changed. A rationale defending the project and signatures of the department head, building monitor, and VP/provost are all required on the submittal form. Cost Center and account number must also be included.

Plant Services is first and foremost a maintenance organization. A project will be scheduled in deference to critical maintenance needs. The schedule for your project must be flexible to accommodate these needs. If you can agree with these requirements, we would be happy to accommodate your project.

When the form has been signed and returned, a project manager will be assigned and will generate an estimate. Signatures will then be obtained from the Plant Services director and the chief financial officer.

Bruin Pride business capstone is hosting a t-shirt design contest and we need YOU to vote.

We will have a table set up in the Bruin’s Den from 11:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m. Thursday, October 18 for voting. The winning design will be the first shirt produced and sold by our business, Bruin Pride.

The campus community is invited to the next installment of the “Islam and the West” Liberal Arts and Critical Issues series this Monday, Oct. 22, in Hoover 105.

The session runs from 7 to 8 p.m. and features Paul Marshall, senior fellow at the Hudson Institute, who will speak on the topic “Blasphemy and Free Speech.” Marshall’s presentation will cover how authoritarian governments and extremist forces use the legal process to curtail free speech through accusations of blasphemy while open discussions of Islam in democracies are sometimes limited by de facto rules and expectations.

The same session is presented from 4:40 to 5:40 p.m.; however, it is recommended that the general public attend the evening session, if possible.

Know of students who could use some tips on writing research papers? Encourage them to attend “Steps to Writing a Successful Research Paper” from 10:40 to 11:30 a.m. Friday, Oct. 19, in Hoover 105.

The workshop, hosted by the Academic Resource Center (ARC), will feature Gary Tandy, professor of English, and Jane Scott, public services librarian. Gary will provide writing tips and Jane a step-by-step guide to campus and Internet resources for research papers.

Research papers can seem overwhelming, but following a step-by-step, organized approach can make your life much less stressful.

The Academic Resource Center (ARC) workshop on “Steps to a Writing a Successful Research Paper” will be offered on Friday, Oct. 19, from 10:40 to 11:30 a.m. in Hoover 105.
