Goldfish up for adoption

Do you crave companionship? Unconditional devotion? You need a goldfish! Or a troubling of Goldfish! (I don’t know why a group of goldfish is called a “troubling,” since they are delightful companions.)

Come to the lab (EHS 202) during office hours (7 a.m. to 5 p.m.) and take yours home today. Ziploc travel containers provided for your new friend’s comfort and containment. I’ll meet you by the aquarium if you need help. Adoptions open until all find homes.

If you are finishing your degree this semester and have taken a Federal Stafford loan and/or Federal Teach Grant during your time here at Fox, you are required to complete Exit Counseling. You can take care of this right away to avoid any last-minute rush before graduation.

Please have your FAFSA PIN # ready and go to nslds.ed.gov and complete one or both of the exit counseling sessions there. Student Financial Services will receive a confirmation that you’ve completed it.

Editing workshop scheduled for this morning

Don’t forget the Academic Resource Center workshop, “The Most Common Editing Errors – And What To Do About Them,” today (Friday) from 10:40 to 11:30 a.m. in Hoover 105. Bill Jolliff, professor of English, will lead the session.

In this workshop, Bill will identify the 10 errors that professors are most likely to mark on student work, and he’ll demonstrate how to fix them.

Trio Ascendo3 leads master class, performs concert Friday

The music department is sponsoring a one-day residency by the trio Ascendo3, featuring saxophonists Joseph Wytko and Anna Marie Wytko and pianist Walter Cosand. The ensemble will lead a master class for performers and composers today (Friday) at 4 p.m. in Bauman Auditorium, and will present a concert this evening at 7:30 p.m., also in Bauman. All are invited to both events with no admission charge.

Ascendo3 will perform music for saxophones and piano, including arrangements of music by Vivaldi, Beethoven and Poulenc. Dr. Joseph Wytko will also perform “Psalm” for solo saxophone by GFU faculty composer Brent Weaver.

Dr. Joseph Wytko is professor emeritus at Arizona State University and has performed as a soloist and with ensembles all over the world. Dr. Anna Marie Wytko is an assistant professor at Kansas State University and has also performed concerts around the country; her appearance is supported in part by the Yamaha Corporation.

First ‘Table Talk’ session discusses multiculturalism today

Soldiers offer their perspectives at next ‘Islam and the West’ session

Feel free to join us for the sixth installment of the “Islam and the West” Liberal Arts and Critical Issues series on Monday, Oct. 8, in Hoover 105. The session runs from 7 to 8 p.m. and features George Fox alumni who have served in the military in Islamic countries.

“A Soldier’s Perspective” will allow active military personnel and veterans who served in Islamic lands to share their stories. The same session is presented from 4:40 to 5:40 p.m.; however, it is recommended that the general public attend the evening session, if possible.

Free flu shots available for employees with Kaiser or Pioneer coverage

Although you can’t get free flu shots at our Health and Counseling Center (because it is not a contracted Regence or Kaiser provider), Kaiser members can go to Kaiser to get yours free, and Pioneer members can go to practically any pharmacy/grocery in town for a free flu shot.

You just need to ask first if they are a contracted provider for Regence BCBS and show your insurance card. If the answer is yes, your flu shot is free (except for that little bit of “ouch”).

Ushers needed for theatre’s production of ‘The Servant of Two Masters’

Campus group plans to walk in ‘Out of the Darkness’ event Saturday

October 2nd, 2012

If you’re interested in walking with a cause, “Out of the Darkness” is this Saturday, Oct. 6. We are meeting at 7:45 a.m. in the Bauman Auditorium parking so that we can get to the World Trade Center in Portland by 8:30 a.m. to catch the opening festivities and start the walk at 10 a.m.

The walk is about two hours long and is free. We only ask $2 of each person to cover the cost of gas. Contact David Brooks at dbrooks11@georgefox.edu to learn more about the event.
