Don’t miss Dr. Mathias Zahniser in the Global Issues Chapel this morning (Wednesday) at 10:40 a.m. in Bauman Auditorium. Dr. Zahniser is currently a scholar in residence at Greenville college and is an expert on the relationship between Islam and Christianity.

After chapel, students and faculty are invited to a talk-back session with Dr. Zahniser in the Cap and Gown Room at noon.

The Portland Center fundraiser for the Northeast Portland Backpack Lunch Program beings today (Wednesday).

In the 2011-12 school year, the Backpack Lunch Program collected donations for 5,000 weekend sack lunches for children in need. This all-volunteer run program provides enough “kid-friendly” food for two meals per weekend. It serves more than 170 students at four Northeast Portland schools.

Oregon hunger statistics are higher than the national average. We can’t solve this problem completely, but our community can make a world of difference to this group of children!

From Oct. 31 through Nov. 7, please bring your food donations to the bins provided in the lobby of the Portland Center. Suggested items include: cans of chili, soup, ravioli in meat sauce, boxes of mac & cheese, small juice boxes (100% juice only, no foil containers), individual serving fruit cups, healthy snacks, small packages of dried fruits, oatmeal cups, etc.

Monetary donations can be made at the Information Desk. A $100 donation sponsors a child for weekend meals for the entire school year. Donation checks made out to Fremont United Methodist Church will be tax deductible. More information is available at this link.

Are you interested in being in the George Fox Dance Company? We are an intermediate-advanced jazz/lyrical-focused group that occasionally performs for chapel, concerts, and other events. We see dance as a way of worshiping our Lord, Jesus Christ. Pick up an application from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 11, and from 7 to 9 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 13, in the Wheeler dance studio.

Delays in delivery of packages and mail for the East Coast will be occurring over the next few days due to Hurricane Sandy. Carriers are working diligently to keep on track but are exercising caution for the safety of their personnel, equipment and facilities. Guaranteed shipping times are not honored at this time.

As you all know, Hurricane Sandy is beginning to hit the East Coast. We feel it is important to cover families, businesses, churches, and everyone else involved in prayer. If you would like to join, there will be space for group prayer in the Prayer Chapel from 10 to 11 a.m. this morning (Tuesday).

Bring your change to Faith & Film tonight (Tuesday)! There will be a group of students selling concessions before the film as a fundraiser for Urbana, a missions conference in St. Louis that they will be attending.

Concessions will be sold from 8:30 to 9:15 p.m. At 9 p.m., we will watch The Music Within in the Cap and Gown Room. Chapel credit is available.

Come to Cap and Gown at noon on Thursday, Nov. 1, to discuss a poem by Sherman Alexie that describes harmful stereotypes of Native Americans. This event is the second discussion of the “Table Talk” series, a monthly conversation group that gives students a safe place to discuss diversity and multiculturalism.

Sign and submit your October time sheet to your supervisor.

The last day of October is Wednesday, Oct. 31. Please turn in your October time sheets to your supervisor at the end of your last shift of the month. Be sure your name and ID number is typed or printed legibly at the top, it is complete and accurate, and you have signed it.

Payday is on Thursday, Nov. 15. If you forget to turn in your time sheet on time, you may not get paid on the 15th.

Registration for Professional Preview Day begins Friday, Nov. 2! If you would like help registering or selecting a professional for Professional Preview Day, a career services representative will be available in the Bruin Den on Fridays from 12:30-2 p.m. to help you.

You can also stop by the Career Services office on the first floor of Stevens for assistance during normal business hours. All are welcome!

The campus community is invited to a public lecture to be presented tonight (Tuesday) by Dr. Mathias Zahniser, a scholar in residence at Greenville College and an expert on the relationship between Islam and Christianity. He will present “Islam and Democracy: Faith Sees Positively and Thinks Hopefully” from 7 to 9 p.m. in Hoover 105.

In addition, Zahniser will speak in chapel on Wednesday, Oct. 31, at 10:40 a.m. in Bauman Auditorium on the topic “Was Cornelius a Muslim? Faith Sees Inclusively, Knowing God Works Consistently.” That will be followed by a talk-back session in the Cap and Gown Room at noon.

Zahniser wrote the book The Mission and Death of Jesus in Islam and Christianity and is currently working on a chapter for a book edited by David Emmanuel Singh on issues related to the Incarnation in the context of Christian-Muslim faith sharing.

Don’t forget tonight’s (Tuesday’s) “Non-Taxing Tax Plan Discussion,” scheduled for 7 p.m. in EHS 102. The event is being hosted by the Accounting Club.
