A special evening for George Fox basketball fans who want to get an early look at the Bruin men’s and women’s teams for the 2012-13 seasons are invited to a “Bruin Hoopfest” when the teams practice at 8 p.m. tonight (Thursday) in the Wheeler Sports Center’s Miller Gym. Admission is free.

Fans can come to watch both Bruin teams as they engage in dunking contests, half-court shot competitions, and a couple of 12-minute inter-squad scrimmages. Free prizes for the fans will also be given away.

Join us for the opening reception of Doug Campbell’s exhibit, “Facing the Light: The Art of Douglas Campbell,” today (Thursday) from 5 to 7 p.m. in both the Lindgren and Minthorne galleries. Doug will also present a talk about the exhibit from 4:10 to 5 p.m. in Hoover 102.

The campus community is invited to the final installment of the “Islam and the West” Liberal Arts and Critical Issues lecture series this Monday, Nov. 5, in Hoover 105.

The session runs from 7 to 8 p.m. and features Patrick and Becky Ray, who lived in Jordan for several years. They will share their experiences of immersion within a Muslim society and their thoughts on the intersection of Christianity and Islam. Patrick is an assistant professor of civil engineering at George Fox, and Becky is an international public health consultant.

The same session is presented from 4:40 to 5:40 p.m.; however, it is recommended that the general public attend the evening session, if possible.

The board of trustees recently strongly affirmed and approved the “Theology of Racial and Ethnic Diversity Statement.” The statement can be found at this link on the website.

Grace Baptist Church will be offering a service to pick up students from the George Fox campus and bring them to church on Sundays. A reminder for this time of year: If your outgoing letters get even one drop of rain on the envelope flap, Mail Services has problems in processing the envelopes through the meter. It can destroy your envelopes when they jam in the sealer or it will post two letters as one, wasting postage. Please cover your mail when transporting it to Mail Services.

Congratulations to admissions! Their student employees brought over three trays of mail in a heavy rain and did not get the envelopes wet. We appreciate their excellent transport of mail. Thank you, admissions!

The university will serve as host for a preview of the Portland Youth Philharmonic’s annual fall concert at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 7, in Bauman Auditorium.

The program, led by conductor and music director David Hattner, includes Richard Wagner’s Suite from Act III of Die Meistersinger, Dvorak’s Symphony No. 3 in E-flat Major, and the West Coast premiere of Jim Stephenson’s clarinet concerto Liquid Melancholy with David Shifrin, clarinetist and music director of Chamber Music Northwest.

The event is free and open to the public. No tickets are required. For more information, call 503-223-5939. This concert is a preview of PYP’s annual fall concert to be held in the Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall on Saturday, Nov. 10, at 7:30 p.m.

This is a reminder to students to be keeping track of how many chapel credits you have. Students should have at least 12 of the 20 required met at this point. You can check the chapel site for information on speakers, the calendar, or to answer any questions you might have about chapel attendance.
