The university invites the campus community to “One Million Bones,” a large-scale national social arts project organized to raise awareness of genocides and mass atrocities going on in the world, this Thursday, Jan. 24, in the Ron Gregory (EHS) Atrium.
The event, scheduled from 6 to 9 p.m., calls for participants to create bones of clay that will be part of a collaborative installation of 1 million bones on the National Mall in Washington, D.C., June 8-10. For every bone created, $1 is being donated to the humanitarian group CARE International for the organization’s work in Somalia and the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
George Fox’s Center for Peace and Justice and Center for Global Studies are co-sponsoring the event on campus, and the art department is kiln-firing all the bones created. There is no charge to participate, and clay will be provided.

The campus community is invited to the opening reception for an art exhibit in Minthorne Gallery on Thursday, Jan. 24. Tony Caltabiano’s work will be on display in the gallery beginning Thursday and running through Thursday, Feb. 28.
An opening reception for the show, entitled “Three Oceans,” is scheduled from 5 to 7 p.m. Prior to the reception, the artist will speak from 4:10 to 5 p.m. in Hoover 105.

Linda Samek (School of Education) and others received a $740,000 United States Department of Education grant for the Center of Algebraic Thinking, a collaborative four-school math education project designed to inform new teachers concerning students’ struggles with algebra. The center includes an online encyclopedia of algebraic thinking, a catalog of formative assessment problems, a database of technological tools, iPad apps, modules for math methods courses that incorporate research, and a collaborative social network for teachers of algebra. As a result, four universities (George Fox, Willamette, Pacific University and Western Oregon University) will use restructured math methods courses that lead to increased pre-service teachers’ knowledge, skills, and dispositions toward students’ algebraic thinking.

Ed Higgins (English) recently published four science fiction poems – “The Visitors,†“formation of a black hole,†“Science Fiction†and “To begin with†– in a new British science fiction publication, Theurgy Magazine. In addition, his piece “Orca Pod†was published in the Jan. 14 issue of The Faircloth Review, an online literary and arts journal.

Synopsis
For a century and a half, the leading gospel-composition theory among New Testament scholars (the Synoptic Hypothesis) has sought to explain possible relations between Matthew, Mark and Luke — leaving out the Gospel of John. In recent years, Anderson sought to advance a theory that explains the place of John among the gospels.
Seeing John and Mark as having two different perspectives from day one, Anderson’s “Bi-Optic Hypothesis†identifies particular relations between John and each of the other gospel traditions, leading to a new overall theory of gospel composition. Paul will outline this theory and its implications.

The installation will serve as a symbol of solidarity with the millions of victims and survivors of ongoing conflict in places like the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Somalia – and as a visible petition to raise awareness of the issue and call upon the government to take much-needed and long overdue action.
For every bone created, the Bezos Family Foundation is donating $1, up to $500,000, to the humanitarian group CARE International for relief support and for rebuilding programs that benefit young people in hard-hit areas.
George Fox’s Center for Peace and Justice and art department are teaming up to host the event on campus. There is no charge to participate, and clay will be provided.
The national effort is being organized by Students Rebuild, an organization dedicated to mobilizing young people worldwide to connect, learn and take action on critical global issues. CARE International is a leading relief and development non-governmental organization fighting global poverty.

An all-employee meeting is scheduled for this Thursday, Jan. 24, from 3:30 to 5 p.m. in Bauman Auditorium (please note location change).
The meeting will include an update on the Stoffer Family Stadium project, including a construction timeline and renderings, and a presentation on how Bruin athletics (track and field and football), community events and student activities will benefit from this new facility.

The Academic Resource Center (ARC) will be open for business starting Tuesday, Jan. 22. Hours are Monday-Thursday, 1-10 p.m., and Friday, 1-4 p.m.
If you would like an ARC consultant to visit your classroom and let your students know how the ARC can help them, please contact us and we can schedule a classroom visit. We can tailor class presentations to your particular discipline, explaining to students how an ARC consultant might help them with APA style, for example, or with writing the next great American novel.
The ARC will also be offering writing groups this semester for students who would like to meet weekly, or every other week, to discuss ongoing writing projects. These groups are facilitated by ARC consultants, and provide writers with structured feedback about their work.
Finally, if you are requiring students to attend the ARC this semester, please let us know so that we can be prepared for your students and their assignment(s). In an effort to be more “green,†the custodial department has installed new roll towel dispensers in restrooms across campus in an effort to save money by reducing the amount of time spent restocking multi-fold towels (many dispensers will no longer have both types of towels).
This change eliminates the need to replace batteries yearly in the old units and allows for the purchase of a more natural brown towel that is made from 100 percent recycled material.
There are a couple things you need to keep in mind when using these new machines.
