If you haven’t had a chance to order your 20-pound box of delicious oranges from a baseball player yet, there’s still time. The order goes in on Tuesday morning, Nov. 27.

Students: If you are unable to make it home for Thanksgiving, then we have an event for you. A student-run Thanksgiving will be taking place on Thursday, Nov. 22. You can come and stay for as long as you desire.

Help cook all day or just come for the meal and night festivities. NO NEED TO BRING ANYTHING, Just yourself. You are more than welcome to bring food or something else (a board game, maybe), but only if you have the ability to do so. Seriously, you can come and just eat, hang out, and enjoy the festive company of others.

It will be held right across the street from Lemmons at 603 N. Meridian St. (big white house on the corner).

Invite any and all students–I do not want anyone to have Thanksgiving by themselves! Have it in warm and friendly company. Make new friends.

Possible activities:

• Swing dancing
• Watch a movie
• Cooking
• Crafts
• Eating
• Games
• More eating
• Getting to know others
• Chilling out
• Telling stories
• Whatever else we can imagine!

My hope and dream is to create a friendly environment where students can feel like they are at home for Thanksgiving. Though I know that may not be possible, I want to get close.

Patty Vanier joined the Murdock Learning Resource Center library staff as a circulation coordinator last week. For the past two years she has worked as a student store coordinator at Southwest Christian School in Beaverton. Prior to that, she served as principal of Wilsonville Christian Academy from 2000 to 2005. Patty earned certificates in early childhood education and early childhood education administration from Vanguard University in 2003. She lives in Beaverton with her husband of 25 years, Mike. They have two sons who attend George Fox: Justin, a junior, and Jake, a freshman. Patty is active at Southwest Bible Church, where she serves as a women’s council member, Moms 2 Moms ministry coordinator and welcome center volunteer.

Cheryl Pippin (Nursing) left the university earlier this month.

Cherice Bock (Religious Studies/Seminary) is writing a paper, “Wisdom and Love: A Theological Basis for Quaker Ecological Action,” for this month’s American Academy of Religion meetings in Chicago. The paper, for the Quaker Studies Group at AAR, is coauthored by Rebecca Artinian-Kaiser.

Tom Head (Economics) was the keynote speaker for an all-day workshop on “Envisioning an Ethical Economy” presented by Ecumenical Ministries of Oregon in Portland on Nov. 17.

Ed Higgins’ (English) prose poem “Finding Paradise” is in the current issue of The Red River Review, a Texas-based online quarterly literary journal.

Michael MacLeod (Political Science and International Studies) made a presentation, “Scaling Environmental Sustainability Through Investor-Driven Financial Market Governance: Shareholder Activism in Canada and the US,” at the Sixth Annual International Conference on Business & Sustainability at Portland State University on Nov. 9. His review of William T. Cavanaugh’s “Migrations of the Holy: God, State and the Political Meaning of the Church” will be published in the next edition of the academic journal Politics and Religion.

Mark McLeod-Harrison’s (Religious Studies) article, “Relaxed Naturalism and Caring About the Truth,” will be published in the spring 2013 issue of Forum Philosophicum.

The Bruin Den will be closing after lunch at 1:30 p.m. this Wednesday, Nov. 21, due to the Thanksgiving holiday. The Villa Cafe will close at 2 p.m. on Tuesday and will close at 1:30 p.m. on Wednesday.

Both cafes will reopen on Monday, Nov. 26, at their normal time.

With the upcoming Thanksgiving holiday, Bon Appetit will be changing hours for those students who will be staying on campus. Here is the schedule:

• Wednesday dinner: 4:30-5:30 p.m.
• Thursday brunch: 10:30-11 a.m.
• Dinner: 4-4:30 p.m.
• Friday brunch: 10:30-11 a.m.

The third faculty “Coffee & Conversation” of the fall, titled “Collaboration: Shifting to Hybrid Teaching,” is set from 10:40 to 11:30 a.m. the Wednesday after Thanksgiving, Nov. 28, in Hoover 104. Melanie Springer Mock and Gary Tandy will share their experiences in leading the discussion.

This “Coffee & Conversation” session features the collaborative approach Melanie and Gary are using with their Writing 110 students, including implementing a hybrid instructional approach. Students spend 75 minutes with their instructors each week, and then complete the rest of their work online, keeping public blogs, commenting on their peers’ work, reading essays by professional writers, and managing their documents through Google Drive.

• Come if you are using hybrid approaches.
• Come if you are exploring hybrid teaching.
• Come if you have all the answers.
• Come if all you have are questions.
• Come if you just want to have some free coffee and goodies and listen to the discussion.

“Selling Strategies for a Recovering Economy” will be the topic when Jeff Schneider speaks at the monthly Newberg meeting of the Christian Chamber of the Northwest on Tuesday, Nov. 27, at the Villa Academic Complex. The meeting is from 7:30 to 9 a.m.

“The things that used to work in the pre-recession economy may not work like they used to,” said Schneider, who will outline new concepts for effective sales.

Schneider is president of Portland-based Schneider Training Solutions. He is an authorized agent for Sandler Training, which Schneider describes as the leader for innovative training solutions for sellers and managers nationwide. Schneider has trained thousands of salespeople and sales managers up and down the West Coast, on topics relating to sales, sales management and personal development.

Coffee, tea and pastries will be available at the meeting, which is free for Chamber members who R.S.V.P. at cccnw.net. A $5 donation is suggested from non-members and guests who R.S.V.P.

Philosophy professor Phil Smith will speak on “varieties of faith” at an “Intellectual Feast” today (Tuesday) from 4 to 5 p.m. in the second-floor Hoover Lounge (Room 250). Sponsored by the Religious Studies Department, the talk is part of Phil’s longer work – Why Faith is a Virtue – soon to be published by Wipf and Stock.

The library will be on holiday hours for the Thanksgiving holiday. Monday and Tuesday we will be open our regular hours of 7:30 a.m. to 11 p.m. On Wednesday, Nov. 21, our hours will be 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.

We will be closed Thursday, Friday and Saturday, and will reopen the evening of Sunday, Nov. 25, from 6 to 10 p.m.

The university community is invited to drop by the EHS and Hoover atriums today (Monday) between noon and 4 p.m. to view the research exhibits created by students in the Liberal Arts and Critical Issues course this semester.

The event will give LACI students the opportunity to present their research and offer practical solutions regarding the challenges of Islam and the West.
