Three professors in the university’s Graduate Department of Counseling presented at the Western Association of Counselor Education and Supervision Conference in Portland Nov. 15-18. The conference was organized and led by the department’s Keith Dempsey (WACES president) and Michelle Eave (WACES vice president). Eave presented “The Experience of Novice Counselors Working with Clients Who Are Adult Survivors of Childhood Sexual Abuse”; Daniel Sweeney presented “The Practical Use Of Sandtray Therapy Across Therapeutic Settings”; and Lorraine DeKruyf presented “Grounded Theory Insights into School Counseling Site Supervisor Development,” “Centering the Pendulum: Training School Counselors to Claim a Balanced Identity” and “A Statewide University Collaboration Model: School Counselor Educators Partner for Comprehensive Success.” Also participating was Amber Russell (a GDC alumna, PsyD student and WACES graduate student representative), who presented “The Multiracial Individual as a Unique Population within Diversity: What Educators, Supervisors, and Clinicians Ought to Know.”

Gary Tandy (English) led this fall’s “Seminar by the Sea” at Twin Rocks Friends Camp, speaking on “The Life and Imagination of C. S. Lewis.”

Ed Higgins (English) published three poems in the November issue of the online magazine Silent Things.

Sign-ups for this fair came earlier this year. The annual Sports and Entertainment Fair sponsored by the Portland Trail Blazers will be held at the Rose Garden on Tuesday, Feb. 19, just before the game with the Phoenix Suns. The event includes a panel of industry leaders at 3:30 p.m., with the fair from 4 to 6 p.m., followed by attendance at the game.

Last year’s fair netted 20 hires, so the hiring game is on! Some of the organizations represented will be the Portland Trail Blazers, Portland Timbers, the NBA, Adidas, Tacoma Rainiers, Sacramento Kings, Alpha Broadcasting, Salem-Keizer Volcanoes and Sports Management Worldwide. Marketing, communication, management and media majors are targeted.

Career Services is coordinating the group registration and providing transportation to this fair. Payment is required to secure your registration and ticket. Complete your registration via BruinCareers at this link by Friday, Dec. 14. If paying by cash or check, please remit payment to Career Services on the first floor of the Stevens Center. You may also pay by credit card online.

We have 20 spots reserved on a first-come, first-served basis. The fee will be $10, discounted by the Career Services Office. This is a great opportunity to network and pursue your career in sports.

All the proceeds of this raffle will be used to supply a local family in need with food and gifts for Christmas. This family consists of a recently married couple that both work full-time jobs, as well as look after their 2-year-old godson.

Starting Jan. 2, students who are eligible to do so may change their meal plans in their MyGFU account.

Student Life strongly urges EVERYONE to confirm their meal plan to be certain that you have the meal plan that you are expecting.

You can change your meal plan and confirm which meal plan you have in your MyGFU account – STUDENT RESOURCES – UNIVERSITY FORMS after Jan. 2, 2013.

The 21, 14, 10, 10 +Flex, 7 and No Meal Plan all roll over from the fall to the spring semesters so you do not need to select a new plan if you are planning to be stay on the meal plan you had in the fall.

The 35 Block and the All Flex Plan do NOT roll over. These convert to the No Meal Plan. If you want to renew the All Flex or 35 Block Plan you must add these meal plans to your account in MyGFU.

Please Note: All changes must be processed no later than Friday, Jan. 25, 2013. However, students can always add a meal plan through out the semester by contacting Jere Witherspoon in the Student Life office.

Accommodations to the meal plan are provided only through documented medical conditions.

The best part of a meal plan has nothing to do with the quality or nutrition of the food. The attractive part of eating on a meal plan is the opportunity to frequently connect with peers and classmates. Sharing a meal, conversation around the table, debriefing the day or anticipating what might unfold is really the gem of being on a meal plan. Historically and culturally communities have been built around food. I am not sure why it works, but sharing a meal is one of most significant ways to build a relationship, hence it strengthens our community. That in itself is a major benefit for being on the meal plan.
