With inclement weather expected this weekend, the George Fox men’s tennis team has announced plans for their three scheduled home tennis matches Feb. 22-24 in case of rain.
Friday’s match with the Pacific Lutheran University Lutes (2-0, NWC 2-0) is scheduled for 3 p.m., but if it rains, the match will be moved to the Tualatin Hills Tennis Center in Beaverton and will start at 6 p.m.
On Saturday, the Bruins take on the Whitman College Missionaries (1-1, NWC 1-0), who are ranked No. 13 nationally and No. 6 in the West Region. That match will definitely be moved from the campus to the main indoor facility at Tualatin Hills in Beaverton. The start time will remain the same at 6 p.m.
Sunday’s contest with the Linfield College Wildcats (0-2, NWC 0-2) is set for 2 p.m. on campus, but if the weather is uncooperative, the match will be moved ahead two hours to noon at Tualatin Hills.
The George Fox Symphonic Band will perform Johan de Meij’s Lord of the Rings Symphony at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 28, in Bauman Auditorium. All are invited, and admission is free.
All are invited to attend Spanish Chapel at 10:40 a.m. Friday, February 22Â in the Bruin Grounds. The sermon will be shared by Angel Diaz, the pastor at the Spanish Friends Church in Newberg.

We will be carefully & skillfully removing some cabinets from a home to be re-sold in Habitat’s Restore to gain profit to build houses for people in great need in the community.

We are in the process of planning and pulling together the teams for our annual Spring Serve trips (March 23-30). We have several organizations with whom we have annually partnered in service and are looking for current employee or alumni “advisors” to participate with our Serve Trip student-leaders. These individuals serve as university representatives, support the student leaders on their respective trips, and help keep these experiential ministry opportunities purposeful, successful, educational, and helpful to our hosts.
Our goal is for each trip to have two student leaders who are responsible for all trip coordination and team meetings. The job of the trip advisor would be to come alongside them and to offer support, wisdom, advice (especially in terms of risk-management), and general life-experience and spiritual guidance as the students lead the team.

Join us for the fifth installment of the spring Liberal Arts and Critical Issues series this Monday, Feb. 25, in Hoover 105. The theme of this spring’s lecture series is “State of the Union.”
Monday’s session runs from 7 to 8 p.m. and features Dr. Fred Van Dyke, executive director of the Au Sable Institute for Environmental Studies. He will present a lecture titled “Hope and Hopelessness: Overcoming the State of Despair in Modern Conservation,” in which he will argue that, concerning conservation efforts, hope is “not a product of emotional exhortation but a reasoned and confident expectation of an altered future condition relative to present circumstances.”
The same session is presented from 4:40 to 5:40 p.m.; however, it is recommended that the general public attend the evening session, if possible.

The university’s 2013 Dalton Lecture is tonight (Wednesday) in Bauman Auditorium at 7:30 p.m. Students who attend will receive chapel credit. The lecture, titled “The Big Bang, Stephen Hawking and God,†will be presented by Dr. Henry F. Schaefer III, director of the Center for Computational Quantum Chemistry at the University of Georgia.

The university community is invited to the annual Bösendorfer Artist Concert Series, featuring Italian pianist Gianluca Luisi, tomorrow (Thursday), in Bauman Auditorium. This marks a return to the university for Luisi, who will perform a series of J.S. Bach and Franz Liszt pieces – as well as a duet piece, Three Preludes by George Gershwin, with professor Kenn Willson – on the university’s Bösendorfer “Imperial†grand piano.
Luisi, who has performed at New York’s Carnegie Hall and at renowned venues around the world, will perform a 7:30 p.m. concert. All George Fox employees and students are entitled to one free ticket they may pick up at the box office in the Pennington House (Portland Center students and employees may call 503-554-3844 to reserve your ticket). Additional tickets are $12 for adults, $8 for seniors and alumni, and $6 for students/children. Tickets are available for purchase online at this link.
Luisi also will hold a master class at 4 p.m. today (Wednesday), in Bauman Auditorium, where he will coach piano performance majors. The public is welcome to attend the class at no charge.

Urban Outreach, the campus homeless ministry, will be holding a coin drive so we can make simple hygiene packs for our friends on the streets. We’ll also take unneeded winter clothes. Look for us at chapel on Wednesday (Feb. 20) and at your doors on Wednesday and Thursday nights.

The university will host the Portland Youth Philharmonic, led by Conductor and Music Director David Hattner, for a Monday, Feb. 25, concert in Bauman Auditorium. The 7:30 p.m. performance is free and open to the public, and no tickets are required.
The evening will feature Rachel Graves, winner of PYP’s 2012-13 Concerto Competition, performing Mendelssohn’s Violin Concerto in E minor, Op. 64. The program also includes William Bergsma’s Chameleon Variations and Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 6 in B Minor, ‘Pathétique.’
The concert is a free preview of PYP’s winter concert to be held in the Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall on Saturday, March 2, at 7:30 p.m.
