A Vancouver, Wash., couple who for decades have ministered to victims of child sex trafficking both domestically and internationally will be the featured speakers Tuesday, April 23, at the monthly Newberg meeting of the Christian Chamber of Commerce of the Northwest.

The meeting is from 7:30 to 9 a.m. in the Villa Academic Complex. There is a $5 suggested donation for guests.

Cyndi Romine is known as one of the leading international experts on the tragedy of child sex trafficking. She has labored for this cause for the past 23 years, working in tandem with her husband Greg, a pastor, evangelist and missionary.

Founders of Romine Ministries and King’s Church in Vancouver, Greg and Cyndi served as full-time missionaries in the Philippines and Hong Kong and are now doing international evangelism. As an evangelist, Greg has spoken on six continents, in 60 nations, over the last 35 years.

The last Spanish Chapel of the semester will be at 10:40 a.m. Friday, April 19, in the Bruin Grounds. Instead of the typical service, we will  have a worship service and an open microphone where students can share a short message. Chapel credit will be provided.

The Center for Peace and Justice, the Creation Care Committee and the Center for Global Studies invite the campus community to a showing of the film The Island President today (Wednesday) at 4 p.m. in Lemmons 8.

The Island President links the struggle for democracy and human rights with the fight to stabilize the climate. Join us as we participate with more than 100 colleges across the country for a nationwide screening of this powerful film and a discussion with the film’s director following.

This is the final week our theatre department is presenting the spring romantic comedy Enchanted April. The show runs Thursday through Sunday, April 18-21, in Wood-Mar Auditorium. All performances begin at 7:30 p.m. with the exception of Sunday’s 2 p.m. matinee.

It’s interview season for summer and fall! The instructions and offer letters for summer are up to date on the supervisor Web page. Please remember that summer jobs must go to students who will be a student this fall, and preferably returning students (although you can hire a freshman if that’s your only / best qualified candidate). Please ask students to submit a summer application form, and that will need to be turned into HR along with the offer letter and any other documents that are required (see instructions). If the student is planning to live on campus, they must apply for housing by April 26.

If you wish to hire a student who is graduating, please contact Human Resources, as they will be considered a Temporary Employee (no longer classified as a student if graduated).

We don’t yet have fall work-study eligibility reports posted on the Web, so ask your student if they’ve been offered work-study and take their word for it. You can leave the amount blank on the fall offer letter. We’ll advise when the report switches to the 2013-14 academic year.

Have you heard about the new online time-keeping system? It’s awesome, developed by our own Mike Campadore in IT, with documentation and training by Piper Parks. All supervisors will be offered training (if you’re here in the summer, that’s when your invitation will come). I understand if you’re anxious to switch — it’s cool.

Looking forward to the end of the school year:

• If you’re NOT on the online time-keeping system, feel free to have any students who work through May 5 turn in May hours on the April time sheet, and please try to hand-deliver those time sheets as early in the day on Monday, May 6 as possible.
• Remember to catch students and their time sheets on their last day to work for the school year, BEFORE they leave for summer! If a student does leave without signing the time sheet, we can still process it with your signature, so don’t hold it.
• Encourage all students who will be on Juniors Abroad or May Serve to sign up for direct deposit so their money will be immediately available on May 15. The form is on the student employment Web page.
• Summer employment (and therefore summer time sheet) starts on Monday, May 6. Since your employees will probably be working an eight-hour day, remember that lunch periods are not paid time, so they must clock out for their lunch period and clock in when they return. Their lunch should be taken before they hit the six-hour mark. They must take at least a 30-minute unpaid meal break.
• We are planning our summer student employment meeting for Monday, May 6, at 9 a.m. (location to be announced). Thank you for sending your students, and feel free to attend yourself.

Be sure to get your tickets to the Friday screening at the Cameo Theater in Newberg this week. Tickets are $4 for one or $6 for two and can be purchased at the university’s box office, from one of the Film Festival Committee members (Carissa Gobble, Molly Norton, Sandra Conlon), or at the door on Friday at the Cameo. Doors open at 4 p.m. on Friday.

Saturday is our free award ceremony hosted by alumnus Tyler Robertson and current student Onjalai Flake! The red-carpet show hosted by Robby Larson and Valerie Rogers is from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. while the student filmmakers and local judges arrive to the event and take red-carpet photos.

The award ceremony follows from 6:30 to 9 p.m., where 17 awards will be presented and a few more films premiered.

All are invited to join as we celebrate the 15th anniversary of the the Fox Film Festival, an entirely student-run and promoted event.

The Business and Economics Department invites the campus community to hear from Ekaterina Walker, author of the Wall Street Journal bestseller Think Like Zuck: The Five Business Secrets of Facebook’s Improbably Brilliant CEO Mark Zuckerberg, from 9:05 to 10:20 a.m. Thursday, April 18, in Lemmons 8.

Walter will discuss the marketing strategy of Mark Zuckerberg and Facebook and the “Five Business Secrets.” She is a social media strategist and innovator at Intel and a sought-after speaker and regular contributor to leading-edge publications such as Fast Company and Huffington Post.

In 2012, Walter was named among “25 Women Who Rock Social Media.” She sits on the board of directors of the Word of Mouth Marketing Association (WOMMA) and is an active member of the Thunderbird Global Council at Thunderbird School of Global Management. Chris Pulver began work last week as a specialist II in student financial services. He has worked as a teller at the Key Bank in Wilsonville the past two years and, before that, was an assistant manager at the Blockbuster video store in Canby. In 2009, he completed a bachelor’s degree in business administration from the University of Oregon, where he also worked as a student assistant in the school’s Knight Library from 2007-09. Chris lives in Molalla and attends New Life Foursquare Church in Canby.

Jeremy Brown, who has assisted Steve Delamarter (Seminary) with his manuscript imaging project the past couple of years, has been hired on part time in a specialist IV capacity.

Sean McKay (IT) left George Fox this month to work at Portland State University.

Several members of the university’s undergraduate and graduate psychology programs, and graduate counseling program, participated in the Christian Association for Psychological Studies (CAPS) international conference held in Portland April 4-6. A number of professors presented in workshops and breakout sessions, including Winston Seegobin, Nancy Thurston, Richard Shaw, Mark McMinn, Mary Peterson, Rodger Bufford, Daniel Sweeney, Kris Kays, Joel Gregor, Carlos Taloyo, Kelly Chang and Bill Buhrow. Several faculty members and graduate and undergraduate students also presented posters.

Seth Sikkema (School of Business) has been selected as a 2013 Portland Police Bureau Award recipient for his work with the Justice for Fraud Victims Program. He received an Achievement Medal award on Tuesday, April 13, in a ceremony at the David Douglas Horner Performing Arts Center. Seth was instrumental in establishing the Justice for Fraud Victims Program on the George Fox campus, where accounting students review Portland Police case files on fraud to help them in their prosecution efforts.

Paul Otto (History) has been awarded a one-month Anthony N. B. and Beatrice W. B. Garvan Fellowship in American Material Culture at the Library Company of Philadelphia. He will be conducting research for an article with the working title, “Trading in Wampum: Manufacturers and Merchants in the Eighteenth Century.”

Two of Ed Higgins’ (English) haiku poems, “tonight’s moon” and “ghosts enter,” are in the Spring/Summer 2013 issue of the haiku journal Dark Pens. Ed also had his poem “Alternate Tale” republished in the April 2013 issue of Contemporary Haibun Online.

With Linda Samek taking the provost position for the 2013-14 academic year, Scot Headley will serve as interim dean of the School of Education for 2013-14. Scot currently chairs the Educational Foundations and Leadership Department, primarily teaching in the Doctor of Education program. Gary Tiffin, director of the Doctor of Education program, will be chairing the EDFL department for the coming year.

During the fall of 2012, George Fox students were surveyed to measure their financial literacy. Results from our analysis suggest that while a number of factors determine financial literacy, the strongest predictor is the respondent’s race. We believe that George Fox could greatly improve students’ ability to manage their finances through targeted educational programs.

On Wednesday, April 17, we invite you to join us as we discuss our findings from 10:30 to 11:40 a.m. in Hoover 105. Taking part in the presentation will be Nate Peach from our School of Business and Drew Van der Werff, a senior finance student.

The presentation, titled “Enrolled to Succeed or Ignored to Fail?,” will be based on the article “Determinants of the Financial Literacy of Undergraduate Students: A Survey-Based Analysis” by Peach, Ryan Halley and Van der Werff.
