We will be hosting Peace’d Together – An Intercultural Conference on the Newberg campus in April! The purpose of the event is to initiate dialogue that will assist us as we bridge gaps that culturally separate us, find truth where each of our roads cross, and celebrate the contribution each of us bring to the diversity of God’s kingdom and the George Fox community.

This is a free conference and promises to be amazing! It will be held in various buildings on campus Friday, April 12, from 7 to 9 p.m. and Saturday, April 13, from 9 a.m to 6 p.m. The key speakers will be Pastor Tory Campbell, Dr. Caleb Rosado, Dr. Keith Dempsey partnering with graduate student Amber Nelson, Dr. Joel Perez, Dr. Melanie Hulbert and the Student Congress on Racial Reconciliation (SCORR) team.

Even though this is a free event be sure to register for the conference using your GFU e-mail address! You need to be registered in order to attend the conference.

James Project is partnering with Love INC from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, March 16. We need students who have a heart for serving their community to accomplish the following kinds of tasks this weekend:

• Spreading bark mulch
• House cleaning
• Household maintenance: hang a light fixture, assemble beds
• Yard work; plant bulbs, trim, weed, remove dead plants

Please note that the deadline to pay your housing deposit has been extended to Thursday, March 21. So if you have been unable to pay your deposit so far, there is still time to do so.

Students who pay their deposit before March 21 will still be eligible to participate in housing selection. Paying a deposit between March 18 and 21 will not adversely affect placements in housing as these are based on the group’s average credits. Placements are not evaluated on the basis of who signs up first.

The Housing Selection Form will be available online by noon on Monday, March 18. Only students who have paid a housing deposit will be able to sign up for housing through the online form.

George Fox is hosting the Northwest Independent College Business Officer’s Association Conference Thursday afternoon and Friday morning (March 14-15). Due to the hosting of this event, the Office of Financial Affairs will be staffed only by work-study students during the conference. You may still drop off check requests, deposits, etc., but we ask that you be patient during this time.

The university’s spring Liberal Arts and Critical Issues series continues this Monday, March 18, with a lecture by Kathryn Hickok, publications director for the Cascade Policy Institute. The presentation is the latest on the theme “State of the Union.”

Monday’s session runs from 7 to 8 p.m. in Hoover 105. Hickok will discuss how, as citizens, we must explain the “why’s” behind our views to be persuasive in today’s political and public policy debates.

The same session is presented from 4:40 to 5:40 p.m.; however, it is recommended that the general public attend the evening session, if possible.

The Swaziland and Nicaragua Summer Serve teams will be selling fresh Filipino egg rolls and quesadillas during Tent City tonight (Thursday)! All proceeds will support our upcoming serve trips. We will be set up outside of the Stevens Center, so be sure to head on over for some warm, delicious food as you wait out the night with your tent buddies or after Mr. Bruin.

All students and faculty are welcome to have a tasty treat and help support Nicaragua and Swaziland team members. Costs will be $1-$3 depending on your order, so make sure you have cash on hand!

Are you interested in exploring storytelling as a form of worship?

If so, you may want to audition for the 2013-2014 University Players, a theatre ministry ensemble that travels to churches, schools, and other gatherings.

Auditions are from 4 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. Monday, March 18 in Bauman Greenroom. Read about the audition requirements and sign up for an audition time on the theatre bulletin board in Lemmons. You do not need to be a theatre major to audition.

Join the 27-hour Stand for Freedom for the 27 million slaves in the world. The International Justice Mission club has organized a Stand for Freedom in the quad starting at 11 a.m. today (Wednesday) and going to 2 p.m. Thursday.

Robin Baker has agreed to help support the Nicaragua summer serve team in its fundraising efforts by agreeing to do something drastic for April Fool’s Day. You get to decide what he does!

Watch for representatives from the Nicaragua team in the lobby before and after chapel until spring break, as well as in the Bruin Den during dinner. There will be three jars – one accepting donations for the dyeing of the mustache, one for the dyeing of the hair, and one for a pie in the face. Whichever jar has the most money in it by April 1, when President Baker speaks in chapel, will win.

My business senior capstone group is putting on a glow-in-the-dark 5K (that benefits Love INC) this Saturday, March 16, and we are in dire need of volunteers to help at all times throughout the day. We anticipate having 300 participants, so I would appreciate any help our group could get. I hope you will join us for this community-building event!

Here is a list of volunteer positions:

Course Guides (up to 30 volunteers): Guides show up at Wheeler Sports Center at 5 p.m. Saturday. They will be in charge of guiding the runners at key junctures of the course, handing out water, and cheering the participants on. Course guides are asked to wear white shirts and will be given glow gear to wear and snacks. They will be assigned their posts at 5 p.m. and will help put together any finishing touches on the course. After all the runners have finished, they are free to join the post-race bash in EHS, where there will be food and music.

Set-up (up to 10 volunteers): Volunteers will meet at EHS at 9 a.m. Saturday. They will assist in putting together decorations for the post-race bash, making signs for the course guides, and setting up for registration. Volunteers will be needed until at least noon, and breakfast will be supplied.

Post-Race Bash and Take Down (up to 10 volunteers): Volunteers will meet at EHS at 6 p.m. and will help do any last-minute set-up for the bash, help vendors set up their stations, guide runners from the track to EHS, and facilitate the bash. Volunteers are asked to wear white shirts and will be given glow gear and snacks. Take-down of the bash will take place at approximately 10 p.m.

Registration (up to 5 volunteers): Volunteers will meet in Wheeler at 5 p.m. They will hand out race packets, register new runners, and assist in the pre-race activities. Volunteers are asked to wear white and will be given glow gear and snacks. They will also need to assist in final calculations once the race has begun, and are free to join the bash afterwards.

An art exhibit featuring pieces by George Fox students will open Thursday, March 14, in the Lindgren and Minthorne galleries.

The exhibit will begin with an opening reception from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday. It will remain on display in both galleries through Wednesday, April 10.

March is Women’s History Month, a time to remember the obstacles women have overcome and to confront the barriers women still face.

Come by the student life office in the Stevens Center this month and collect a card to write a “thank you” to influential women in your life. Grab a chocolate while you’re here to give to a woman as well, as they do this time of year in Eastern Europe.
