If you love to sing, Concert Choir may be the place for you! The Concert Choir is an auditioned ensemble made up of both music majors and non-music majors. The choir is committed to excellent choral singing in a wide variety of styles, including contemporary, sacred, gospel arrangements, spirituals, and hymn settings.

Audition sign ups are posted outside of Ross 201 where you can also pick up an audition packet.

Mail Services will extend its hours for package pick-up in the coming days. Here is a summary:

Normal hours: Thursday and Friday, 8 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.

Extra hours: Open this Saturday, Aug. 31, 9 a.m. – 2 p.m.

Monday and Tuesday, Sept. 2 and Sept. 3, open 7:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.

If you are just arriving on Saturday, stop and get all your packages that day to avoid the long lines on Monday and Tuesday.

Serve Day is coming on Wednesday, Sept. 11! If you are planning to purchase a meal, please complete this form so we know how much food to prepare. If you do not plan to purchase a meal, you do not need to complete this form.

Breakfast and dinner are provided for all employees; all meals are provided for team leaders and committee members. Dinner is available for purchase for families of employees; bring a blanket and enjoy a picnic on the quad after a wonderful day of service.

This .75 FTE position (30 hours per week year round) will be open to internal applicants (employees) only for one week. Temporary employees may also apply, but external applications are not being accepted.

Welcome Weekend is this week! With all the new students and their families we’re expecting 2,000 guests on campus Thursday, Aug. 29, and Friday, Aug. 30. Here are a few important details for employees.

Welcoming our Guests: While this may seem obvious, please greet and welcome our guests, ask if they need help, walk them to the Information Tent on the quad if they have a question you can’t answer, and help us make this a special time for our new students and their families.

Schedule: The complete schedule for Welcome Weekend can be found at welcome.georgefox.edu. There are three schedules: traditional students, transfer students, and families and guests.

Parking: On Thursday and Friday, we need employees to park in one of three locations off-campus:

• Gravel parking lot on Meridian Street (just past Fulton Street next to the railroad tracks) and walk to campus
• Newberg Friends Church (307 S. College St.) and ride shuttle to campus. Pick-up will begin at 7:30 a.m. at the corner of South College Street & East 4th Street and will run every 15 minutes from 7:30 to 9:30 a.m. and 3:30 to 5:30 p.m.
• Northside Community Church (1800 Hoskins St.) and ride shuttle to campus. Pick-up will begin at 7:30 a.m. near the parking lot entrance on East Crestview Drive (just to the east of Hoskins Street) and will run every 15 minutes from 7:30 to 9:30 a.m. and 3:30 to 5:30 p.m.
• Shuttles will arrive and depart from the sidewalk between Stevens and Hoover. The afternoon shuttles will begin departing from this location at 3:30 p.m.

Meals: Employees who signed up to be volunteers will receive one complimentary meal ticket to be used at lunch or dinner. Other employees desiring to eat on-campus can pay as they enter the meal lines.

Attire: If you have a George Fox polo or dress shirt, please wear it on Thursday and Friday.

Supporting Documentation includes but is not limited to:

  • Description of goods and/or services (including quantity and unit price)
  • Total amount of purchase/service
  • Date of purchase/service

• Substantiation of business purpose may include an agenda, meeting announcement, brochure, or other similar types of documentation.

The Office of Spiritual Life has a part-time position they would like to fill “yesterday.” This position is slated for 10 hours per week and will run through next May. Work schedule will preferably be all day Fridays with an additional two or three hours one other day. The duties of the position including serving as project manager for the Regeneration Conference in October and providing support for other programs in the spiritual life, inclusion and leadership offices.

Several of our new international students are looking for off-campus housing. They are not able to live on campus since they are 23 or older or are graduate students. As you know, rental housing in Newberg is really tight this year.

A beginning piano class is being offered this Fall and still has openings. Sign up for this fun, 1 credit course.

Students will learn the basics of playing the piano and reading music in a group setting. No previous experience is necessary. This is also the right place for students who have had 1-2 years of experience and/or are wishing to review basic musical concepts as they apply to the piano. (MUSI 135-A; Fridays, 1:40-2:30 p.m.)

If you used the FoxTALE grade book for any of your FoxTALE course sites, we recommend that you back up your Summer 2013 grade book to a spreadsheet that is saved outside of FoxTALE. See the instructions here for backing up grades. You will want to keep an archive of your course grades that cover the last five years.

Upgrade planned
A FoxTALE upgrade is planned for 8 a.m. Sunday, Aug. 25, to 8 a.m. Monday, Aug. 26. FoxTALE will not be available during this time. We apologize for the inconvenience.

Prepare for Fall 2013 and Spring 2014

• Use your new, empty Fall 2013 and Spring 2013 sites as the sites in which you will teach. You may import content from another course site. See the instructions here for importing.
• If your course site is set to Weekly format, your course might show incorrect dates. To change the dates, go to Settings > Course administration > Edit settings on the course home page. Scroll down to the Course start date and change it to the first day of your summer course. Scroll to the bottom of the page and “Save changes.”
• Your Fall 2013 and Spring 2014 sites are unavailable (hidden) to students. When you are ready to make a site available, go to Settings > Course administration > Edit settings on the course home page. Scroll down to the “Availability” section and select “This course is available to students” from the drop-down menu. Scroll to the bottom of the page and “Save changes.”
• If you have course content to move from old FoxTALE to new FoxTALE, please contact the Service Desk. Please note that old FoxTALE will no longer be available after Aug. 31, 2013.
• You can create assignments before the upgrade. Assignments in courses that go through the upgrade will be automatically converted to the new format. No further action is required.

A beginning guitar class and individual guitar lessons are being offered this fall on campus. Sign up and add some fun to your schedule!

The Beginning Guitar Class is offered for those new to the guitar who want to learn in a fun group setting. Learn to play awesome rock and roll classics and your favorite worship songs. No experience is necessary. MUSI 250-A (Tuesdays/Thursdays, 9:40-10:30 a.m).

Private Guitar Lessons are offered to bring your playing to the next level! One-on-one lessons cover beginners all the way to very experienced players. Sign up and get some new skills and techniques. Work on music that you really want to play. MUSA 105/305 GT

Lessons are taught by in-demand Portland guitarist Dave Iula. He performs with Portland’s top bands (Mel Brown, Patrick Lamb, Excellent Gentlemen) as well as many churches in Portland (Beaverton Foursquare, Southlake Church, Rolling Hills, Imago Dei Community).
